I loved Resistance. Not because of the stories. Not because of the characters. Not even the Art style as a whole. But I did love the ship design. Every single ship looked alive and had a coolness to it. Go no further than the Colossus. It's not only an amazing piece of worldbuilding, it's an aesthetically pleasing design,

This trope you describe is way, way older than Star Trek and by like centuries. Moreover, when we first meet Kirk and Picard they are already captains of the Enterprise, one of the finest ships in Starfleet. We don't watch Kirk and Picard become captain. They are already competent and have a stellar crew. Kaz is like maybe 20 years old, pretty incompetent and assigned to a backwater station. We therefore relate to Kaz as he grows in a way we didn't with Kirk and Picard.

I've really enjoyed Resistance, despite it clearly being directed for kids, the time period and the Colossus as a location are something I've greatly enjoyed. While the show is filled with slapstick humour for kids, I agree that Kaz is genuinely a neat protagonist if you just stick around to see his character arc. The difference there is that Imperial (and later First Order) pilots are trained to fight "every man for himself." TIE pilots don't cover each other's backs, they don't work as a team. I personally found his goofiness really endearing, although it probably should have been toned down a dash. I do feel as if some of the characters were too harsh on him? He really is trying his best, and tearing him down is not going to help his already somewhat low self-esteem. Nor is it going to help him be more confident in his abilities and therefore better at them. If they allowed him to make mistakes, grow and gain experience from it, he would have improved faster. He's still young, and he's still learning. He does improve by the end, and he has a good character arc imo. I just feel like the other Colossus members didn't allow him to improve as much as they wanted him to.

Out of flight school, you spend an initial tour of duty flying the basic TIE fighter, which tend to kill off most of the rookie pilots. They survive that year, based on their skills they get moved to flying TIE Interceptors or Bombers. They survive that second tour, they got moved up to flying TIE Avengers and if they survived that tour, they got moved up to TIE Defenders. Not a man destined for greatness but a man who made himself great. Like, what if they actually looked into some of the borderline handwaved background of Obi-One and really pushed that as a Padawan the Jedi order almost gave up on him until a wise and patient teacher took him in and kept at it with him until both of their hard work produced the living Legend that was General Kenobi.

Kyle ruiz the sequels don’t have flaws, they ARE flaws. They are disjointed, schizophrenic attempts at storytelling by 2 different directors without any semblance of an overarching narrative, meaningful themes or interesting characters. The prequels were flawed movies, plagued by bad writing and George getting overambitious with the amount of themes and stories he wanted to cram into three movies. But they still worked as a trilogy with an overarching narrative, SOME interesting characters, and several different themes - in fact, TOO many themes. That is why the prequels will stand the test of time as flawed but important parts of the Star Wars story, while the sequels will not be viewed as anything more than what they are: disjointed, cash-grabbing attempts to create a new Star Wars saga that were mismanaged from the get-go, added nothing to the overall story to justify their existence, and should be viewed as separate from the saga, not a part of it.

@@darthknightwingphoenix2081 alot of what you said is incompetent. But 86% of the Audience scores approved of Ep 6 and ep 9 which is higher than ep 1 and ep 2 with 59% and 56% audience scores, whether they're "cash grabs" (which technically most if not all movies are) or not. And if you wanna blame anyone, blame the SW fan base, many people hated on George especially for Ep 1 and 2 leading him to sell it to Disney. He also admitted himself that his plans for a sequel trilogy pre Disney would've been disliked/hated on. So before you continue going all willy nilly and a sequel basher, Its giving new people and star wars fans new content to enjoy that people like you can just ignore or not talk about and just move on with your life, because people are enjoying alot of what Disney has made for SW; Rebels, CW season 7, Rogue One, Mandalorian, Ep 7 and debatably Solo and ROS

Kaz is a pretty good character ig. A very unique one in the Star Wars universe. Close to jar jar silliness but have good piloting skills. Btw I don’t count the way he shoots down vonreg, but I do give him credit for fancy flying tactics. Overall resistance brought a good cast of lovable sequel trilogy characters and gives us answers on some things.

The trouble with Kaz is that all the skills that make him a good pilot don't seem to rub off on his activities outside the cockpit. Combat flying requires sharp reflexes, an attention to detail, and a ability to focus. How does someone who can do those things in the cockpit instantly become so clumsy and scatterbrained the moment he gets outside of the cockpit? They barely trust him with a blaster. Kaz is a likable character all around, but it seems like there shouldn't be so much overlap between his talents and character flaws.

Ok so just hear me out, it seems to me like characters being annoying and insufferable at first but getting decent character development and ultimately becoming better is a reoccurring theme in star wars. Ahsoka Tano, Ezra Bridger and now Kaz. Now these three characters do stand on different ground though. Ahsoka had the most time to grow and found herself in the most difficult situations she had to deal with. She went from a snippy and rash padawan to a mature and selfless leader mainly because she grew up during the war. She then had a part to play in the rebellion and continued to help people across the galaxy. Ezras story takes place after the empire took over and he always had his friends to back him up and didnt need to adapt as much as Ahsoka did. He still grew as a character though and became much better and was much more mindful of his responsibilities. Now I cant say much about Kaz because I only saw the pilot of Star Wars Resistance, but I will say that I didnt immediately start hating the character and saw something there. He finds himself in a situation where he cant rely solely on someone else, he has to do things he is not good at and he has to deal with it. He is an underdog and acts kinda goofy but I genuinely think he could become a great character (might not happen due to the tone of the show, however, which I think is a damn shame) Everything you mentioned here is what makes him a compelling character, he only changes for the better thanks to hardwork and determination, I also think that he is not arrogant and tries to do better and does the right choices in the end. Might update this once I watch more of SWR. :)

Talent is a set of repeatable skills. If you know those skills you can get better at them through the right discipline and training. Some people will have a natural inclination but nothing is fixed. The problem is that people think talent is natural because they rely on what they are naturally good at doing instead of concentrating on improving where they are weak. Repeated practice relying on strengths to overcome weaknesses simply reinforces those weaknesses.
