So there is a theory that's kinda of similar that the big bang gets to the point where it falls in on its self. Once it reaches the smallest it could get and so dense that it then creates another big bang and it's a nonstop cycle so it could be possible. And maybe we are the second or even the millionth life cycle of the universe

My grandfather wrote The Man From Earth. I was hoping to see a reference in the comments, thanks for making my day :) It's really cool seeing a lot of the themes he raised in sci-fi being explored in other mediums. His Trek episode "Requiem for Methuselah" is another earlier instance of him visiting this same premise, in case anyone is curious to check that out.
4 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's 14000. I watched only 2 minutes of this video so far, and went to the comments thinking this would be the top one. I had to dig deeper. :( One of the best movies I ever saw, though I didn't read Bixby's book.

@@ItsAsparageese Nice to "meet" you! Didn't your father/uncle write The Man From Earth sequel?
@ItsAsparageese
@ItsAsparageese 4 жыл бұрын
@ First, I'm obviously biased, and also biased toward the medium because short stories are my favorite -- but since you dug the film, I highly recommend Jerry's short stories, if you get a chance. "The Slizzers" is a particular favorite of mine (so creepy! So meta! Such a pure simple elegant example of my favorite elements in sci-fi/horror short stories!) and it's on Gutenberg. I'll grab a link
4 жыл бұрын
@@ItsAsparageese Thank you! I forgot to mention (though, I think this goes without saying), I feel honored to have this conversation with you. I've seen the movie a dozen times (at least), but I haven't found the book published in my country. I also read most of "mainstream" sci-fi and my favorites so far are Asimov's Empire-Robots-Foundation series (sorry if I mixed up the titles, I was reading it in my native language), Dan Simmons' "Hyperion" series and Clarke's "Childhood's End". I'll try to find an e-book of your grandfather's "The Man From Earth" (and also the short story you mentioned), and I will probably add them to the list. Edit: Forgot to say, I also love short sci-fi stories; while I love the format (short bursts of reading while waiting for bus, for example), they have also made me look for more "full-size" novels by the authors if I really liked them. I got a small library of 80's short stories sci-fi magazines that my parents collected. Edit 2: Found "The Slizzers" on gutenberg, thanks!

It would be great that we found an immortal person in the sense that it would answer the incognite about the soul, overall I would say that the problem with life tends to be that we see death as the end because we haven't found anything that would say otherwise. Either way I have learnt to be ready for nothingness and if when I die I discover that my thinking was wrong then that's even better than being right lol.

Really cool concept. I would still want to be immortal though. Life whether you are immortal or not will have up and downs. Some of those downs can last long long times but there will be an up at some point and if you continuously keep training yourself to handle hard situations well the bad things won't seem as bad and the good will still feel good.

I was thinking the SAME thing, as a miniseries, maybe 24 episodes, with each episode spanning millennia, maybe with some Great Idea being realized, and a new problem coming up, related to it, like super intelligence becoming common, then getting out of hand, or, people living hundreds of years, but, having no purpose, like, you're 145, healthy, but, no consuming passion, left to strive for!
