Kurt Steiner set the world record for skipping stones by hurling a rock at the water and making it skip an astonishing 88 times. How is that even possible? WIRED's Robbie Gonzalez got coaching from Steiner to find out how he does it -- and looked into fluid dynamics and physics to see whether we've reached the limit for skipping stones.

Robbie is phenomenal host for this show. He's above average for a relative novice at the majority of the things he tries, yet he seems to have no ego about it. The amazement that he, fairly naturally gifted person, has for the experts at a craft is what makes the show. I love his humility and I aspire to develop it.

I remember once testing to see how much the spin affects things by taking a decent rock and rolling it up in my belt about half the length so more energy could be imparted into the spin. It didn’t go very far, but it practically hovered on the water until it wasn’t going fast enough to overcome the wave it was making. This makes me wonder if there’s an optimal ratio of speed to spin. If I had to guess, it would probably depend on the size and density of the stone.

I have a major problem with this: The physicist said that he used a 93 mph pitch as his parameter for the projection, considering that the stone is a little bit heavier than a baseball. However, the angle is completely different. Submarine pitchers (basically underhand) only throw around 80-85 mph because of the mechanics necessary to do that, so I think that the number would probably be lower than 93.

Here, it's just basically spinning the rock like a tire in a horizontal form. The surface isn't very stable hence requires to be rolled to jump, you can also not to but it would be quite hard. It needs a certain angle, for each type of weight and rocks and of course, the direction. The shapes doesn't matter since you can try to adjust yourself to it. The best angle is to face it upwards towards the direction.
