Marc Stephens I think he’s more so just encouraging Indy artists to learn more about the business before pursuing a deal with a major label. He’s had pretty considerable success as an Indy artist himself. There are a lot of artists who still have to tour and do shows just to eat while the label is still making a killing off of their masters. Imagine Lil Wayne and T Pain having KZbin channels and twitch streams in 2020 after their heyday in the 2000s......

@@jayg5650 I see and understand what he is doing. I agree that artist should do their own thing, but they are not getting a million dollar house, cars, jewelry, bitches, videos, concerts with big name artist, etc by being independent. I'm going by the title as well, "Why Labels Won’t Give Artists Their Publishing Back For 20 Years ". Because record labels give artist MILLIONS so the labels must make their money back...that's why it takes 20 years. I gave the example of a HOUSE. If you borrow $400,000 for a house that loan is for 30 years...and you don't own it until you pay it off. Most artist are clueless about money which is why they think labels are getting them...some do steal money. But if I blow up some dirty broke ass rapper into a mega superstar I want OWNERSHIP. People see MILLIONS but never count the EXPENSES. If I give you $5 million you do understand it comes with monthly payments right?? Labels take out LOANS to give artist...that come with monthly payments.

My personal opinion is that while "Jay" and "Diddy" may have "more money" than Sir Mix-A-Lot, Sir's money is HIS MONEY. I believe that Diddy and Jay are on the "industry's" payroll and if they ever step out of line with the "industry's AGENDA" all that money in J and D's bank accounts will "mysteriously disappear" in whatever media "scandal" the "industry" would use against them....JUST MY OPINION.

You’re explanation is vague. It’s really all about leverage. If you’re an independent artist with a buzz already and doing numbers, you can mold your contract to best suit you; to a certain extent I admit but if you don’t get what you want and how you want it, just don’t sign. I must also admit publishing companies have more connections than any independent artist. So it all depends on what you want or need as an artist and financially. There is a certain % of your publishing floating around that only they can access. No independent artist can get to that money because it involves getting into buildings and requesting it through industry relationships. Plus, record deals and publishing deals are two completely different things. You have to already have a significant amount of work released and doing good, streaming wise, to get an advance. Publishing deals (sony) actually tries to keep your publishing a lot longer than 20 years. More like, 70 years after you die. You just have to keep an eye out when reading your contract, because they try to sneak that shit in using penal codes from copyright laws instead of saying “WE KEEP YOUR SHIT PRETTY MUCH FOREVER” Publishing deals are often 30/70, 25/75 or 20/80. The bigger % going to the artist. It isn’t like a record deal where it’s the other way around because the label is putting a bunch of money to invest in the artist. When it comes to record deals, you gotta be smart too. There are many ways around them, you can mold them how you like if you got numbers, already. You gotta be a hustler. If a label comes to you it’s because they believe in you or it’s because you probably already have a buzz going on. The ball is in your court you just gotta know how to play it. I got one of my artists 1.2 million contract with one of the biggest if not the biggest record labels in the world. With NO advance and we gonna pocket 75% to 85% of of that 1.2 millie without owning the label a penny! That right, ZERO debts Without giving up our masters either and before we even put work out under them. Y’all gotta pay attention, read between the lines. If you got the numbers you got the leverage. I can’t elaborate much more on these subjects because it’s what I get paid for. 😉

Marc , I spent my whole life in the music biz both as an artist and as a record exec and you are correct. If artists want to own everything then do not take money and sell it. I did deals where the label had zero publishing but they did not pay the publishing advance. These so so called experts online know nothing about the real business. Any artist can not sign to a label but they then have to pay for everything out of their own pockets, they pay to make the record, they pay for promotion, they pay for publicity, they pay their own tour support... they own everything...BUT... what happens when their record does not make it? Most don't. They now have lost a lot of money or owe the bank a lot of money and the bank will take the collateral. If you were with a record company they paid all the expenses and lost the money, the artist walks away with no debt. These KZbin experts give bad information and the new artist then has false info.
