If you are able to access the damage like where the hair starts to thin out and see visible splits, you know where to cut. Cut where the damage ends.

So I have curly hair that has 3 distinct and different texture zones. My friend blew my hair out and trimmed my ends but I didn't know that she was opting to trim/cut in layers prior to styling. I was unaware until I rewashed my hair and it reverted to its natural state and I had a shelf like demarkation of hair lengths. My wash and go was really out of wack because of the difference in length as it dried. This is how I wear my hair almost all the time. I don't heat style or blow dry but maybe once in a blue moon if I need it for a style. It has been a challenge as it has grown out because I've had to trim it little by little to try and get it to have a more uniform shape. Now I have a lot of damaged ends due to neglecting the regular trim and I'm concerned about going to a stylist for a therapeutic trim because they can't see the damage due to the factors you described but I also know that my hair is very deceptive when blown out. What do you suggest considering it's still very much in layers. I feel I would lose so many inches just because of the prior layering. (The picture on my profile is almost 10 years old so my hair is no longer that color, length or that dry lol)

I basically had to get a silk press to truly see my splits. What I thought were simple splits was actually extensive damage almost to my roots. I ultimately made the decision to big chop. My stylist usually cuts my hair in its natural state or light blowout but had I not opted for a silk press, we probably wouldn’t have noticed just how damaged my hair was. It wasn’t her fault by the way-my hair took a huge hit once my health did. She initially tried to manage it with haircuts but I think we both knew it was too far gone to continue with cuts.

Hey this is off topic but I have that shirt! My visit to Ghana was transformative in so many ways. It also happened to be the year I big chopped and went natural shortly before my journey there. Initially I was focused on the poverty but then I realized that even if they had so little, they were happy. We in America are always in the pursuit of more that sometimes we forget to appreciate what we have. If you apply that to natural hair … sometimes we are so caught up in the pursuit of the perfect European ideal (long straight hair) that we fail to appreciate the versatility and majesty of the hair that grows naturally from our heads. I appreciate the knowledge you share. And the light hearted comedy and occasional shade is a plus 😊

Great info. Would it be the particular blowout stretch that makes for an ideal canvas for cutting or would hair stretched to a similar degree suffice? I guess Shann Bailee on youtube/insta would be an example of what i mean. Hair isn't too clumped up but not as stretched as a blowout. Maybe this detail doesn't matter but i was curious. Thanks for vid!
@AfrikanHairGod
@AfrikanHairGod 11 ай бұрын
Don't think about it like that. Everyone's hair is different and will respond to heat differently. Plus there are other factors to consider like how damaged the hair really is. You do what is necessary to get the proper cut to assess and remove the damage.

From experience with my hair that gets curly cut raggedy splits don’t behave the same as healthy ends. The end of the curls fray and don’t adhere to the other strands. I have fine tight waves that curl at the end maybe that effects it.

How do you deal with mid strand splits when they’re not all over the head?
@AfrikanHairGod
@AfrikanHairGod 11 ай бұрын
I leave it honestly. If the strand is maintaining itself then you might as well leave it. If it's throughout then it's usually other hair issues that's going on like widespread breakage and thinning
