I think some credit should also be given to Aka, the mangaka, who has stated before that he wrote major moments, like this fireworks scene, so that they would fall on the season finale of the show. So around every 45 chapters you have something like the fireworks scene. The man is a genius

I really liked that they never reset the progress in their relationship, they always have to deal with the aftermath of the big moments, the extreme awkwardness that naturally comes with teenage romance is all there. Not to mention the importance that it gives to the secondary characters, going so far as developing some that might have seem as just part of a throwaway gag. I cannot wait for Ishigami's arc to be animated, along with the next big step between Kaguya and Shirogane as they learn to show their weaknesses.

Lmao. That shade towards season 2 of Bokuben. I fully agree with your analysis on the ending. It was incredibly refreshing to actually see progress like this in a romcom. Even though the afterwards shows how things appear to be back at square one, it's not truly the case. Kaguya has changed, ever so slightly. The net progress is one step forward.

What I love about Kaguya-Sama wants to be confessed to's anime aswell as manga, is that there is actually a really solid, believable and satisfying romantic progression. Although it could have easily gotten away with not having any at all due it's status as an (seemingly) episodic romantic comedy and it's stellar comedic writing.
@raymondthrone71975 жыл бұрын
Kaguya should be a great example of how to structure romantic progression in a long running manga. Despite the fact that it has to last for months upon months, it's very rare it ever feels stagnant, and not even necessarily because of _progression_ . The mangaka is very good at parceling out complications, B plots, new supporting characters, and active romantic progression so that it doesn't feel like the story is spinning its wheels.
@Red_Zealot4 жыл бұрын
My biggest problem with a lot of "romance" mangas is that they never seem to progress. Im amazed at how this anime/manga can spend so much time on developing supporting characters in meaningful ways while still making steady progress in the main relationship in a way that doesnt feel rushed nor drawn out.

This is nothing compared to what the story still has to tell us, what the anime has shown as so far is not even the 10% of how good it may get if the adaptation will have the same quality of season 1. Before we get to the actual story we need season 2 and hopefully 3 considering that 1 season is 40 chapters, and the actual story starts from chapters 60-70 and there are something like 160 chapters or even more right now, so there is lot of material still to be adapted. I highly recommend the manga too. Characters will get proper developments (Ishigami most of all, he is a fuckin hero), themes will get deeper and seen from a unique and outstanding point of view, the story will be intriguing and not trivial. Kaguya sama is not gonna end as you might imagine, there are plotwists, this is the reason why it is considered an ecception to rom com manga-anime and one of the best ones of the decade. It has a damn high 8.80 on Myanimelist, there is a reason for it. (and the comedy never gets you bored) P.s: i m not an english speaker sorry for my poor english

I think what makes this episode so powerful for me personally, is the fact Kaguya hoped so much that when she didn't first think she got it, she slumped into a pit of despair where she even lost her faith, only for it to be restored when the gang all came together to finally see the fireworks. It just felt like a beautiful moment to talk to people who may be struggling with their own despair to say that hope is always around the corner and you will find faith again in moments you most need it.

I see your point but I couldn't help but feeling that the return to the status quo undermines the fireworks scene. As you said they did their best so that didn't happen while leaving the possibility of a second season open but... It still felt like the fireworks scene didn't matter much in the end.

You see, if there's one season only, you should stop on fireworks scene, then it's perfect for how much of the material we've got, but the added 10 minutes make you ready for the continuation in the future seasons. Kaguya does have a couple of advantages that other romcoms don't have, that being that the main couple is set in stone from day one and it doesn't have to rely on cheap "Who will MC-kun end up with" gimmicks to keep its audience engaged, the engaging question being who will be the one to break first and confess. That's why they can get away with progress in the relationship, because you can feel every development is leading them to that moment. That's why other romcoms have to keep the winner as a very close guarded secret until the day of the revelation. Because at their core, romcoms which rely on harems to bait waifu connoisseurs are nothing but glorified horse races. Either you tease the main couple and risk losing those who came for the other girls early on, or choose a girl at the very end without having given the winning girl any sort of meaningful advantage over the rest, while hoping really hard that fans will do the mental gymnastics to justify your choice, which also risks a backlash of the pissed off fans of the losers, which sadly are usually around the 75% of your fanbase, given how many times the phrase "worst girl won again" is thrown around. Kaguya is a special anime I haven't seen since the likes of School Rumble and Seto no Hanayome, because it doesn't forget that a romcom is supposed to have comedy. All while pretty much every entry on the genre relies on heavy drama as a replacement for development and fanservice and waifu wars as an excuse to not be funny.
