"The Legend of the Galactic Heroes" is about this question: Is it better to have an inefficient democracy or a benevolent autocrat? Because Reinhardt is a good and just leader. He truly wants to create a better world, and he actually makes his corner of the world a better place. But Yang argues that he still prefers democracy, with all of its flaws and problems, because it is a system in which people can actually be equals, and that's the only way people can truly be friends

The question is always: what if the good dictator dies? That's why i prefer democracy. It's flawed, slow but incremental and you can plan for the future even when a shit hits the fan. @JJE92a9 ай бұрын
The problem with Legend of the Galactic Heroes is that this dichotomy is just completely utterly unrealistic. If you look at history, the likelihood of having a benevolent autocrat is just absurdly small. Most autocrats cannot come into or stay in power if they are benevolent - they have to cater to their selectorate who help them stay in power, which breeds corruption, otherwise they will be replaced sooner or later by someone who is more ruthless. Dictatorial power reinforces corruption and malevolent behavior by rulers. Legend of the Galactic Heroes of course is far from alone in this portrayal, it has been commonplace in traditional political philosophy, with Aristoteles, Plato or Hobbes arguing slightly different versions of it. And of course in most classical fantasy series, the benevolent king is a commonplace figure. But these are mostly fairy tales. In reality, you generally either have the choice of having an autocracy - and overwhelming odds lean towards a ruthless, corrupt leader - or a democracy, which may be flawed in many ways, but at least there are ways to hold the leaders accountable. This naive portrayal of autocratic politics is something that really frustrated me with this show.
@onlywei8 ай бұрын
@@JJE92a the problem with “democracy” is that we don’t have direct democracy. We have “representative” democracy. We mostly vote for people, not for policies. This makes it easy for rich people, corporations, and even FOREIGN interests to figure out who to lobby. The US government enacts the policies that the lobbyists desire, not what the people desire. All other “democratic” governments enact policies in line with the U.S. lobbyists, not what their people desire. And it’s all held together by the fact that the people who can afford lobbyists can also afford to buy out the media. In the world we live in, the “checks and balances” built into the U.S. constitution are completely blind to the power of lobbyists.

I only read the first novel, but I don't recommend it. Tanaka's writing is not fit for novels - it is very, very straightforward, with no poetic language at all. The 1988-1997 anime fits the events together better (the narrative is more linear, whereas the novel will just have the narrator spoil that something will happen later for no real dramatic reason), and the "men sitting in rooms talking with each other" works better with talented actors, in my opinion.

Finally, the day is here when TT talks about Legend of the Galactic Heroes! To the newcomers of the franchise, welcome. The community might be elitist and the debate between the newer show vs the original OVA will never end, but that's just how things are. If you are wondering how to start watching the OVA, there are two movies (My Conquest is the Sea of Stars, Overture to a New War) and then you can go ahead to episode 3 of the OVA onwards to finish (Overture is the remake of Ep. 1 and 2). Afterwards, there are gaiden prequel series but I would recommend taking a break first before starting that. As for DNT (the re-adaptation that people tend to call the remake), you can just start on the first episode onwards. It's not done though.

I binged LOTGH back in the summer of 2014 during a particularly bad time, and then re-watched it the following summer in 2015. It remains, to this day, the most ambitious socio-political commentary ever attempted by an animated artwork. Out of the 90+ episodes of LOTGH, not a single one of them feels like filler, not even the episodes clearly designed to be such (the history documentaries, slice of life episodes of Reinhardt and his mistress, "I wish Kircheis was still here" episodes, etc..) all forwarded the plot in some way or provided the viewer with additional background to specific character motivations. One of the largest and impressive casts, in a time where budget constraints were VERY real, each character had defining traits and a singular unique flair to them which makes them recognizable in re-watches. Game of Thrones is the only popular westernized television series I can think of which has the same amount (initially) of ambition and trust in its audience to follow along, and that's just War of the Roses with Dragons. LOTGH is something far more ambitious, and it really, really nails the ending.
@NihongoWakannaiАй бұрын
Yeah, one of the greatest achievements is how it simply doesn't fumble its plot. Keeping a long, dense plot held together like that is a massive feat and really makes it feel so satisfying to watch it progress the whole way through. Well the reason why adventure/action shows get higher rankings is because anime fans tend to be more interested in genre fiction. If they weren’t, they would probably be watching crime epics or family dramas because there’s a lot of those in live action television and film. I think that many anime fans do like that stuff, but I am guessing that isn’t the majority. Like people won’t care if a show has incredible writing, if it doesn’t have high stakes, it cannot be an all time great. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is an amazing example where I would say a lot of drama films are on the level of that anime, but since it’s science fiction, a lot of people who aren’t exposed to that kind of stuff will be amazed by it. Of course Garnt would prefer the new one, he’s so recency biased. Also I personally haven’t seen either one, but I can tell that the original is better, but that’s probably because I tend to not be biased toward newer stuff and take things on their own merits.

The original is definitely better, but the remake is still very good, in fact, they both do compliment each other in one way or another. There are scenes that were better in the remake and scenes that were better in the original, and watching both makes me appreciate them more overall. As you said, I like how the original presents it as more of a “documentary” but I also do love how the remake makes it “cinematic and grand.”

DNT is absolutely worse in every possible metric basically, I can't even say it has better visuals considering the fucking atrocious character designs. I mean, just compare Yang's DNT version to the original OVA, for a good example, although Reinhard is also a good comparison. I guess the animation is technically more fluid, but that's not something that should matter too much in what is basically a political/pseudo-historical drama.
@supsup3358 ай бұрын
@@beetheimmortalI wouldn't word it with such hostility, but I do agree that I struggled to tell DNT characters apart from each other, as they tend to have similar faces.
@beetheimmortal8 ай бұрын
@@supsup335 I consider that a huge step down from the orginal where everyone had unique and recongizable faces. DNT just makes them into modern sameface anime characters. Consider Reinhard and Kircheis for example. In the original, while they shared some similarities, they also had entirely different facial structures and hairstyles, making them easily recongizable. In DMT, they literally took the same design and painted the hair differently. Hell, even Yang Wen-li, who's supposed to be over 10 years older than Reinhard, looks basically the same but with a different hair colour. And don't even get me starded on DNT's story, which cut out so much from the original. Even the OVA is guilty of that and of rushing some parts to some extent, but DNT is on a whole other level, which is somewhat understandable considering the shorter runtime, but it's still a downgrade. I'm not really hostile toward DNT (I really like the song "Binary Star" for example), I just find it very disappointing and I have the same problem with it as other remakes: the existence of a remake implies that the original is outdated and bad, and may make some people just outright ignore the original, which, in my opinion, would be a terrible choice.

I'm so glad Garnt finally talked about LOTGH remake. I've been waiting for him to bring it up for so long. It feels so undervalued for a such an amazing anime that's been airing right along our regular seasons. Sadly no one's talking about it aside from a cult following.

LOGH reminds me of Dune, it's very political and a lot of things happened that need a lot of attention to the smallest detail. and I love it because I just love to waste my time to over analyze what happened on a fictional world in a fictional story.

LOGH is something anitube should be talking about more often. It’s truly the high bar of grounded narrative in the medium, which is wild, considering it’s a sci-fi show of a speculative far flung future. Also, the scene mentioned at the end of this clip is the greatest two-character showdown in visual media. No violence. No winner. Only two good men who repeatedly survived impossible odds with different ideas of how to achieve peace, sitting down to respectfully see one another clearly. It’s a masterclass in how to write intelligent fiction without seeming pretentious about how intelligent it is.

You can feel the weight of every events and every desidions. You can actually see the references on a F*CKING Homer's Trojan Cycle and some couple of other myths and stories! This anime is incredible

If you just want to experience the story then watch the old version since it's actually finished, if you want to spend a few more years of your life waiting for a more faithful adaptation of the novels then watch and wait for the remake to finish. IMO both have their merits and you really can't go wrong with either
@talisa2229 ай бұрын
I think for anime fans who aren't used to that older character design, it would be good to watch DNT first as DNT is more "accessible" for modern anime fans who are more used to the sleek animations and modern style (the space battles also look cooler even if they sacrifice some detail and depth for sleekness). But the original story is still the best IMO. So hopefully the new anime can be a gateway to the old anime? If you end up liking the characters and the world, you can always go to the OVA and watch that. If you're fine with the OVA's meh animation and character design then you should go with that. Personally I find the OVA's designs charming, but I know people who only got into anime in the last few years disagree with me lol.
@blazstajcar93369 ай бұрын
@@talisa222 the OVA designs are more faithful to the military theme that's for sure. the remake makes it painfully clear that it's modern for better or worse and I can definitely agree that the OVA has more charm since I personally prefer the grit of 80's OVA, but as you pointed out the remake is more palatable for modern anime fans and if it can serve as a gateway to the classics it's certainly a good thing
@AnakinSkyobiliviator9 ай бұрын
It's up to your personal preference. The way I've seen it described is if the OVA was the historical account of the events, the remake/re-adaptation is a dramatized/action movie adaptation of those events. Like the history of WW2 and WW2 movies.

Haven't watched remake, but OG is amazing. It's just not something you will see made these days, it was considered a risk even back in the 80s, when just about anything and everything could get green lit if you were established in the industry with how the Japanese economy was. Book adaptations just don't exist anymore, it's all manga, LN (not real books, occasionally VNs, and maybe some OC every blue moon. There's just so much damn manga and so many LNs that already have legit followings that are so much safer. It's really a shame, because despite the volume of content these days, we're lucky to get ANYTHING that's even half original.

The remake of Legend of the Galactic Heroes is generally better in my opinion because it is more faithful to the original story. The original version, while definitely a great show, has enough issues with it that I prefer the remake. The most notable issue is the shear amount of filler in it. The only filler that I am willing to accept is in the first half of season 1 because most of the filler primes the audience for the second half. It really makes us root for Reinhard to win out over his enemies in the second half, meanwhile we the audience have some difficult political questions to answer ourselves regarding the Free Planet's Alliance in the second half because we are shown just how corrupt and ineffective the government is in the first half.
