Once when I was a kid, I was pressured by a bunch of people at a wedding to participate in the bouquet catch because... I don't know. Apparently being 10 was "close enough" to a marrying age. 🤢 So then when I caught the bouquet, the women who had pressured me to participate were so angry - as in, they were angry-crying or acting really catty toward me. One of the women legitimately snapped at me by saying, "YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO ACTUALLY CATCH IT." I was an emotional kid and ended up apologizing profusely because I felt bad about how infuriated they were, even though I didn't understand why they were so mad. Now, at 26? I'm just baffled by that memory. Like, were those women okay...?
@katyscott875 жыл бұрын
Oh man, that sucks! I was sort of on the opposite end of that awhile ago when I was 22. My friend was a second-grade teacher, and several of her students attended, and they were very excited about getting to be in the bouquet toss. It was so weird that us young adults were outnumbered by 8 year olds, lol. Anyway, I ended up catching it simultaneously with a kid. She was excited, and I was "meh" about it, and I kinda thought she might've slightly beat me to it. I didn't want it, and she did, but everyone insisted that I should have it. I felt so awkward.

Lots of families include the women during the Milni now. Plus, no one I know in my family considers the dolhi the bride becoming apart of the grooms family anymore. Now it’s just considered like “you’re married. Time to go to the house you’re going to be living in to meet his family.” It’s not like a passing of ownership anymore. Things can have a poor origin but it’s also what you make of it. Plus, most brides genuinely cry when they are leaving the house because usually it’s the first time they are leaving home. If they aren’t that emotional they just keep their eyes downcast and lots of brides now-a-day’s simply just be happy they are married. I just felt like a needed to clear that up cuz I feel as if she was slightly misrepresenting it in today’s day and age. Don’t get me wrong though, so people do it that way but it’s not common and it’s just not seen that way anymore.

LILY'S ISN'T FREE: Had to return here to comment. Lilly, may be when you do away with make up and fake eyelashes you can complain about sexism. You use every bit of what women who are getting married do. Except you do it everyday. A new outfit everyday, make up, hair, fake eyelashes, lipstick....stop that first, and then may be talk about anything. Its just sad how wrong these are. (very aware that studios make you do much of this stuff, but sweetie, you are not that FREE, are you??????

Talk about an Arab tradition when groom's men will actually steal the bride and take her somewhere until she cries!!! I was at a wedding in the US that did this, bride wasn't crying but was visibly frustrated because she didn't expect this!!

In Brazil there are already some brides that walk down the aisle with both their parents. I've seen some walking with just their moms too. I 100% believe that if it's YOUR wedding, you're allowed to do whatever you want

This was very rightly put, that part of *doli* of forcing the bride to be sad while everyone watches has been awful.It doesn't matter how many weddings you attend, it still seems wrong.

Why is Lilly acting like these girls don’t wanna get married and be poked and prodded for hours and be placed in the middle of the room so everyone they asked to attend the wedding can say that it was beautiful? Almost every wedding I’ve been to, the bride and groom/bride and bride (I’ve yet to be asked to two men’s wedding, I’m hoping for you friends 🥰) are completely happy and content and actually want to look good. It is their day, not just the brides but both. They’re not signing their life away, yes weddings used to be really sexist but we live in the 21st century right now. Yeah, this happens in other countries, but she's talking about America and Canada??? Calm the hell down, Lilly. If you don’t wanna get married you don’t have to. How about caring about all of the bullshit laws that Trump and his team has passed taking away women’s and LGBT+ rights instead of being fake woke?!

I'm an Indian and I soooo understand the part of equality here. I wanted a quiet and peaceful simple family and friends kind of wedding. And my husband s family ended up inviting 500+ people. I ended up having a back ache 😭 and a frozen smiley emoji face forever 😂

I enjoyed this because it is relatable and funny for me. I really love you Lily and seeing you succeed is very motivating! The comments section needs some positivity because I’m getting tired of people drowning out all the fun comments and stories with their negative attitudes! I have to admit since the growth and increase in visibility that’s been garnered the amount of hate has been also increasing. A lot of hateful comments I never noticed before and it really disturbs me. We all have our own opinions and if you don’t find something funny that’s fine, maybe you don’t relate to it or whatever. However, you don’t need to be so unnecessarily mean. You personally didn’t find it funny, okay, move on. Some of us did, let us enjoy the comments section. All this negativity isn’t accomplishing anything and it’s discouraging. What do you gain by being a hater over something that isn’t hurting anyone. Anyways what I actually wanted to say was... yup I’ve been questioning a lot of wedding traditions since I was a child. Thankfully my mom never shut me down, but would engage in conversation about it. I could tell she found it amusing that I was observing all the traditions so critically rather than running around the wedding venue like most of the other kids. I’ve been to more Indian weddings and the thing that always hit me was how the wedding seemed least fun for the brides (not necessarily true in all cases) but I remember seeing a wedding photographer scold a dulhan telling her not to smile and it horrified me. I asked my mom why getting married is supposed to be such a sad thing for woman.. why is this normal that they aren’t supposed to be happy lol...at least things are changing and my cousins weddings have been quite different experiences.

Where do I get a teacher like her?! She's so goddamn amazing I feel like just sitting near her could make me awesome. #osmosis. Seriously though, she just makes me want to go out there and shout out to the world on loudspeaker to stop being so dumb and start questioning the reasons behind the traditions. I'm sure it's not necessary to cry at the end when you're just relieved that the circus is over. In fact, the tears could be from the relief more than from sadness. It's not like the parents sold the bride.......or not always like that.
