@@deebeautiful84 i believe so. I haven’t been on Discord in quite some time but this was probably 9 months ago. She went into how much she was earning, taxes, important Linux topics, government contracting, etc. Like so much information. It’s all in the messages if you scroll back. Now, you had to pay for Anton Daniel’s Patreon to get the Discord link ($15 a month) but they didn’t kick me out the Discord after I unsubscribed from the Patreon. So you might have to drop that $15 to get in there.

This was one of the best episodes of this segment that I’ve seen. I got my first job in tech as a Linux System Admin a month ago, I have my RHCSA and going for my RHCE cert in 2 weeks! Back in 2006 getting out the military and taking a CCNA class, I saw how no one wanted to share information. The gatekeeping was heavy. That’s how I gave up back then…shame. But I’m on it now.

you are correct they can doesnt mean they have to offer it. Samsung Electronics' annual revenue for 2023 was 259 trillion. They dont offer their engineers 100k to 700k in salary. It would be nothing to them but they dont offer that.

Loved this podcast. I've been following the Linux path as well, going for the CompTIA Linux+ and plan to get the RHCSA later. I have a non-tech degree though and can't afford to go back for another degree. Can I still break in with just the certs and some projects?

A certification or two can help you get an interview, but experience will get you the job. Learn the basics of computer hardware and troubleshooting and get a Help Desk role to get the experience.

Honestly, I can't afford a help desk salary with my current responsibilities. I was going for QA before I decided on the Linux route but may shift back to that if it's more financially feasible.

Aye! I had to stop watching so I could get someplace more quiet just to avoid missing a beat. My brother told me to learn Linux 15 years ago. Now I’m broke with 3 kids and he’s seemingly quietly wealthy getting that bread. It’s not too late though - I hope

Is helpdesk basically the same as customer support as in having to talk to customers on the phones?

Hmm it can be but doesnt necessarily have to be. For example, you could be customer support and never touch a command line and only up tickets or respond. Where with helpdesk it can be hands on. Quite as it is keep look at places like datacenter, godaddy, rackspace, or any hosting companies. They are always hiring.

This is dope! As someone trying to transition into the industry with a family of 4 amd I will like to hear from some folks who have families and how they navigated going to different places. Did they sacrifice and go alone or uproot their family? Do these companies pay for your entire fam to move housing and food?

In a bit of a dilemma choosing between non technical GRC or technical, The one thing changing my mind towards now technical is i do not want to be live ops or on call and having to be constantly worried all the time or me or somebody fixing one thing and it breaks 3 other things and now you gotta come in to fix on be on call, also the stress of always competing and always having to know everything at all times and the latest new hack or exploit or new tool or update.
