Absolutely LOVE Jarvis, best guy we have for the sport, by far and there are some great guys. Even if he had a kick starter you would have kicked until your leg fell off. Such a shame. Jarvis is the goat and by far my favorite to watch. I guess the idea behind the D.Q. Would be that any racer could have a decent mechanic enter the race as a competitor and keep an eye out for “their guy” on the trail, help him iron out any mechanical issues if they see him down, and it’s not cheating because it’s another racer. Comes down to shit luck I suppose. Hope Jarvis has another year in him!!!

Though the 'mechanic' would have to be a kick ass rider himself to be able to participate. In Erzberg it's 1500 drivers narrowed down to 500 starting for the main event.

It was the fuel line connection not being fully clicked in. You can hear that it's fuel starvation. It sort of starts but then bogs down with any throttle. Straight away I though fuel. The plug wouldn't give those sort of symptoms

On the surface, that does not look like a DQ, as the help he received was from another rider. I did see the guy in the blue shirt, touch the front light a couple times... maybe that was considered outside help? I'd like to see the actual rules used for grounds of DQ. He certainly gained no advantage, starting at the very beginning and hour after everyone else. This was a career defining ride to come from an hour late start to 10th. This solidifies him as the GOAT from here to eternity.

The spark plug on a TPI 300 can be changed without completely removing the fuel tank but it needs to be loosened from the shrouds and center securing bolt enough to lift it up a bit for clearance. It helps to put dielectric grease on the spark plug rubber insulator cap to speed removal and installation. In thousands of operating hours I have never seen a spark plug insulator crack because of running through water. TPI spark plugs can last 200 hours. Those that fail early are usually in conjunction with degraded MAP sensors, degraded coolant temp sensors, or because of too much injected oil during cold start cycles because of improper warm up. The factory plastic dry break fuel fitting is problematic. It can shear on impact, and the fuel can fail to flow through even if it clicks together upon reassembly. The tiny O ring is a unique size and can leak when nicked. Fuel flow through the fitting is almost impossible to check trailside. The best way is to disconnect a fuel line past the dry break fitting and hit the starter. This is impossible with the factory fuel clamps. I replace mine with field serviceable fuel injection clamps for this reason. In the shop a fuel pressure gauge can quickly determine if the fuel pump is working and providing 50 PSI. One can also remove the fuel cap and look into the tank and see if any fuel is being returned into the tank from the pump. I carry a 2’ length of fuel hose fitted with the injector side half of the dry break fitting. With this I can quickly test the fuel system trailside. Takes 60 seconds. In any no run scenario take the dry break fitting apart and reassemble it. Sometimes that is all it takes to restore fuel flow. Just leaning on the starter button and running down the battery is a bad idea. Once the voltage drops below 10.5 volts the ECU won’t work and the fuel pump won’t pump, regardless of whether you have a kick starter installed or not. Always save enough battery to run these two critical components, or you won’t be able to tow start it either. I carry a spare battery or jumpers in my van for such contingencies. An emergency starting capacitor will only provide enough energy for a brief starting attempt. Also remember that poor electrical grounds can mimic the same failures. KTM models in particular frequently fail at the bonding point of the battery ground cable and the rear aluminum subframe. The dissimilar metals ( steel and aluminum) react when electricity passes through them, gradually breaking down the conductivity of the connection. I have seen bikes fail because of this in as little as 2 years. Take all your battery and starter connections apart every year, clean them, and reassemble with dielectric grease, especially in damp or humid operating conditions. In extreme cases an extra ground cable was run directly from the battery to the engine. Always carry an extra new spark plug and a thin spark plug wrench. Good luck. I have learned all this the hard way.

Totally unfair for them to DQ Jarvis. To go from 500 to 10th with an injured bike is something that people will be talking about for years, it brings attention to the sport. To DQ such a feat is a mistake. I know there is a diagnostic criteria cascade, I am surprised (at least as it appeared) at how much time the mechanic spent trying to force the bike to run. Fuel, air, spark, compression and timing. I feel like this diagnostic session shouldn't have taken an hour. However, easier said from my computer chair rather than with a full blown adrenaline dump at the start of the race. First verify spark which he did by zapping himself (apparently these bikes wont spark if there is no pressure wave from the CCPS so you need 2 spark plugs to confirm spark via grounding). Once spark is confirmed, address fueling as it is unlikely that timing, compression, or air are the problem. If unable to address or investigate fueling I would have swapped an ECU next. Could have had Graham swapping ECUs while he worked with the sparkplug. Really surprised they did not have a spark wrench in their gear bag. Really interested to see that they appear to use a lot more aftermarket stuff than I thought. For instance I was under the impression the factory guys ran the stock map and head. Further sold on the TSP kit after seeing this video.

I had the same experience with my '20 300 XCW TPI after doing some routine winter work on bike wherein I had removed, drained fuel tank to check compression @ then 115 hrs. As spring time came, with fresh fuel added in tank, I rode bike ~ 1 mile w/o opening power valve, then bike simply died when opening to 3/4 throttle as if running out of fuel! Let it sit, started & died couple times, then nothing. After tow back to my shop, found the culprit to be that the KTM design alum insert/cone filter wasn't fully latched into the plastic quick disconnect!!!!!. No fuel leaks seen. Obviously fuel flow was restricted by plunger of QD. My lesson learned is to assure proper connection and full latch of fuel components. BTW, I redesigned the 90 degree fuel tank fitting using 6061 alum to connect directly to a chrome plated brass QD, eliminating the 90 degree formed hose creating a more robust unit for hard enduros---applications 2S TPIs and FI 4Ss. If interested, email me, MAS-Designs@TWC.com Limited availability.

"One of the rules at the Iron Giant is that outside assistance from mechanics or any other team members and even spectators is not allowed." Why are so many in the comment section struggling with this. It couldn't be more clear.

If you don't understand how jam packed every hill climb and single track is an hour into the front runners leaving the start...imagine the L.A. 5 on a Friday before a holiday and you're on a moped. Yup...that screwed. 10/11 over all is an epic ask. Just like check points...rules are rules. Sketchy at best. Jarvis was an absolute beast

That was cracked plug from water. Thermal shock. Exact same happened to my buddy on brand new bike. When I used to do a bit of racing the best top tip I ever had for running issues was to always start with the plug. 👍 Listening to the commentary here though... a poorly connected fuel line could also be the cause here but we'll never know 😄👊👊 Rotten luck Mr Jarvis sir. At least you got to ride which is more than can be said for the rest of us 😄👍👍

Curious why others were not disqualified for getting assistance, for breaking rules. Interested in why the bike ran perfectly 30 minutes before the race and the issue was a poor connection for the fuel line which wouldn't just happen. The recluse factory cover is just that, a cover that Jarvis has a few of from being a factory rider, though they keep getting stolen. Officials can't seem to keep any security in the paddock when it come to Jarvis' bike.

It could happen actually. I change filter on my bike on a Friday, rode all day Saturday with no problem. Then on Monday the bike stalled and wouldn't restart. Turned out to be a loose fuel connection, exactly like in this video. Nobody touched the bike between the 2 rides.

I disagree with most of these comments. At the Pro level, rules are rules. If you start allowing wiggle-room, with money on the line, it WILL get exploited. The low finish rate of Erzberg makes it special. So special even the GOAT cannot finish every year. That's not a problem to be solved.

In-line fuel filter not clipped in all the way? I sold my 2016.5 KTM 450sxf and was showing the purchaser where the filter was when he bought it. Rang me up next day irate that I’d sold him a piece of shit, took a while for me to click to the problem, I obviously didn’t push it right in after showing him. I thought he might’ve cooked the ECU coz he was jump starting it off of his van’s battery. Needless to say he wasn’t a happy camper 😂

Looks like not many here know what actually happened and this video is misleading because it doesn't have footage of Grant coming over. The rules this year were no outside help and even Graham didn't argue this which is why is did not protest the result to pick up the 6 points he would have received for his 10th place finish: “It’s fair enough,” says Graham straight up. “Grant helped and touched my bike and that’s a rule.”

Absolutely dumbfounded as to why it's ok to DQ Jarvis when the leaders took a wrong turn/short cut early on in the race and didn't get a time penalty or DQ'd for leaving the course? It clearly isn't his mechanic working on the bike either. none of it makes sense. That overnight change to the course at motorex highway was BS too, i mean its meant to be hard, i get it but not impossible!

What the hell are they doing ?! This is a simple 2 Stroke Jarvis should be able to change a spark plug himself it is not hard and it is very common that they break on 2 strokes. If this would have happened to me i would have changed the spark plug first before i am trying anything else, because that is the only thing i would be able to repair there. If the fuelpump breaks its already game over, but a spark plug ? I have allways one in my backpag.
