I think that there's a lot more to some of the kinkier moments with Klaus than self-hatred. He 100% struggles with self loathing, and it's entirely possible that on some level he believes he doesn't deserve tender or loving treatment, but I think that it's possibly more interesting or accurate to look at in relation to his drug addictions. Klaus resides in extremes, it's where he feels most comfortable. He's either nearly dead from downers like herion or alcohol, or totally manic from uppers like cocaine. We also see the mania with the cult. Klaus is either living as a vagrant on the streets or as a totally disposable soldier, or exalted as a chosen one in a villa. BDSM can also be about extremes. Being choked has him on the far edge of consciousness, and the risk of death. Being hurt during sex also creates a totally immersive experience, it doesn't allow anything else to take his focus. Constantly keeping himself at these all encompassing extremes allows him to avoid reality and the mundanity of life. It allows him to avoid the realities of his own life especially: that he is deeply and crushingly lonely, that he has been abandoned by most everyone in his life and pushed away anyone who was left, that he has not healed from devastating trauma, and that no one else in the world can relate to his experiences with the dead which further emphasizes his isolation. Even his own abilities force him into a middle ground between life and death, and prevent him from forming connections because the living can't comprehend his situation, but the dead can't relate to him because he's still alive. I think Klaus is also someone who revels in experience, because he knows how quickly it goes away, and so the novelty of BDSM is likely also deeply attractive. Plus I think he just finds it plain old hot.

Whenever someone asks me who my favorite character is in TUA, I have a different answer for each season. Season 1, it's Viktor or Five, season 2 it's Alison or Five, and season three it's Viktor. However, those answers are all lies, because that's who my *second* favorite character is. Klaus is always my favorite. Always has been, always will be. I love my sexy trash man.

while i think klaus is often a very selfish character, i do think he's a lot kinder than his siblings on many occasions, particularly in relation to how they treat viktor in season 1 and 2. despite always being excluded and not taken seriously by his siblings, instead supporting their actions, perhaps to gain their approval, he always stands up for viktor. it's one of the things i love the most about him

I also started watching the show because of Robert Sheehan. I was a huge fan of Misfits When I was in High school, Iman American and It was the first British show I watched on Hulu when Hulu first became a thing. I really liked the umbrella Academy, but equally thought Klaus was the best character by far no competition period he is so similar to his character in Misfits. It's insane and also I feel like they have almost identical powers with the character in Ms. Fitz, seeing ghosts before he realized he was immortal. And Klaus literally going through the same thing of dying and resurrecting over and over, which is what we saw in Misfits. I think it's kinda crazy. That with an interview, robert sheehan said he didn't think the characters were similar at all because because there was actual emotional depth to klaus, as opposed to nathan when Both of them literally have the exact same super. I think each one of them, except maybe Five, grew a lot during the 3 seasons. Klaus for his nature is the most external one do his changements are more easy to be spotted and be followed. He is still my favorite because, well, Robert and the writing, but Five and Diego are my easily second. Diego, as well as Klaus, has a very interesting and clear groei g path while Five is just too much fun.

Although I feel a kinship of sorts with Viktor, as I'm also a trans man, Klaus is definitely my favorite character. A lot of the things he struggles with are things that I and people I'm close to have struggled with. The pressure from others, fear of disappointing others, giving up on meeting expectations, feeling worthless, addiction, breaking out of the mental state that lead to your current situation. I feel such a connection with his character and the growth he experiences, which I agree is much more impactful than that of the rest of the main characters. I feel like a lot of people write him off as a goofy fuck up because that's how his family treats him and that's how he views himself, but he's much more than that. I really appreciate having a queer character that has some actual depth and personality beyond his sexuality, as we're very much lacking well written LGBT characters. I feel like a lot of writers are scared of writing an LGBT character that is this flawed as a person out of fear of portraying an LGBT person in a "bad light," but this makes most LGBT representation very shallow and unrealistic. LGBT people are human, some of us are very flawed and fucked up, and that side of our community deserves to be shown in media. Not all of us are these perfect, idealistic people, so why should all queer characters be that way? Also, thank you for calling Viktor by his real name, even when talking about points in the series before his transition. A lot of people think of trans people before their transition as a different person or a different version, but that's not how it works. We're always trans because that's who we are, even before we're aware that we're trans. I've always been a man, even before I knew it, just like Elliot Page was a man before he came out, and Viktor as a character, in the context of the Netflix adaptation, was a man before he came out. The way that most fans of The Umbrella Academy have been supportive of both Elliot and how his transition was written into Viktor's character is really heartwarming in a world so full of hatred and bigotry.

Just as his family put him on the back burner and didn't give him his moments to shine, it seems that the writers did too while making the series. The show has gone downhill a lot as far as character writing is concerned. I get that the actor playing Vanya transitioning in real life would have made the character more difficult to play, but I think the transition of the character in-series was poorly handled. Out of the original seven, Klaus is the only character I feel has actually gotten more interesting throughout the series, while all of the others have either become more inconsistent or less likable. Viktor being the worst offender, and Allison not being much better. At least Ben had an excuse to become a jerk in the later seasons since he is literally a different person.

The actor who plays Klaus was in a UK series on Channel 4, called Misfits, years ago. Funnily enough, his power, then, was that he couldn't die. It was set on a council estate in London and there was a freak hail storm. Afterwards, many, many people had powers that were all different. The main group were on probation, doing community service and were working in orange boiler suits when the storm hit. Afterwards, they started to manifest different abilities. It was a very good series. One girl became telepathic, one girl became sexually irresistible, one lad could become invisible, one lad could go back in time to change his own life choices in the past then come forward to see how it affected him in the present. It was a very interesting concept. One character got split and each had very different personalities, then it was revealed that there was a third one that they had implicated to the police in a crime to get him put in prison. All hell broke loose when he came out. He was nuts. The same actor played all three, and he did it so very well. The funny aspect was that there was often a probation officer or someone they were involved with, and they got killed, so it always ended with them burying someone under a motorway underpass.
