There is a mystery in his death and the estate owning thereafter. His case is no different than Prince. As soon as he died Warner Bros had access to what was not accessible before AND right Prince had a meeting with Warner Bros two days prior. So one can see how people come up with such ideas as the industry is killing these powerful artist...I'll even add that George Michaels only surviving sister died on the same exact as he did years later " supposedly" being his estate holder after his death. All three of these men challenged the majors in some form or fashion and died unexpectedly. Afterward each death something was gained by their demise.

Musicians only make 10-15% of record sale profit, and that's *after* the distribution costs are taken out. They abuse artists and encourage people like James Hetfield to make asses of themselves fighting to defend the 80-90% of revenue the label takes. Fifty years ago, before a musician could buy a whole studio at Guitar Center for $2000, and release a single in seconds on YT or SoundCloud, there might have been an argument that labels contribute something of value. But now they're just a bunch of... well you called it!

Michael Jackson became "WACKO JACKO" when he acquired the ATV Music Publishing Catalog. Lastly, let's be honest, these record labels did not put a gun to many of these black artist heads for their masters recordings. They willingly gave it to them. Many of these black artists doesn't look at dealing with these record labels as a business. Making sure that they can at least be able to reacquire their Masters and Publishing. A great example of this would be rapper Sir Mix A Lot and his biggest record Baby Got Back. Since he got back his masters and Publishing, he "EASILY" made over $200 million dollars off of Baby Got Back alone. Remember rapper Nicky Minaj remade Sir Mix A Lot's record named Anaconda

@phillipwalker42374 жыл бұрын
@@kristafurdixon8121 : Many of these artists were lazy and shortsighted. They didn't ensure that these record labels weren't lying to them or try to slip clauses in the contract that overwhelmingly favors the record label. They didn't have lawyers and accountants of their own to watch over their affairs. Many artists gave away big records because they either wanted an upfront large payout or even they didn't think the record wouldn't do anything. A good example would be rapper Warren G. He's still trying to get the masters to his greatest record Regulate. Regulate is one of Rap Musics greatest song ever made. Def Jam EASILY made over $100 million dollars off the song. Their parent company Universal Records made far more. Don't let start with Rappers Delight by the Sugar Hill Gang. You want a great example of intellectual negligence and shortsightedness look no further.

Sony was founded in 1946, that is 74 years ago, the number one money revenue source is games { Playstation } then music. Sony is a publicly-traded company that is worth 80 Billion dollars, there is no one person that has a controlling interest. If a global conglomerate agrees to sign you, again they are { investing } in your career. If they advance you xxxxx, and spent xxxxx to blow you up, the masters to that recording belongs to them unless in your contract it states that you have the rights to buy back that master recording in xxxx amount of years, or xxxx amount of dollars. In the streets, if the plug fronts you the work, do you own that work, do you own the cars, the jewelry, the homes, not until that plug is paid back, in fact, he will own that revenue stream until you find another plug. There are not too many multi-platinum recording artists that are known worldwide without the financing and huge promotion of a major label, they are the plug. Can you make millions without them { yes } but are you more concerned with being a star, or a working artist. This is the problem and the difference. Take an artist like Tech-9, been grinding independently for years, has a decent net-worth about 15 Million. He's good, he's not concerned with the glamour, the major publicity, the label rented mansions and Lamborghinis, are you ready to grind 24 hours-7 days a week to try to make it?. So to sum it up what is the value of your {ip }it is only worth what $$$$ it brings back to you and to your investors. The majors are an { F } machine, an assembly line, a bank, they invest, throw it against the wall, if it sticks, they put more $$$$ behind it, if not it has no value, they lost money for their shareholders.I've worked for many years for both, Majors & independent, majors suck, I'm an independent guy, but I respect the major's muscle and long-established roads they have created for independents to do their thing. So, make music, create your lane, make a living off of what you do, but understand, you don't wake up and say I'm going to slay the dragon, that creates the food from which I eat, without them, there is no Spotify, there is no, live nation, there are no concert venues to play live events, etc. Billion-dollar companies create billion-dollar opportunities, and the crumbs that fall off of those tables help you build your empire, it helps you fuel your other business interests, ask { Kanye, Jay-Z, Puffy, Dr.Dre } you don't have to join them, but you should understand how the games were created, being played, and will continue to grow, or die and re-invent it's-self as we currently know it.

Such a terrible analogy to equate it to the streets AT ALL!!!!! A plug in the street fronting you work, is nothing CLOSE to a label owning your masters. Imagine after your business is done with your plug and yall sever ties.......you either go find a different plug OR you stacked and saved enough to start your own operation.....but you STILL have to pay your ORIGINAL plug xxxx dollars for every bag you sell for the rest of your life- even tho yall aint in bed together anymore. He gets to eat off you PERPETUALLY, even after youve made him his money back 10x over.....is that fair?!?!? A label may put 3 million in to your first project- for an advance, budget, distribution, marketing, promotion, touring, etc......you drop an album and it goes platinum....youve already at least DOUBLED the money they put up for you in the first place. You get a couple of points and they keep majority of the revenue, residuals, royalties, etc. EVEN AFTER YOUR CONTRACT IS DONE, they still get to eat off of YOUR art for the rest of their lives. And dont let it be a 360 deal because then, youre REALLY fucked

I'm with ya 100% Dorian about this being the era of independent artists because of streaming and us not needing the labels anymore, but at the same time I don't feel sorry for artists that signed away their masters for a quick upfront signing bonus that they later had to pay back to the labels. Nobody forced them to make that deal and if they were too stupid to actually research what they were signing then they deserve to have all their money taken from them. The labels spend millions in promotion for their artists, without the labels those artists would have been just another unknown artists that never sold anything and never made any money at all. The labels really did make them who they are especially their image that was promoted to the masses so I see the label as having every right to keep those masters and the money because it's a business and musical ability means nothing when it comes to business. With that being said I would never sign to a label because they really don't care about any of their artists. Streaming has liberated us hallelujah!!

It's worse than they say. The extortion is blatant. They punished bands for going independent. The major labels colluded for years with music media and radio networks so that once a band had been signed by a major label, they can't go back, if they go independent they get buried no matter how big they were at the time. In the 1970s, one of the biggest artists was Frank Zappa, he was so popular that the song 'Smoke On The Water' mentions him by name, millions and millions of records sold. But at a certain point he acquired his own masters and went independent, so you never hear his songs on 'classic rock' radio, music publications wouldn't mention his name, if a new artist cited him as an influence or mentioned touring with him they'd edit it out because they wanted to erase his name from the public memory. So we hear 'classic' artists today that didn't sell a tenth of what Zappa did, but barely hear a word about Zappa unless you look for it. Then there was Janes Addiction. They were so huge, the first Lolapalooza was literally Jane's Addictions tour, they started it, their songs were everywhere from 1988-1992, they were a huge influence on every 'grunge' band in the 90s, but that influence was erased by music media for years, no airplay, no mention in the many 'best of the 90s' type articles. So back then, if you were on a major label and you managed to acquire your masters, they would just bury you, you wouldn't make the same amount of money the label would have because the songs wouldn't get any airplay. *The main problem we artist face, is the fact that the major labels have the 'distribution-reach' and access to the promo machine, that we (and the small independents) just don't have. They also have the $$ to inject initially upfront to break the artist into the comme3r4cial mainstream. So without them, it is next to impossible to go it alone, without getting into bed with the devil.*

Yep and they had something to do with his death. Shortly after MJ's death Sony reacquired the publishing MJ owed. They paid 750 million for it but MJ most likely would have never sold if he never died. They were responsible for the repeated child molestation charges as well.

To make matters worse, many of those record labels are irresponsible with the handling and safekeeping of the master tapes. Anyone recall that massive fire at Universal’s backlot back in ‘08? Thousands of masters perished.

I find it quite confusing as to why people have a problem with record labels owning master recordings. If I have a studio and I put together artists, pay them, pay for their lunch, their transport, give them a place to sleep and use my electricity, time, money to pay an engineer to record mix and master... I feel like I should be entitled to an income stream that the song will get. Taking people's publishing is just wrong unless it can be negotiated fairly... but the one who pays for the recording should own the recording. I mean?????? Artists are given session fees and a percentage of the neighbor rights... not to mention the fact that once the label has made you a household brand the amount of money you will receive from endorsements, movie appearances, club appearances, features etc. it doesn't make sense how people are going crazy over masters. Look at all these rich artists who don't own their own masters. Of course there are shady deals out here, but the whole masters conversation is getting a bit corny for me. Just because certain deals are shady doesn't mean the whole record business is all crooked. Of course these days the tools are available to be able to record and put your music infront of people independantly, but most indie artists just don't have the proper support whether financially or just a good team of people behind them. Fuck man... just put yourself in the shoes of a person responsible for discovering musical talent, grooming them, recording them and promoting their music to the world... you should be entitled to some ownership of something fam... give me a break!!!
@crnkmnky4 жыл бұрын
Should they be entitled to "some ownership," or _full_ ownership *in perpetuity?* And who really "paid" for the recording? They end up billing the artists for all of those recording and marketing expenses anyway.
@swish8-8324 жыл бұрын
@@crnkmnky I say "some ownership"... but even if it's most of the pie man. They recoup yes. But the artist is able to negotiate otherwise if they have sufficient leverage. The artist is given an advance sometimes and multiple income streams. I feel like the label needs to make their money back and some profit somehow, and owning the master is one of the best ways to secure proper income for the label. Another thing that confuses me about the whole "master's" conversation is that masters have become less valuable because of piracy having become so sophisticated, and recording having become more accessible which caused certain musical styles and sound alike songs to be created in mass. Now a song's uniqueness can easily be copied and ad agencies alike can pay less for music... this is why 360 deals were created, for the label to be able to at least get money from the other multiple income streams that they created for the artist by making them a household brand. Certain master's are also weak man lol... I always hear people say that they like the live version more than the studio recording. So why are "master's" so important these days????? What is it really about??? Especially coming from rich artists? It just sounds like ungratefulness to me. Entitlement. Or maybe I just don't know my worth, but this is why I choose to record my own music myself, and a lot of other people do it. But if you're going to go the route of owning your own master's... you better be able to exploit them as sufficiently as the label's would or at least at a rate where they can make you proper income... otherwise, give away your master's and get a marketing machine behind you so that you can live your dreams fellow musician. Peace.

You're kind of beating around the bush here. What is a factory worth without workers? What is a school worth without teachers? What is a bus worth without the bus driver? Labels are the factory, the school, the bus BUT THE ARTISTS are the workers, the teachers, the bus drivers. Its CO-dependency, CO CO CO. The whole debate is about labels making it to be a one sided dependency where the artist gets screwed so many times.

it's crazy how we don't place enough blame on those that sell or give away their masters. It's a cycle that starts with the artists or songwriters. They must understand the process and procedure of this music business & if not, they will get the negative end of the deal just as all other deals. Educate yourself, people & remove your feelings.

Bro as indie artists we have to build leverage and retain ownership! Just think once you’ve built your fan base your masters will be worth enough to sell to any major label for 100s of millions. Why work for the label when you can hustle them and play the game like they do?
