I shot Nikon all through the 90s when I shot film (Kodak Lumiere, occasionally Fuji Velvia)... But when I finally switched to digital in around 2007, I went with Canon and got the 5D Mark II. I sold that and got the EOS R and now have the EOS R5. The RF glass is amazing - it's next level. No one has a zoom out like that 28-70mm f/2.0. But I agree with you the prices are insane and prohibitive. I'd have to spend north of 10k to get all the lenses I want, which I'm not doing during a pandemic.

It's funny how I switched from Canon to Nikon in 2007 because of their lies about their 9 point archaic AF in 5D mk2 while Nikon released a class leading 52 point AF system on D700 with class leading high ISO performance. Now Sony and Fuji!

@@fwfeo I used to focus manually and took pride in that aspect of my photography, but a few years after I got the 5DMKII I noticed my eyesight was starting to fail me on shots and I needed to rely more on AF. You're right that the Canon AF system in the 5DMKII was not great. That's the main reason that I upgraded - because I wanted the Canon dual pixel AF. Nikons are very good cameras. I wish I hadn't missed out on the Nikon D850. They also make great lenses.

I had two canon cameras for years, but then I just wanted to get something smaller and one that was more "intuitive" . So I switched over to a Fuji X100F and that brought back the joy in shooting photos and eventually getting me more interested in video. I still have all my cameras (Canon rig and Fuji rig), but I always end up using the Fuji because it was just less in your face and LIGHT. The colors from Fuji is amazing and I love the dials. So after being a Canon fanboy when I first got into cameras, I realized what I wanted in a camera, and now I'm still searching and wanting to try out something new. Want to sell my Canons and get a new Fuji (most likely the XT4), or try out a Sony for the first time (A7SIII). Like you said, find a camera that suits what you shoot.

Hey man I love this video. I love that you talk agnostically about platforms. I’m a lapsed photographer that wants something beyond my iPhone to shoot my growing family. Fuji’s XS-10 looked like the perfect camera for that and that’s how I found you. I also assumed you were just a Fuji guy, but then I came across these videos and hearing you explain your pro workflow and why you choose your gear has been eye opening to me and I really appreciate all of those videos. Maybe because I started on an Alpha DSLR I’m less engaged with the brand loyalty. But when I was learning film making everyone was using Canon 550d or if you had money the 5D. I’m a definite fanboy of brands like Apple but I think as I get older, I just accept there’s stuff I’m unwilling to change on like my phone choice, but I’m definitely more receptive to other brands than I was when I was younger. I listened to a great interview of the photographers behind the Pixel’s leap in computational photography and I appreciate that. I hope the channel keeps up the balance between your different interests because it’s an expression of who you are and that’s why I keep coming back. I listen to your recommendations and your advice. I also really dig that you brought up the diversity in the brand ambassador program because that stuff matters to me too. Even on KZbin you can get this skewed perspective on who is out there making great photography.

I haven't heard anybody else talk about this, but in fact, this is a big part of the reason I decided to buy a Sony camera instead of a Canon. I had been going back and forth trying to decide what was best for my filmmaking, and after all was said and done, I just felt like Sony was much more inclusive in their advertising, and I decided that both of these cameras are probably amazing just as cameras, and so I went with the humanity of it. Just finished the video and have to agree with everything you’ve said. I have slowly started letting go of canon after investing into Fuji gear this year. My first Fuji was the xt1 I bought influenced by Mattias Burling and KentuckyMan30, then that led into the purchase of an xt20 thanks to your recommendation and I loved that camera so much I just purchased an xt2. I have also started trading off my canon gear that has collected dust since then but I really have enjoyed the Fuji system to the point it doesn’t bother me nearly as much as I thought it would. I’ve sort of broken away from that brand loyalty mindset (partially from you shooting multiple systems!) because it just kind of clicked as a realization that canon isn’t doing what these other companies are doing for their user base. 10 years ago was a different story but since then I just feel as if they have been more and more out of the loop. I have wanted the Eos R since release but for the exact reasons you stated I have actually started looking towards the a7iii myself. You mentioned you feel as if you can finally get the colors you want from Sony in your editing process. Would you do a video like that showing your colorgrading process?? That has always been a minor reason it took me so long to look into Sony because everyone says the colors aren’t the same so I would love to see how you do it and I think that would make for a great video! :)

At the moment I'm a Sony APS-C user, but I'm going to change to R5. I mostly do wildlife still photography. I was worried about the money needed for the glass, because the Canon "L" - line lenses are extremely good but very expensive. I understand that for a pro it's not a problem to pay that $2-3k per lens but I'm not a pro. So I recearched this and there seems to be quite a lot of rumours stating that Sigma will release RF mount lenses early 2021. And there was an interview where Tamron sales rep (Marc Morris) told that they are working on them and they will be available soon. But there's a catch. Canon RF/EF adapter doesn't translate the data so all RF cameras accept EF lens connection data. So it has been speculated that at least the third party RF lenses currently available are electrically/programming wise EF lenses but with RF mechanical contact. So they work fine and are compact without the need for the adapter, but they lack some benefits RF interface brings. So I probably have to get the RF 100-500mm because 400-500mm is the focal length I use over 90% of the time. Well, it would be nice to have a reach of 600mm or more with f/5,6, but I cant handle heavy weights. I read that if the RF interface doesn't use encryption (or heavy encryption) it's not holding back the third party manufacturers for fastly making "real" RF lenses. But if there is some heavy encryption it will take some time to break. So it's looking good 😊.

@@ogonzilla I am all about value, I have a canon 6d and 5d and a few Sigma Art lenses. It was the best value for money in my mind at the time, and although it does give me great results it is just too impractical for every day carry for me. Enter Fuji! I do feel as if I require FF for automotive photography, so I may keep the 6d and one sigma lens, but as for the occasional wedding and just general shooting I do believe I will switch to Fuji completely. Now I'm broke so I won't even consider changing it😂 By the way, when it's time I think I'll stick with Fujifilm, just because it'll be cheaper to swap the body only (hopefully they won't change x-mount) I've always been fascinated by Sony full frames and medium format cameras though, but before I get there I need to get better as a photographer (just to not look as bad as the guy I once met with a 3K equipment shooting portraits in the mountains with built in flash on✌🏻)

I'm a Fuji lover. I'm not a pro photographer but sometimes i do profesional stuff. Sony is better than Fuji for being Full Frame (more DR), for a better AF system and for the battery life... About the color, it doesnt make sense to shoot JPEG and also I find Fuji JPEG colors overrated. Not overrated but I dont find them useful. I have to say that I'm more a designer than a Photgrapher and I edit and retouch a lot my images. But what made me g for Fuji instead of Sony is the prices and size. Full frame lenses are more heavy and expensive. That makes Fuji more enjoyable to use. And thats what I need. If I did commercial photography, I would still use Fuji, but the Medium Format... Sensor size is very important for profesional work.

Omar Gonzalez, please explain how you "fix" your Sony colours? I've owned compact and bridge cameras for about 13 years, and they are both mirrorless and given me very good results for family events of note. So eventually I realised there was, for what I do, no need to get a DSLR. It did not have any advantage, especially when the most interesting developments in DSLR cameras - dual pixel autofocus, is only available in live mode, which is essentially a mirrorless mode. Micro four thirds, - Nah. There is an african proverb that says, if you wanna eat a frog, eat a pregnant one with eggs. The compromises of the Micro four thirds sensor - and its effect on dynamic range and light gathering capability, cannot overcome physics. You want better images, get better sensor and lenses. And Micro 43rd are the least good sensors in the mirrorless world - fact. I therefore needed an upgrade to an APS-C mirrorless camera. to take my craft and passion and interest to the next level, cos I cannot afford to invest in a full frame, for a beginner. However the real issue is that when it comes to improving the quality of your photographs, you need something better than a kit lens, so which camera system makes it a lot easier to get to the next level to approximate the quality you see in professionally taken photographs using top end gear? I would call this the intermediate level. Lets look at Body, Sensors, and Lenses. Body - So ultimately, its not just about the camera body - which one can always adapt to and develop the needed workflow memory, over a few days of shooting. No camera is perfect in this regard. None.. Pick the one you like or the one you can afford. So in a way, there is not much of a difference in camera body function, especially when most of it is done in software or controlled via the screen, on the APS-C bodies from all manufacturers, with dedicated buttons/knobs only on the more expensive cameras. All mirrorless cameras are somewhat equal here. IMHO. Sensor - But however you also realise that value for money - Sony has better sensor tech than Canon. Canon makes you have to pay to get the good stuff. Sony is a consumer driven company so the good stuff trickles down more than Canon, to their entry level gear. So Sony wins here. Lenses - Starting with simple things like a nifty fifty, the challenge is : with Canon APSC-Mirrorless, there is no nifty fifty - none. It is such a huge surprise - I could not believe it. The only way you will get a nifty fifty on a Canon M series body is with an adaptor, that costs over a 100 dollars if you buy the Canon version. So the vast majority of Canon APSC - M series users will be stuck with somewhat poor quality options - their M series kit lens., cos the really good glass is not in the M series lenses. but in the Canon EF series lenses. The clincher for me was realising that unlike Canon which has an EF-M-series for APS-C and RF for Full frame, with no compatibility whatsover between them - Sony seems to be the only one making it possible for me to cheap out on the body, and still use FF lenses on an APSC body, and moreso - without having to use an adapter, cos the mount is the same on Sony APSC and FF mirrorless cameras - the E-mount. I also felt that Sony's commitment to mirrorless cameras is so much better - that is about the only thing they make in cameras - mirrorless, nothing else. And in terms of the tragectory of improvement - for most people from beginner to early pro - I feel that the Sony ecosystem, is the one that allows one to stay on a Sony base for many years, at the least cost. At the very high end, I can imagine that there may be a need to move on to a DSLR or a Canon R, to take advantage of the variety of lenses that are now available to shooters of Canon DSLR or Mirrorless full frame cameras, and at that level the cost of a Canon and the lenses are easily justified. But for the vast majority of people taking photographs, the ability to start off with high quality lenses from Sony and 3rd parties, using FF lenses on an APSC- body like an A6400, knowing that you can easily move to a FF Body like an A7 without having to change lenses - nobody else seems to provide that flexibility that Sony has. You cannot use high end R series lenses on a Canon M series body, no. Sony FF lenses are not cheap, but I do not think they are more expensive than the R series lenses from Canon - which are the direct competition. So its Sony for me, much better choice of directly compatible lenses of a high quality, when I feel the need to start using better lenses, than I would have with a Canon. All the very best lenses from Canon will now be the R series lenses, which the M series bodies will never be able to use...! So with Sony, you can start with budget APS-C bodies and budget APSC-lenses, move on to FF professional lenses, on the same body, and eventually move on to FF professional bodies,. preserving all your investments, including being able to use an APS-C lens on a Sony FF body (albeit with a crop). So the ecosystem of Sony preserves your investment a whole lot more than that of Canon, giving you a growth path and better long term value that the Canon ecosystem. Furthermore if you had to adapt a non Sony lense using an adapter, the same adapter will work on Sony APS-C and FF bodies. With Canon, if you switch from an APS-C M body to FF R body, unless your previous lenses were Canon EF or EF-S, you cannnot use any other 3rd party lens directly on a Canon RF Full Frame body - Canon has locked that in - you are suck with Canon RF or via an adaptor to EF lenses. With this development, at this time, therefore the only camera for which third party high end lenses will be available natively is Sony - making an even further case for choosing Sony mirrorless bodies.

I shot with Nikon for the next 40 years working with newspapers and magazines. As I grew older and seldom shot weddings I looked for something lighter. I had never heard about m 4/3 but became a Panasonic shooter with several lens. My oldest son introduced me to Fuji and I entered Fuji by buying the 27mm Len before I had a camera because it was on sale. I have a Pro 2 and XT20. You sold me on the XT20. Omar, you always do such a great job explaining complex issues, artistic, technical and behavioral. I was a pro who shot Nikon for 50 years after my dad bought me a Nikon F in 1964 when I was just 15. I owned every pro film and digital model up to the D810. There’s no doubt I had brand blindness combined with GAS. I never looked at other brands, compared them, thought much about value for the dollar, or even wanted to talk about them. But when I retired, I wanted something smaller, lighter and mirrorless; Nikon didn’t have it, so I added Fuji, thinking I would also keep my Nikon gear. I’ve been so happy with the Fuji gear that I was able to unceremoniously dump all the Nikon stuff. Now, 4 years later, I wonder if I’m getting another case of brand blindness.

The decision to stay with Canon is I trust it, I know the color, I know the UI really well and I just don’t see any benefit of switching. Now if we’re talking about a Phase1, that’s a deferent and more interesting conversation. But modern mirrorless (and DSLR) systems are not far enough a part to justify a video like like this. It’s whatever feels good for you and gets you the best images possible. People are right, it’s a tool. At the end of the day, it’s about your work.

My main income is from my work in IT, but I do paid event shoots for one specific client regularly. So I'm mostly just a slightly paid camera enthusiast. That's so you understand my background. But for shooting these events (art gallery openings, perfomances, etc) I use my Fuji X-T3 (switched from Canon 6D more than a year ago. Was shooting Canon for 10 years). I love the results. My client loves the results. And I love the cameras and lenses themselves. Sounds shallow - but I REALLY like the way my cameras look. Especially my newly-acquired X-E3 with the 27mm f2.8. That's just a super nice looking pocket monster-camera. Love it. :)

I switched from Canon to Fuji , I love how you said the whole value thing because thats what I always tell my friends , canon is definitely taking the “Apple” approach with their pricing, and features to price ratio . I love how Fuji puts out new software updates and focuses on the consumer more than trying to be a monopoly

Hey Omar, glad I found your channel. I bought my first Canon (after using my Dad's Canons) in 1992, and stuck with them until 2006, when I went digital and switched to Nikon for a few years. Then went back to Canon. Finally, I couldn't shake the feeling that Canon was refusing to create the perfect all-around camera for me... which I found in the Sony A7RIII : fast, high resolution, compact, great video features. It covered me for just about anything that I needed, so I switched again. I don't like the expense of switching, of course, but I have to use the tools that make sense for the kind of work that I do.

Great valid points! I wish you made this video a few months ago. I can’t yet afford to switch brands. I wish Canon had that great dynamic range as well. So many things you talked about made a lot of sense. But no matter what you shoot I’ll still be here watching your videos. I just got my R5 2 days ago. It was on back order for 3 months. I thought about canceling my order. I thought about the price I was paying and the prices of the RF lenses. Now that I have my R5, I wish it was the size of my 5D Mark IV and III. The R5 looks like a toy. Kinds of reminds me of my first Canon consumer camera with a built in zoom lens. I hope it meets my expectations. Time will tell. Thank you for being honest Omar.
