Oh no, I see what you mean. How about without a religion then

Well... I guess you could... but if you play as Byzantium and do not found a religion, then you miss out their bonuses. That can be a whole challenge but, for me, I focus on fun more than winning, and the fun is in using the totality of a Civ and what makes them unique. Each Civ has unique abilities and units for a reason and playing with those subtle differences is what makes the game fun.
