Awesome video and video topic! Thank you! I hated that they released it as a single because it was clear to me they were trying to make him a heartthrob. His comment about the "least initiated" is spot on - if this was the first JM song you heard, you were likely going to see him as a one-man boy band, out of the context of this mind-blowingly beautiful and brilliant debut album, which I listened to on repeat for almost 2 years. I love it for what he meant it to be. But it should have remained a deep cut.

I’ve got a complicated relationship with this song. When I started learning guitar, I studied every song Mayer released at the time which included Inside Wants Out and RFS. I loved all the riffs and chords including on this one, but over the years the song became more and more cringe to me, and then years down I kept hearing it in my doctor’s office, the grocery store, the bank…it felt like I could never get away from the track that makes me think of MY high school girlfriend and the awkwardness of it all. I don’t think I’ll ever come back around to it-in fact I skip it every time I play that record, but I’m glad it exists for what it was in my life.

one of my favorite bridges in all of JM songs
@CommonRevolt20 күн бұрын
I remember when I first heard it, I almost thought the bridge was the start of a new song. It’s just that good.

Hell yeah. The switch in the guitar part is so sweet. And they cut it short for radio brevity.

He's right... It's one of those bookmark songs for the year 2002. Along with Timberlake's "Like I Love You" 50's "In Da Club" Nelly's "Hot in Herre" Avril's "Complicated" Missy's "Work It" Eminem's "Without Me" Eve's "Gangsta Lovin'" and a bunch more of great songs!

I feel like I’ve come full circle on this song the way John has. It was fun at first, got a little embarrassing (and honesty he put out better stuff after), and now I think it’s a fun cheeky song again.

He should follow up with "Your body is a jizz spittoon"

We can start saying that the song is pure pop. Those lyrics are a bit irrelevant socially, but even that, I can say that the musicality itself is great.

I liked this song when I was young, thought of this guy exactly was pisses him off....I thought he was a 1 hit wonder or some artist like Neyo. I come to KZbin 20 years later and listen to these KZbin guitarists talk about John Mayer being a guitarist virtuoso....I still don't see it and yeah I believe him that he can hate that song, I'm the person who probably will never change his mind because it's too late

Daughters is way more cheesy than this song, also lyrically bland
@CommonRevolt20 күн бұрын
I agree tbh

Disagree. It’s got a timeless quality. But, it’s interesting and sad how often artists become defined by unrepresentative hit songs. More than Words by Queensryche. Or Brick by Ben Folds Five. Or this.
@Pete_Furlong17 күн бұрын
@@michaelbdoughertytotally. Daughters is actually a very profound, yet, simple song. I don't think people get the psychological depth in it. Btw I think you confused Queensrych for Extreme, but good point with those song example!

It’s ok John, we all hated "Your Body is a Wonderland." Song features some of the most cringe-inducing lyrics of all time 😅
