My japanese boyfriend tried to grow out his "beard" once. He has little facial hair growth but we both wanted to see how it looks on him grown out and as he has to wear a mask to work all day, it was easy to hide. The result however turned out to be... mmh... very uneven and underwhelming :D (even though I thought it suited him half way through). I think a lot of japanese men have similar problems. When they grow out their facial hair it often looks patchy and thin and just genetically speaking it's rare for them to be able to grow out a proper beard in the first place (of course there are exceptions). Maybe that's one more reason for the negative associations. I also had a student friend from my japanese studies department (in Europe) who always proudly talked about his well groomed beard, what products he used and how happy he was that he decided to grow a full beard because with his facial hair growth rate shaving was really damaging and irritating to his skin. His nickname was Hige-san by the way. Anyway, when he went to do an internship at a Japanese bank (or company, I don't remember) in a european city, he had to shave all the time. And his work place wasn't even in Japan. Oh how I pitied him... Hige-san looked very naked without his beard. I think it's a shame that in Japan the public opinion seems to be "all facial hair = bad". I personally think that a well groomed beard (no matter the size and shape) and a clean shaven face both are a sign of cleanliness. In the end it should matter what you do with what you have.

Most of my foreign friends in Japan with Japanese wives or girlfriends have facial hair. Japanese women don't like Japanese men with facial hair, but not so much foreign men. Same goes with tattoos. Hi Yuta - There are some companies in the US that still do not allow facial hair. I remember my dad turned down a job offer once because they told him he would have to shave his beard. Famously, the Boston Red Sox do not allow players to have facial hair and have strict grooming standards. One player, Johnny Damon (that guy had the perfect beard!), was traded to the Sox and he had to shave. It was kind of a big deal back then. But the social acceptance is of course very different and right now, full beards are super popular. When I was a kid they weren't popular. I live in Japan and have a beard in the cooler months. I just shaved, and I feel like more people are sitting next to me on the train.

This is a pretty interesting topic, looking into the western traditions of facial hair we can find that our direct ancestors (the Yamnaya) were actually shaping their beards thousands of years ago to show maturity, power, and status. The amount of insults we have towards young men historically for not being able to grow facial hair is also very telling of the importance of the beard/mustache in western society, even to this day it's a big source of insecurity for many men in our society if they can't grow facial hair, even if they don't want it as apart of their regular appearance.

I don't think that was always the case in modern Japanese society either. I always thought Toshiro Mifune was an example of rugged Japanese masculinity, and he had quite a few roles with facial hair. I always imagine him with a stubble rather than clean-shaven for some reason. He may have only done it for his period roles though, lol. That said, I'm not sure he was even considered a heartthrob in Japan or not, though, or he and Kurosawa's films actually got more attention outside Japan rather than in Japan. But for a long time I assumed if Japanese girls liked any amount of facial hair, it'd be a stubble, not a full beard. Even outside of Japan, growing out a beard is a recently popular thing, actually... among men at least, I don't think they asked for the opinion of women before that, lol. Maybe the majority of women in the world never liked facial hair at any moment in history, ever, and any time it got popular it was only due to men wanting for feel more "masculine", lol. I always found it interesting that the ideal male for Japanese women seems to be more physically feminine. "Cute" isn't only a top quality in girls when it comes to the opinion of guys, but it's the same thing when it comes to guys in the opinion of girls, apparently. Even when you look at BL manga, which is made for female readers, the guys could be mistaken for girls. Then there's the popularity of cross dressing. Meanwhile, more western ideas of male masculinity (muscles, hairiness) are associated with the gay scene in Japan, lol.

I thought your comment was going to have a wholesome end to it like "and then be as nice as possible to shatter prejudices"

@@bushy9780 if in the 21st century there are still people who judge your personality on the basis of something ridiculous like having a beard or not, it means that these people do not deserve to be considered \ saved from their ignorance because ... Come on! it's too stupid !! There is a limit to everything, even to dialogue and it is ridiculous to be nice just to be accepted and "try to change" their opinion. If they are as smart and advanced as they make the world believe, then they should get there on their own. Not having a certain job just because you have a beard is worthy of the worst communist regimes. Asians have this bad habit of obeying without asking questions.

@@ginger942 okay, but this guy (the OP) said he was going to do it just to troll them and for no other reason. I get what you're saying but I was just pointing out how absurd it is to do something solely because it annoys other people. He's literally going out of his way to be a d bag. I also understand it's mostly a joke anyways, but the idea is so stupid man. Btw, I have a full beard and tons of hair everywhere else hence my PFP. So to tweak the old saying, "I have (hairy) skin in the game"

Aside from artists and other independent jobs, I noticed that there are many CEOs who have beards. Interestingly enough, all the employees have to shave except the CEO.

Yuta is 100% correct about beards. I'm not Japanese but when I went to Japan before the pandemic I was not aware of this. Japanese women pretended that I did not exist and I didn't even have a big beard, just heavy stubble. Near the end if my trip I decided to shave and it was as if I had transformed into charisma man. Japanese women suddenly became friendlier to me. The change in attitude was so dramatic. I just wish I had found out sooner.

One thing I noticed it’s that the ladies might not like the beard but it’s surprisingly popular amongst gay guys! My company doesn’t have a black and white policy for beards so it varies from department. I think I’m allowed because my boss is chill and I don’t have a typically Japanese face.

To a Western woman and to me who is a Western man, your beard looks great on you. It helps define the shape of your face and looks masculine. It's only uncleanly on an uncleanly person, just like the hair on your head.

It's funny bc it's seems to be a Asian thing, not only in Japan. I know that vietnamese woman are very adverse towards beards as well, probably even more than the Japanese, and also the with Korean woman, it's seems to be similar.

At least there's still ppl who like having facial hair in Japan. I see a lot of Japanese celebrities and football players with facial hair. Compare this to other East Asian countries like korea or china where seeing a bearded dude is literally like finding a rare Pokemon.

BTW! Not all the Japanese girls hate the facial hair, a good example is my Japanese girlfriend, she actually love the facial hair because it looks more manly and guys should keep it and take care of it. so don't feel disappointed! there's some hope there!

I'm Japanese and I think Asian guys in general look HOT with facial hair. You will see a lot of Facial hair in the Japanese Gay Community because it looks more masculine. Japanese women and maybe some straight men might prefer clean shaven but not all Japanese people hate facial hair.
