I come from 'Dutch East Indies', now Indonesia. I live in Batavia, now Jakarta. Before World War II, the official language in Indonesia was Dutch. The Dutch had colonized my country for about three hundreds and fifty years. My first acquintance with Dutch language occured very slowly around 1986, several months before I learnt my first foreign language, English. In Indonesia at that time, people learnt English in the first grade of Junior High School. I have learnt Dutch since 1987 without any teachers. I was thirteen years old at that time. I was entering junior high school. My father gave me his English dictionary. It was small and old. I was happy, but not very because I was scared I could not make it. My father was not very friendly to me when I got bad scores at any subject at school. Later, he gave me a popular dictionary. It was a very old small book that many parts of it were cracked. I opened that dictionary and saw beautiful and chic writings, which, I knew later, was Dutch. Those words were unique to my eyes. There was a pronunciation guide using Indonesian spelling, and not with phonetic symbols like I found in English dictionaries. The spelling of that foreign language was regular, which means that the spelling represents its pronunciation, just like Indonesian spelling, which later I knew it was made based on Dutch spelling. Then, I fell in love with Dutch language. I could not do anything. I just read the popular dictionary during my spare time. In my father's shelf I found my father's Javanese-Dutch old dictionary. I opened it and found many words which I also found in my father's German books, like "der, des, den". One day, it being several days before Eid-ul Fitr Day, some of my father's students came to my house. They brought a big basket in which there were gifts for Eid-ul Fitr Day. One of the gifts I found there was a tin of powdered chocolate drinks. I saw various texts written in various language on the tin, one of foreign language being Dutch. I was so happy and took good care of it well. The tin is still in my locker until today. My love for Dutch got more, but I could not do anything. My father did not like Dutch and Dutch people. I could not ask him questions about Dutch freely. Initially, I read German grammar books belonging to my father because I could not find books on Dutch in local bookshop and because I wanted to learn German, too. I really wanted to know why "der, des, den" could be found in Dutch books, too. My having done so, many years after that, I learnt why the Dutch call their country "Het koninkrijk der Nederlanden", why the church is named "Het huis des Heren", etc. BUT, books cannot say anything, and I was not satisfied. My father had a cassette. There was a beautiful oldie, which, my father said, it was sung in Dutch. It was "Sonja" (De Four Tak). I listened to the song again and again to recognize Dutch speech sounds. It sounds like German to my ears. Then, I found Radio Nederland, Deutsche Welle, BBC and VOA on shortwave. I had learnt foreign languages since. I listened in to those radio stations almost every day happily. I relied on my observant ears to recognize each speech sound of each language. Then, I tried to imitate all native speakers I heard from SW radio stations. Sometimes, my mother looked at me alone in my sleeping room, wondering why I talked to myself and might consider I was crazy. I made lists and notes in my books. I compared speech sounds of the three languages. I wondered why they looked alike. Sentences like "What is that? Wat is dat? Was ist das?" were my favourites. I did not know much about Germanic languages at that time. When I was nineteen years old in senior high school in 1993, I learnt that there were Germanic languages, with English, Dutch and German being their members. Now, I am almost fifty years old. My effort in learning foreign languages alone without any teachers becomes part of my past. It has no economical value. It does not give me any money. However, I was happy.

I am a refugee from Ukraine. It's quite difficult for me to percept the Dutch, especially when people speak quite fast. But I've just started to learn it more consistently, so I hope with practice it will go better for me. Thank you for your channel. It's an excellent opportunity to see how people speak in real life and what the traditions are in the Netherlands.

Dutch should be the easiest to learn for native English speakers, since that language is the closest to Dutch. Then comes indeed the German speakers. And after that Everyone that speaks one of the remaining Germanic languages. Although for everyone in the Germanic speaking world Dutch shouldn't be too hard. I know a Danish person that learned Dutch as a second language and you can't hear it, not even a bit. For German people on the other hand, no matter how hard they try, we will ALWAYS hear it.

@@bike-tyson-oak Thank for your explanation! What do you think is the reason that native Dutch speaker will always hear the difference between an danish who speaks dutch and an German with the same dutch level?😊 I was hoping to master the language as close as possible to C1 Level 😕
@bike-tyson-oak
@bike-tyson-oak Жыл бұрын
@Mrtn_hops_the_Atlantic first of all let me begin with saying that there's nothing wrong with hearing that someone is not native. Maybe the Danish person i know is just the exception. After all i only know one Danish person that speaks Dutch. On the other hand i know a lot of german people that speak Dutch. I live in Nijmegen, a popular city for students just 10km from the German border. But anyway, Germans have something in their pronunciation that they somehow just can't get rid of. It's like that stereotypical german accent you know from films. But why, i don't know.

im literally in the same boat as you but im from flanders. i've learnt a survivable amount and i still go to belgium with family alot but even then you will struggle. started off with duolingo but i recommend watching videos explaining the basic grammar and how the verbs change base on the tense because duo shows so its somewhat helpful it but it doesnt really say it does and its not really clear outside the past tense. after that you can only go up and you'll start to learn more words. if you practise everyday you'll make slow but noticeable progress. in my case learning is actually a plus becuase belgium is a wonderful and nostalgic place for me. i said alot but please do use youtube to search up the basics itll be much easier after that

Nederlands leren spreken en schrijven is best lastig als je niet in Nederland bent geboren. Begin met zoveel mogelijk Nederlandse woorden te leren. Kinderboeken lezen, TV kijken. Grammatica kun je ook leren via een docent Nederlands. Niet alleen via een (digitaal) boek. Maar 'face to face' in een groep met mensen, die óók Nederlands willen leren. Nederlands is een moeilijke taal maar wél een mooie taal.

@greenytaddict That highly depends on your taste. A few of my favorite movies are: Zwartboek (about WW2, partly in German), Soof (romantic comedy, partly in English), Bride flight (drama about 4 people moving to New Zealand in the 50's, partly in English), de tweeling (drama about WW2, partly in German), Michiel de Ruyter (history drama about a famous navy commander from the 1600's), Costa! (Feel good movie about a bunch of youngsters working and partying at the Spanish coast), Alle tijd (drama about a girl that gets cancer while she's pregnant from her ex or one-night-stand) and Ciské de Rat (drama from the 70's I think, about a boy that struggles behaving because he's been terrorized by his mom, I highly recommend this one, It's a dutch cult movie!) Oh btw, good luck finding them online, Dutch movies are a real nightmare to find online 😅😅

Reading does wonders. Of course, one should practice all aspects of language - speaking, listening, reading, and writing - and learn vocabulary. However, I found that when I began reading, I could understand listening better. I learned many real-life expressions from reading that I wouldn't have learned through listening alone, as many accents can be hard to understand. Once I knew these expressions, I could hear them better too. Reading also helped me tremendously with speaking, as I could use the newly found phrases and words. The same goes for writing. What I am trying to say is that I saw the most progress and many of my friends did too when we started reading. I know that starting with reading can be overwhelming, especially if you're reading books made for native speakers. That's why I joined Learning Through Stories, a startup that creates bilingual books with real-life vocabulary and phrases to help boost all aspects of a new language, all for the price of a cup of coffee. If you are interested go check it out on Kindle! www.amazon.com/s?i=digital-text&rh=p_27%3ALearning+Through+Stories&s=relevancerank&text=Learning+Through+Stories&ref=dp_byline_sr_ebooks_1

This frustrating phenomenon is reported by literally countless non-native speakers. The typical charitable interpretation is that native Dutch speakers are just trying to accommodate the speaker. This is of course bs since in a lot of cases it happens to people who are either fluent or not even remotely struggling to make themselves be understood. I think the real reason is a combination of the native Dutch speaker wanting to practice/show off their English and not wanting to waste their time by the non-native speaker potentially missing a nuance or something. It might be in the interest of the native Dutch speaker at that moment but it's pretty off putting and quite frankly a bit selfish. It's the opposite of accommodating.

I enjoy your episodes so much, Jeroen, Leon and the team! Thanks for such a qualitative content 😀🙏 Mijn grootste trots met mijn Nederlands was dat ik de hele tijd Nederlands praatte in het ziekenhuis toen ik met dochtertje was aan het bevallen 😁 en hoe ik sprak was helemaal niet ideaal maar niemand heeft naar Engels gewisseld zolang ik alles verstond en dat was helemaal lief van hen.

Almost no one speaks Dutch in St. Maarten and English is the common language - much to my regret. Sure, if you work for the government, Dutch is important. In Curacao and Aruba, dutch is very common. Anton Verhulst

Aside from just fun and doing it for the heck of it, there isn't really much reason to invest time and effort into learning a language spoken by relatively few people and without significant literary or scientific corpus to write home about.

Ah se fossem os holandeses no lugar de portugueses, quase 215 milhões de pessoas falando o idioma batavo na América do sul. Creio que o holandês ja foi uma lingua de importância mercantil no período das navegações, uma influência do holandes no português brasileiro é a saudação hoi, nosso oi, ao invés de olá, usado em Portugal.

My ancestors are from the Netherlands so I have always wanted to learn Dutch. I am currently using Duo Lingo, which I appreciate for the free content but also find it frustrating . They tell you when you are right or wrong but never explain why. I mainly want to understand and read the language, though I realize speaking it is important too. I also get quite confused with the word order of sentences. However, I will keep at it as I hope to visit Amsterdam some time this year.
