People who consider the toys made in the 90's to be vintage need to be locked in the basement. Your video pretty much covered all the reasons they didn't release a Tarkin figure. Just to expand on your final point, they were planning on re-releasing the Death Star playset in 1986 with a revised top floor that would have included a chair for the Emperor so it could be used for either Death Star. That's why in 1985 they sold the Luke in Stormtrooper uniform and the Imperial Gunner. They were going to make a Han in Stormtrooper uniform and a Tarkin figure as part of the Power of the Force line, but declining sales caused them to cancel those plans. Hence, no Tarkin. There is a great article in Star Wars Insider Magazine from January/February 2003 that explains it.

I was always puzzled as to why Kenner put out an 'Amanaman' figure - which you can barely see in 'Return Of The Jedi', and also that weird 'Imperial Dignitary' figure, but no Grand Moff Tarkin. A character I really like - he's possibly the only character in the original 'Star Wars' who isn't afraid of Darth Vader, which, in my books, makes Tarkin a hard bastard, and more than a little frightening. I heard all the 'likeness rights' arguments, and it was all B/S - Peter Cushing was a really nice man, and, from what I know about him from other actors who worked with him, it would have pleased him greatly to have an action figure made of him, especially if it made other people happy playing with it. I have the Hasbro figure, which is a great likeness, capturing his gaunt face perfectly. When I bought it, my friend reckoned that it should come with a second set of feet - in carpet slippers, which is what Cushing wore on set, as the Jackboots he'd been given to wear, hurt his feet if worn for any length of time. Another great video, Junkman! And I love the new intro!

Honestly, if Ben Kenobi hadn't had that lightsaber duel with Darth Vader, then it's a good chance Kenner would have skipped making an action figure of his as well. The general wisdom is that young boys don't want to buy action figures of old men. However, they really had no choice with Ben, since he's the only one who directly fought Vader in the film.

Old Ben Kenobi was the first figure I ever had, in '77... He was the only one my parents could find at the time! Ehhh.. kenner kept producing all the earlier characters from 1978 through the tun of jedi figures... they always had the new hope figs along with all the others. It wouldnt have killed them to throw Tarkin in there. What i think really hurt them was that they refused to get with the times. They should have finished jedi figures, then go with modern tooling, with more articulation like gijoes. They might still exist now if they had done something new.

@jameskennedy43775 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. Kenner did not produce a Tarkin figure because they simply ran out of time. If the figures had been ready to hit the shelves in 1977, there would have been a third wave of vintage figures based on characters from the first film (as we had with TESB). What's interesting is speculating on what figures would have been included in a third wave. If you assume eight figures (using the number of figures from the second wave, not counting Boba Fett and counting the two Snaggletooth versions as one figure), my guess would be: Yavin Luke (as opposed to Stormtrooper Luke because Kenner did not seem able - or willing - to design/produce removable helmets at this point), Tarkin, TIE Fighter Pilot, Rebel Fleet Trooper, Evazan, Labria, Garindan, and CZ-4.

I always assumed that Tarkin wasn't as memorable a villain like Darth Vader to get a figure. I mean, other than telling Vader to stop force choking a colleague and ordering the destruction of Alderaan, there's not much else to him. And for the Kenner line, I think they should do the history of it like comic books, where there's a bronze, silver and golden age. That way, it would cut down on confusion (as you brought up, with the term "vintage" is hard to have a starting point of when something become vintage). But, that's just me, of course, and the only reason why the 1990s had him because more characters that had minimal screen time was being notified by fans and so it makes sense to include him along with other characters that were in one scene or seen somewhere in the background.

Friend, Junkman, forgive me if I end up echoing your comments...it is not intentional. I am typing in reaction to your comments. :) LOL! So funny that you mentioned the likeness of the Death Star Commander to Tarkin, because there was a couple of times in my youth (about 100 years ago) that I would use the DSC as Gov. Tarkin. I had Darth Vader Force choke him though.... "Only ONE black helmeted leader of the Death Star! You lose!" That second wave of figures... mostly aliens.... didn't a Cantina playset also release around that time? That's probably why wave two was so .... alienated. Yeah, it was pretty sad that they never released Gov. Tarkin in the original '78-'85 line. I did however manage to get Tarkin from the 90's PotF line (1996). The same lineup that gave us Luke Schkywalkenegger, Han Soloflex, and Rebel Trooper on Steroids. Thankfully, they didn't try to make ol Wilhuff look like a freaking Imperial Jackie LaLane....very obscure reference to a body builder from the 50s-70s. I also have a larger Grand Moff Tarkin figure from the Black Series. The likeness is astonishing. May the Force Be With You and Yours, Junkman!

I remember as a kid when Star Wars came on network TV and the many commercial bumpers kept saying "starring Peter Cushing and Alec Guinness" which always seemed weird to me because Alec Guinness was in more of a supporting role, and I wasn't really even sure who Peter Cushing was. A much older co-worker told me that when he saw the Special Edition in the theatre, the audience would applaud when popular characters made first appearances, which he thought was weird, especially for the droids, so he decided to clap when Tarkin appeared, but only one other person in the theatre did the same.

It would've been difficult for Kenner Products to know which "supporting characters" that the audience and even kids are going to focus in on. Sure, very few kids are gonna be horrraying for Tarkin in the audience and then begging their parents for a Tarkin figure at Christmas. Plus, Tarkin died in the first movie so Kenner might've thought, well, he won't even be around again so why make a figure of him, so there may have been a few reasons why they never made a Tarkin figure. As a kid, I remember using figures from other toy lines to stand in for characters not made by Kenner. I remember using Admiral Adama from the 70s Battlestar Galactica to fill in as my Tarkin figure. (Actor Loren Greene). Other possible stand ins could've been Dr Huer from Buck Rogers. They resembled Tarkin enough that a kid could've just painted the outfit gray or just used the figs as they were.
