We call that "pass the mic" challenge. We sometimes do that during seminars for checking of attendance, if you don't sing or take the mic you will be marked absent (haha...just kidding). Sometimes we just do it for fun.

We sing to express emotions like happiness, sadness, heartbreak and even pent-up anger. haha! through singing, we could let out our emotions. You’re blown away by the singing talent that we have here in the Philippines. However, I was also blown away by your music literacy. I have been to Korea. I was there in my early 20s. I joined a church choir comprising mostly of college students and young professionals. Most of them could sight read notes. We practiced for two hours on Wednesday and Friday and on Sunday we would sing the song. Here, you have to double the time of practice because we have to memorize the melody and the harmony of the song.

I asked where did you get your music sight reading skills. The answer was school. In the Philippines, the main music teacher is the karaoke. 😊

We Filipinos really sing for fun most of the time. It doesn't matter if you're good at it or not. Practice makes perfect! You just have to repeat singing songs many times and you'll do better eventually 😅 and confidence adds up some flare as well 😂

We Filipinos sing everywhere. Even in the bathroom while taking a shower, washing dishes, or doing the laundry. Babysitting, while cooking and doing other household chores, etc. It runs in our blood. Many of us Filipinos are talented without even having proper training. That's why in international contests, when Filipinos were asked if they had proper training and answered no, the judges usually got shocked. Many ordinary Filipinos can sing like pros, even better than those we idolize. I am not boasting; I am just stating some facts. 😊

I myself didn’t even know that I can sing . When I got here in America , with my 2 kids, who were 5 & 3 yrs old then, I got so lonely and homesick . I just started singing minus one before. Then, I realized then that I have the voice. . Now whenever I have a chance or time , when I’m tired , or even when I’m stressed out , I do live karaoke on face book for my friends or just to have fun. You don’t have to have a good voice , karaoke is used for fun like bdays. Singing is just normal for us in the Philippines .
