I left the gray sky frozen dump state of Illinois for South West Florida and I love it. I got a direct hit from hurrican Ian just after we arrived. That was intense as we are very close to the shore. The area is recovering slowly and Im loving the sunny weather that doesn't cause daily depression. The ability to spend hours outside every day is real freedom compared to spending 6 months indoor every year.

SW Florida also here: As long as your above the age of 30 white don’t have kids and have money you’re good! The poverty and lack of education is stunningly obvious in these areas. But I’m glad you enjoy your walkies in the nice sunshine.

That used to be the plan for a lot of people. Florida got crazy lately. Home prices, property taxes, insurance costs have skyrocketed. It just isn't the bargain it was a few years ago. Oh, if your illegal and can work on a roofing crew you've got nothing to worry about. DeSantis isn't shipping you anywhere for now.

Enrich your soil slowly one small area at a time and start a tropical food forest. Here in central Louisiana we can grow a lot of various fruits and vegetables but many fruit trees are a challenge because of short freezes down in the single digits which seem to be happening more often. I planted nearly 20 fruit trees this year anyway. Hopefully we`ll get a break this winter to allow my trees to become established and strong.

One big problem is the hiring practices in the area, tied to the proliferation of military bases. There is stated hiring preference for veterans. The problem is, there are so many veterans, if you're not a veteran you're probably not getting hired. Salaries in general are remarkably low; I was told many times this is a result of military spouses being fine with a low wage b/c they're going to move in a few years, anyway. This keeps wages artificially low. With housing prices skyrocketing, living there isn't sustainable. I'm not dumping on the military or veterans, just stating experience and observation.

I MEAN literally though, veterans ARE legally entitled to special treatment as folks who sacrificed time and energy to the USA. Of course they're entitled, and they still don't get the compensation they often deserve through the VA.​@@b2b545

Also many with few medical ailments can claim for disabled veteran status and pay no property taxes at least in Texas forcing higher property taxes on everyone else and Texas doesn't reimburse communities with a lot of veterans enough for the exemption.

I moved from NJ to Birmingham, AL 35 years ago. I"m not much of a beach person and the quality of life is much better in central Alabama than on the coast. I visit the beach once or twice of year and get my beach fix. The economy in AL is very good. Home price have shot up a lot recently, but they are still less than in the NE.

I live in Huntsville and I agree with you. I'm a Gulf Shores regular. He threw me off at 4:35 when he said the Alabama Gulf Coast is in despair. It's actually thriving...

Many that move from the Northeast usually dont take to AL well and dont stay long, the die hard woke liberals dislike AL and most of the Deep South. Yes, home prices in AL have really gone up in the last few years as has everything else. Those looking for remote working and tech jobs in AL may be hard pressed. Those are mostly in Atlanta or other very large cities.

The Mississippi gulf coast is one of the best kept secrets and a great place to live. I've been down here for 20yrs and like it much better than my overpriced and overcrowded home of NJ. You can get a new 2,000 sq ft house down here for 350-450 grand. The same house in NJ will cost 550-700.

The region is more affordable on the whole, though the nicest cities really aren't (unless you compare them to places with substantially better opportunity).

@@JCVACCAROI grew up in Gautlier and agree with the other guy, the whole state is a backwards with majority residents having no to low education and poor opportunities. I left after 30 years living in the shithole state. Immediately made 2.5x my income moving to Florida and costs only went up 1.4x. You sound like the typical uneducated mass slumping there more and more into poverty.

You might wanna update your Florida cost of living implication. 2022 and 23 absolutely blew up the Tampa Bay area. Combined with inflation and insurance premiums rising, now it's one of the least affordable cities in the US.

It's gotten very expensive there, that was my point at the end. There are nice places, but they cost alot more.

I work in commercial real estate and we have some locations along the Gulf Coast. The insurance premiums are stupidly high, if you can even get coverage. And some of the buildings damaged or destroyed by hurricanes aren't being rebuilt. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues.

​​@@davidcox3076one major problem is that the politics of places like Florida make them really popular destinations for folks fleeing heavily Democrat areas, so whereas in the past, people would move to Florida and then leave after a hurricane or two, they are not leaving anymore. Not nearly enough, at least.

I sold my house in St Pete in 2009 for 160,000 It now worth over 400,000 and it not that nice of a house. I left for the great state of Washington and I did not look back.

I dont live far from the Gulf, an hour or so and If there is a hurricane or even a Tropical Storm in the Gulf, we get it too. Also, insurance is much higher in coastal communities as well as home prices, more HOA's too. That is why we are over an hour away not near the coast. South AL, the weather is hot and humid, there are more bugs, snakes and yes, we have gators in just about every fresh body of water. Essentially, South AL and MS is LA except further east.

Realistically, a lot of the people on the Gulf Coast will need to move in the next few decades. Fortunately the Great Plains, Midwest, and Appalachia are all reasonably close and well-positioned to absorb more people.

I’ve lived in Alabama all my life. Thankfully we bought our home in 92 and it’s paid for. On the coast rents and homes are almost impossible to afford. I have a daughter and several grandchildren that live there and you couldn’t pay me to live there. It’s so hot and you feel like you’re smothering from the heat and humidity. Once you get out of Birmingham it’s fairly safe. Birmingham used to be but they started electing democrats and it’s very dangerous now. Anyone that can have moved out of Birmingham. North Alabama is very conservative and I hope it stays that way

As an Albertan, I can relate. It's definitely related to extraction based economies and how these corporations make promises to towns of temporary economic gains but always leave communities with long-term pains.... The faster we all move beyond fossil-fuel based economics the better for everyone. Ironically enough the Alberta government collects FAR more revenue from gambling, cannabis and liquor sales than oil and gas revenues and is clearly a sustainable business yet ALGC (the crown corporation in charge of these vices) is never given equal footing when it comes to the economy in highlight reels or even political priorities despite employing more people and bringing in far more revenue to provincial coffers... I know, even after college I worked for them via a casino job and it probably paid similar to what I'd have made risking my life in Fort Mac and the tar sands... Meanwhile the oil and gas industry clean up bill for Alberta's abandoned existing non tar sands projects stands at nearly $60B and nobody in either major political party here wants to discuss that oily black elephant in the room...

It's just massively overshadowed by other states in the same region. If it had started with slightly better numbers, it would actually be in a pretty decent spot. As it stands now, it just needs a bit of time. The same can't be as easily said for Louisiana and Mississippi.

The time more people were moving to the Gulf Coast was also when climate change was increasing the severity/damage of natural storms. I can see by 2035, 2040 or 2050 Northern states getting increased population. People gotta choose to live more inland or have your home submerged by rising ocean levels. Some people could be friendly but backstabbers or friendly but liars behind your back.
