Here’s my beginner question: what quick (for every additional minute required, the likelihood of me doing it is significantly reduced lol) warmups are best before a round of disc golf? I don’t do any warmups currently, although yesterday I did swing my arms around in a windmill for like 30 seconds because I saw someone on KZbin do it before a round.

@@ToddsDiscGolf Honestly, to give a quick answer for your quick question, I just grip the disc sideways with my power grip and take backhand swings Righty and Lefty, starting out slowly and working up to 80-90% power. With the exercises I do a warm up is not needed because my muscles are already prepared for the movements but I like doing these just to get some blood flow. Does that answer your question?

I've been meditating on this a lot recently. Disc golf is so young of a sport (in terms of participants) that we haven't broken ground on strength and conditioning to enhance power yet. But starting young and growing up playing the sport is a valid reason for the struggles of someone who started as an adult. I noticed it when I struggle to brace and wonder why I just can't do it. While it's not impossible to develop a good brace as an adult, I can see why it's easier for a 12 year old to do so. I'm in my 30s, a gym rat for 20 years, and I have a lot more mass and spent most of my life NOT doing rotational movements. Every top pro has started when they were young when it was easier for them to learn and coordinate their bodies. Let's say someone starts when they're 110 lbs, theyre bracing against that 110lb mass and build up to say 170 as an adult whereas I'm bracing 200+lb mass against a weak brace while trying to coordinate speed into form. It's a struggle. Thats why i really appreciate your series with Drew. I've slowed my walk up tremendously so I'm not using more forward momentum than I can brace against

I say specific workout moves in Baseball/Softball and incorporating into a sport can help players stay fit as sports use a bunch of similar motions. Also, trail running with a hydration pack/vest can help with stamina in disc golf and online some cheaper packs can be found. I do however recommend to just buy better bladders and bottles not made by Chinese brands/countries or brands not using safety laws of at least the USA where BPH is illegal for plastic.

From someone with a degree in exercise science (biomechanics, strength training, general health and fitness, etc.), this is a banger video. The impact this could make on helping those who've gotten into the sport later in life is exponential. Form coaches are great, but if someone can't get into the positions he needs to, he isn't going to see much of a difference.

I’m currently 28 and have been playing for about 3 years now and anytime I look back on where my form was at and how my body felt I can tell the difference in athleticism levels at these stages. I can’t say I’ve been the most consistent but I do realize after making even small commitments to improving general mobility it makes a huge difference and makes me realize how much higher levels of athleticism these pros have after playing for so many years. It’s something everyone should care to understand in depth if they wanna keep playing much longer or just gain more distance

This was such a well put together video! It really inspired me to think about the interplay between the form and skill in sports with physical mobility. One concept I've heard that I found valuable is thinking of sports being broken down into three components- Psychology, Physiology, and Specificity. The first being your mental game and ability to perform, the second what your physical body is capable of, and the last the sport specific skills such as your technique and form. I completely agree that Physiology tends to be the least explored of the three when it comes to disc golf and I love that you are delving into it.

This might be your most important video, Anthony. I 100% agree that people hammer on the idea that the disc golf throw is all about positions and form. When people say that everyone can throw like 400' I disagree, bc most people haven't unlocked the mobility at even that level to where their body wouldn't let them generate that much power. Everyone can throw 400' if they work on their mobility, strength, and form!

I disagree. Every person has a different level of athleticism and even with proper form it's not always going to equate to the same results.

I think discussions like this are extremely important for those that get into discgolf at an older age. Especially people like me who came from competing in other sports at a high level, and found disc golf after severe injury. Being injured can make you feel like the athleticism is gone, but in really you just need more focus.

Great job with this! As an amateur about to turn 50, this stuff is very important and I think about it a lot. I've been playing casually for a couple years but recently have been doing a lot of form work and that's come with the realization that I need to do strength and mobility work similar to what I do for running but tailored to disc golf. Fortunately, my flexibility is still quite good, but I definitely need to strengthen some joints. I also need to remember that I can't push things too hard like I used to or still want to!

This is some really good information. The back leg during a backhand in terms of what the hip is doing shouldn’t really be looked at as rotational or transverse plane movement so much as pure hip abduction to maybe slight external rotation force production in terms of muscle action. The back leg is basically pushing against the bracing front leg. If you wanted to train this motion you could work on side stepping with resistance, single leg bridges, monster walks, etc. this isn’t to say the hip isn’t rotating but in terms of what is producing the pushing force for power it’s your hip abductors/external rotators (aka the glutes). The front leg is closed chain (foot planted) hip internal rotation so that relies on three main things really. How much passive internal hip rotation you have, how much active hip internal rotation you have in close chain, and your hip motor control/coordination (are you able to control the range of motion). Your exercise with the band in the doorway is great and all but you’d actually be better off doing the same thing in standing with no resistance and rotating on your plant leg as far as you actively can. A good idea would be to find a good hip IR stretch to increase your passive range and then work into that range actively. Some other really great closed chain hip IR exercises are good mornings (seated or standing) or a step up where you start facing the step to the side and rotate as you step up. Hopefully that gives you some new ideas. Overall this is a really great video. Especially for someone who isn’t a personal trainer, PT, or AT -Physical therapist.

Hi Anthony. This is a great topic, something we need to talk about much more. I've never been an athlete or particularly athletic at anything, never worked out. I started playing disc golf earlier this year. I'm 41 years old. Starting disc golf as a 40 year old unathletic guy was pretty humbling - I was lucky to get 50m (164 feet) of distance. Obviously form is a good part of that, throwing nose up etc, but there's no denying my unathletic aging body makes it more difficult. Fast forward several months and all I've done is play more disc golf. I haven't worked on my form, done field work, worked out, whatever, just played more. I used to get sore, not so much now. My distance has improved to about 75m (just under 250 feet), but more imporantly is much more consistant. That feels good. I know I'm unlikely to ever be able to throw 400 feet (120m), but I'm okay with that. I'd be more than happy with a consistant 90-100m (300-330 feet). But looking after my body along the way is going to be really important - it'd be much easier if I was in better shape. I'd also hate to injure myself to the point I can't play! I'd be happy to see more related content. I'd suggest breaking it down into shorter videos (I don't know how that works for a Pro KZbinr!) - the internet has a short attention span and likes one thing at a time. I'm probably guilty there too. See you in the next one!

Boy do I feel this on a religious level. I used to skateboard like 20 hours a week, with a recent background in college level tennis. (this is age of 26 years). I was throwing regularly 415+ on flat. After getting 'fat and happy', married, etc, my form is WAY better than it was at that point, but I stopped skateboarding and the tennis muscles faded away. So now 5 years later I've noticed my form is MUCH better (took the game a little more serious), and I'm only throwing 390 regularly. Granted, it's MUCH more accurate and i'm 75 points higher rated, that lack of explosiveness from skateboarding has gone away. Slowly working on dropping those 15lbs and getting the speed back. Great video!

I got into this last year at 37, now 38, and I hit 400 within a couple months and 500 in just over six with marginal technique. Disc golfers in general seem clueless as to how much strength and power play a role in athletic movements, so this is a great subject matter to bring up. I’m a general strength specialist and train athletes, and the biggest things to get people started are, like you said, moving through a full range of motion purposefully. Most injuries are from people pushing into their max effort zones too often, IME.

Children and developing you adults until approximately 25-30 years old still have all the amazing building block proteins and a surplus of stem cells in their body. Developing physical skills as a child with those softer tendons allows for specific muscle development and quick repair/healing. Basically, your body develops how you train it to and older people have a significantly harder time retraining and repairing their bodies since they no longer have tendons that are as flexible, have used up all those proteins, and have less spare stem cells. They must now rely entirely on the body’s much slower healing system to develop. This is why many older athletes have a tendency to juice.

I did start Disk golf after the age of 50 year… keeping injury out of question is hard to do. But you have to. My range now is about 120m so there is long way to 170m and longer… So yeah, it is hard to get those distances at this late. But i have still potential to get more distance just to improve my timing. Maybe 150m but ower that… not any more… But i did do a lot of athletics when I was young, so i have some backround even if not in disk golf. But you can get desent distance also at later age if you naturally have fast muscle cells. But your selling definitely is power than younger person who are more flexible and can use that sling effect more efective than we older persons.

instead of a weight for forearm curls you can get a stick, rope and a 250ml water bottle tie the rope to the middle of the stick and the other end to the bottle. Now you can twist the stick with your wrist up and back down the other way. I find it less repetitive then straight sets for the forearm curl and you get both arms at once.

I can't throw 500 ft yet, and actually I'm not sure I will ever throw that far, but I started about 18 months ago. I still got time ... I'm technically up to 465 as a personal best air shot, but golf distance is more like 375-420 depending on shot shape. I'm probably throwing up to the 64-66 mph range. And remember you probably need to gain distance slower than you think. Once you're at a high level, you probably need to let your body have time to adapt to the throw. Let the connective tissues strengthen and get used to the new range of motion, further ingrain the neural patterns of the throw, probably need to wait till your body is used to stretching that far under load before it naturally gets better at something. If you're 55 and have injuries yeah your limit might be 250-300 ft. But if you're healthy with enough time and practice I think most male adults could get to about 350-400 ft provided no injuries restrict them. 350 isn't a crazy bar, but for older people who haven't been active for a while it probably will take 2-5 years of consistent consciousness practice at least a few times a week. For women I'd assume that same sort of number is like 250-300ft but I have very very few data points for that. But frankly even with 250ft of pinpoint accuracy, you can score really well on most non pro courses if the rest of your game is dialed too. Can distance help? Certianly on longer courses. But if you're regularly being asked to throw shots below like 70% effort I find I'm very inconsistent sometimes it's 65% sometimes it's 45% when I'm aiming. My best golf ever is when I was back around 375' max but I was stuck at that distance for about 9-10 months so I had lots of time to get good at it. Recently my max has grown 90 ft in about 3 months or so and my game has gotten dramatically worse. You must throw your putters and mids very different than your drivers and especially your distance drivers. So when it's time for a mid or putter upshot that isn't a putting motion I have little clue if I'm going to mess it up and throw it 150 when I was aiming for 50ft of vice versa. When presented with a 190-280ft technical hole, I have to considered how to throw every disc in my bag since depending on the shot shape all of them could be the right call. And driving with a putter or mid is very sketchy cause you have to throw them different than a driver or you'll turf it.

distance is a terrible metric for how good you are at disc golf.

You talk about the angle of your arm in comparison to your elbow, but it seems that would extremely affect your nose angle and or hyzer/anyhyzer angle. I don't see how dropping your arm below your elbow equates to more distance. It seems that distance comes more from your feet and hips rather than arm placement.

Realizing now why everyone said my swimming background would help me. I’ve still got foot hip and shoulder mobility. Hoping I can finally use that and my rotational core strength to throw far. Someone invest in lessons for me please 😂

2:00 "starting when I'm older. I'm 25 now." 😑 Try 40s. 😢 Don't we all wish we started at 5? I guess it's all about realistic goals. I'm still hoping to get to 400' drives and be sorta competitive for MP50 when I'm that old.

I started a year and a half ago. I was stuck 170 feet... now I'm at 320 after 2 experts told me I won't make it past 250. And I'm still improving at 42 years od age. So I'm not vibing with you on this subject boss. Still like you a bunch. But we're not seeing eye to eye with you.

Where does being 320lbs and old fit into this 🤣 I was great at Disc Golf when I first started and was 200lbs in my 20s, then factory work made me quit playing because I was working 7 days a week.

Look at David Wiggins Jr. for a guy with massive internal hip rotation mobility. The guy is in his backhand hit and has folded over his brace hip without opening his plant foot an inch. Disgusting

Mobility aside (yoga women would be DG gods if this was the end solution), fast twitch muscle fibers are real... Someone who started DG in their mid-30's has a lower ceiling than someone who got their start in DG as a child/teenager. You can carry fast twitch fibers into later adulthood to minimize loss, but recruitment/development is not as high started in later adulthood.

Could translate from other sports, ive been active my whole life, sports in my younger years and powerlifting from 18 to 29, currently 29 and i threw 500+ after two summers of DG, never practised in the offseason

@@SiggeSolarix Definitely...if you have/had similar dynamics. A lacrosse player or baseball player is great transition. I was a collegiate and pro cyclist years ago (still kept active after), but obviously that does not necessarily translate over to having the overlap of core and arm speed.
