Why is Sex Education so behind in Japan? Are chlamydia rates as high as Meng thinks they are? Come with us as we sit down with Sex Ed Drag Performer, Labianna, and discuss the current landscape of Sex Ed in Japan and where foreigners can access sexual health services when in the country.

I'm a foreigner living in Japan. I've become very sexually active lately. One day, I went to a hospital ( it's not a small hospital) for other reason (I had a bad cold). After finishing everything, I felt like I wanted to have STD test. I asked a female nurse for the information. She gave me a surprise look and said there is so such service in the hospital. Speechless

I've learned a lot more about sexual health from this video than what high school attempted to teach me in the States. And I think it's much more convenient to have this sort of information online, so while schools and parents are trying to shove the responsibility on each other (and ultimately do nothing about it), at least the information is accessible to us, and we have forums like these to share our stories and help each other out without being embarrassed.

From my experience, I feel like they think STI’s are a “western disease”. But from the many straight and gay Japanese, men and women, that seems to be the ideal they have.

Had a similar experience when I was living in Taiwan for ~9 months and definitely felt there was a bit of a disparity between the services there and in Australia 😅 At one point I had this sore throat that wouldn't go away, and it was impossible to find any STI clinics that weren't stupidly expensive. So eventually I went to an ENT, but the whole time I was surrounded by old Taiwanese ladies, and was not prepared to explain in broken Chinese to the Taiwanese grandpa sticking things up my nose that I've been uhh... a little too active 😂😭 They just gave me random nameless medications and sent me on my way (didn't help) Also just a heads up, so I used to work in a sexual health centre, testing once a month is generally not advised! Even sex workers and others who have lots of sex are advised to get tested no more than every 3 months to avoid getting false positives. PS thanks for discussing this topic, very important!

Sex ed here in the Philippines is bordering on criminally negligent. But to be fair, back in Texas we were not even taught (the ridiculous) abstinence... we were not taught anything at all! I was a single dad and made sure my kids were taught whatever they needed - at age appropriate levels.

This was very informative, guys. I always imagined Japan to have lower STI rates since people are less extroverted about sex, but I guess the less sex is openly discussed, the less people are educated about STI prevention. Will definitely keep this in mind for when I'm finally able to travel there.

For those of us a little bit older, it is positive to see another generation feel free to speak openly and express freely about life, love, and intimacy. Everyone deserves a full and rich life with no limits on where life can take you (professionally and personally). Never a boring episode. At this time I think the Internet is a great resource for finding local information about services and testing as it allows one to avoid dealing with medical people who are ill-informed or simply not able to grasp the reality of what services people actually need.

I've actually asked teens if sex ed is still being taught in the school system in the states. I've had so many people say no, which makes me shake my head. Sex is all over the place. Now, nobody is perfect. I'm so thankful you guys were so honest about unprotected sex. Most wouldn't admit it, but condoms aren't used by the many. I'll be honest, I hate using them. I'm a top and they just squeeze me too tight and I don't feel anything. It's just uncomfortable. I rarely have sex. Maybe once a year if I'm single, but I still get tested and I always ask the other guy when was their last test results. As far as education goes, the WORLD really needs to be more open and be comfortable talking about. I'm lucky that my parents are extremely open and will talk about anything. My Dad even gave me sex tips, although I wish he would have left that out. Lol I don't need details of him and Mom. Lololol

This was fabulous. Thank you all. I got lucky. My education in High School was very thorough. To the point where for about a year i was literally afraid of having sex. Graphic slides of what the extreme cases of some STI look like. Nurse came and discussed the symptoms and effects of STIs on the body. (STD in my day) That is not always the case everywhere in America though. I can't vouch for now-a-days though. No connection to gen z's either. I hope Japan gets better about those kinds of discussions.

As a teacher, I think Asian schools generally lack an understanding of sex and sexuality. In my country, sex is such a taboo topic, even among science teachers. They are not comfortable talking about it. Our books do not teach us enough information about sex and anything sex-related. I remember we only teach it when students reach 10th grade. It is not even comprehensive like it would last for only 3-5 sessions. As a result, kids as early as 12 to 15 get STIs or unwanted pregnancies.

I think its not just in japan, its more like south east asia. Like here in the philippines, being the only catholic country in south east asia, its kind a preference if you wanna talk about it or not. But most of the older generation here dont want to teach sexual education on children. Its like in japan, you talk about it in school but its very vague. The lgbt community is very active with the use of condom and sexual education, but ofcourse there is resistance from the religious community because they still think of sexual education is taboo to be taught in school.

One more thing I wanted to add is that I've had foreigners visiting or even living in Japan have a part of responsability about the situation in Japan. They have this idea that Japan is indeed a safe country with far less STDs than anywhere else and that bareback here is quite harmless. A couple of years ago, I started chatting with an American guy in Nichome and somehow ended talking about sex. I'll spare you the conversation but it was shocking. His points were 1) you don't risk much here so bareback is fine and 2) (verbatim!) "anyway, even if you get Hiv you can live with it just fine with it now". I left with a "You're a moron" right after he said that.

I am a freshman in college from California. Basically all sex ed materials looks like it was produced in the 90s. Basically every year since 5th grade until 9th grade there was some sort of sex ed but usually only the basic stuff. (Male/female anatomy, puberty, how birth works) Honestly, the only other thing I learned was in 5th grade vaguely about HIV being transmitted through blood/sexual intercourse and that vaguely some sort of treatment. Ofc nothing about LGBT+ stuff. Most of the LGBT stuff I know mainly comes from the internet which is a big yikes 😬

Let's take a moment to appreciate the bravery of them! So courageous to not pretend STIs aren't a common thing and be brave to share your own raw feelings *no pun intended* Glad you addressed the stigma associated with telling someone or vice-versa. Glad you mention prep isn't a bulletproof thing and that's kinda the problem here too. I would say Andrew to keep to your integrity and morals and tell them and it's their denial or loss - maybe it was them who caught it and wanted to have an 'out' by guilt-tripping you never know. Meng's comment haha if it's not in my mouth it's in my butt. If people rim, oral and kiss that''s how it spread from butt to mouth and back. Queue track 🎶 Lion King Circle of Life.

OMG!!! How did you talk Meng into doing this? Meng gets an award for even going along with this. I was laughing so hard at Meng's expense and he had to know it. Good for you Meng. You have my respect because I would have told Andrew where he could shove the idea of me debasing myself for all of KZbin (and we know it was your idea Andrew). On the subject of the video...was it really any surprise to anyone how and why Japan sucks at sex education? You never have to go to Japan to know that the Japanese are very conservative and talking about sex is not something that they are going to do or even consider doing if there is any way around it. I think I have met college age Japanese men and women who still had no idea how babies were made. The idea of a large bird flying in and dropping off a kid sounded about right to them (don't get uppity with me...you Japanese know who you are...). Andrew, as gay men we are all dirty sluts at some level. You are doing the right thing to tell partners about a positive test for some STI (chlamydia or whatever) or even a close call. If they block you then that is their problem and you need to ask yourself if you really want to associate with people who bury their heads that far in the sand when it comes to talking about sex anyway. I have had people come to me and tell me that they had tested positive for this or that and that I should get tested. I have never thought poorly of them or not spoken to them again because it is not like they were looking to catch an STI and then expose other people. It sometimes happens even if both parties are being careful and to place blame isn't solving anything. Be careful and follow your own best practices policies. That does not mean that you might or might not be exposed to chlamydia or something like that because who wants to perform oral sex with a condom and not every person that has chlamydia knows that they have it yet. That is the risk and if people think you are a slut for the very same things that they are doing themselves, then they are not someone you want to associate with any further. Enough said on this subject!

I don't recall ever coming across a sex ed from an external vendor ever, and the sex ed in schools mainly fell on either the form teacher in a very brief dedicated class period, or the biology teacher who presented scientfic facts on the human body but nothing more. Doesn't help that LGBTQ+ is hardly touched upon if at all, certainly no thanks to local laws in place (see S377A) + persistent conservative culture. If anything, there's a focus in post-schooling sex ed towards fertility for heterosexual couples wanting to have kids, certainly as an approach to tackle Singapore's ageing population with falling birth rates

Well, Meng, on the downside: chlamydia; on the upside: sex!!!! LOL Andrew, I was 15 in 1984: the year AIDS burst on the national news scene. My puberty coincided with "sex=death." So I can totally understand what you're talking about in relation to your sixth grade sex ed experience. Big hugs. Also, even here in the States, I've been in that awkward position where I know I've killed a potential relationship by being open with someone about having an STI (in some instances before, in others only discovering it after, sex). Big hugs for that, too. (They totally didn't deserve you!) Labianna is really cool. I have OCD, so I am, like, after every hookup "I know I have everything! Except HIV because I'm on PrEP! But I have to get checked, instantly!!!" So, the issue of expense when it comes to an STD check-up is a real red flag. Thanks for addressing this.

I find it hard to take in. Pornography is ubiquitous in Japan. But STD is still a taboo. Hmmmm

Sex education is so important and yet it's so sad that it's not taught well in many countries across the world. I've had sex ed in China and the US. It sucked in both countries. Not very informative, not very inclusive, and many ways to get it out of it using "academics" as an excuse :'( I actually learned the word "contraceptives" for the first time in my environmental science class XD
