That quote honestly made me think of something: what if our characters soul is strong not based on strength but based on the persistence to refuse to give up the knowledge and memories they gained. it's a good explanation for why our characters consciousness seems familiar over what's essentially a final death and having accepted it even when our character is not wanting to go: *as their soul is so determined to find every detail in every crack and every story from every tome and word of mouth that their soul sinks beyond what's considered impossible: to begin again and again in the pursuit of forging memories good and bad to the point that the soul gained strength through persistence.* it's a fair explanation considering that our character can have different starts and races but somehow retain knowledge that a new face wouldn't know

Kennith didn’t die to the guards, he died to regents tentacles. Look at the huge ass marks on the floor, tentacles burrowing in and out of the ground and when they reached the confused and disoriented kennith, they tore him limb from limb and set an example out of him.

It's important to note that Etris has the mental veil over it. Kennith mentions that after dying that he feels like a veil has been lifted, and that it was all so obvious. He questioned the regent despite the mental veil, he may not be physically that strong, but to resist the ministry's top tier gaslighting requires some mental willpower. He wasn't powerful enough to break the veil entirely, but he fought it enough to be a threat that the regent wanted to get rid of.
