@emma_lou_z: Well, there are a few important and potentially conflicting factors at play when it comes to this issue. One point is that your experience of your appearance is pretty different from other people's experience of it. With your own appearance you need to imagine how you look at any given moment to get a sense of it, whereas other people are actually seeing your appearance visually. So if you fully isolate your sense of appearance from other people, it sort of takes away some of the point of appearance perhaps? I mean, we have inside features that only we have direct access to (so in a way kind of the opposite of visual appearance since when we are with others only others can see most of our features rather than us (we can't look at most of our own face unless we have a mirror)), but appearance is the thing that we put out there that others actually can see. We can always have the inner dialogue with ourselves about any feature of us including appearance, but we can already get kind of experience that through our own thoughts about anything, so looking at appearance as just something to imagine about without regard to other people seems kind of redundant. So I guess, to make appearance only for you may risk closing down one of your only ways of non-verbal communication and presentation, even though such ways can make things good both for others and ourselves in many situations. But I think that you can still feel somewhat free with your looks even if you are still considering other people with your looks. For example, when you decide to look a certain way, you can think of it as, you are communicating to other people that you think the look you chose makes sense or reflects yourself well. So like, even if, say, 80% of people prefer the look of short hair on men, what a man (and I am one of these long-haired men by the way) can present by having long hair anyway, is that he is showing other people, when they look at him, that he looked at his own hair, and found a certain amount of beauty in it, and I think that's a decent thing to communicate to people. And perhaps people can respect that and be intrigued by that even if visually they would imagine a man with my features but with short hair instead to look more appealing to them. But in that sense it's still for not just me, but for others, because I am still trying to use my appearance to communicate, and to give people things to pick up on about me, there is still that interactivity. I still don't feel separate from other people when it comes to my appearance. I don't think the point of appearance should be about control of anything in particular, whether it's a person feeling controlled by others or a person feeling like they are taking control, it's just, how exactly do you want to communicate. And I think that trying to satisfy traditional senses of people or showing people an alternative approach are both valid ways to communicate that have pros and cons, and it's up to the individual what method makes sense for them. And of course it can vary by situation -- that's why people feel like they are in a mood for a certain style one day, and another day want to do something different. So in short, I think inevitably, it's not about just yourself or others, I think it's about both to some degree. I don't think a person can or really should separate appearance from their own self-perception, I think you will inevitably make self-assessments and will want to imagine how you look to other people and reflect on what that means to you. And I also don't think that generally people can or should separate from their appearance from the fact that it's communicating to other people, even interacting with other people passively. We all want to connect with other people in one way or another -- even if that connection is simply "I want to look different and I don't care if you don't like it" -- that's still a connection you are creating with people through your appearance, and something to be considered when choosing your appearance -- it's just of a different flavor from trying to fit into traditional styles. Both approaches can be very appealing if executed well. I just don't want people to forget the inherent social element of appearance -- even if you dress up and don't go outside, you are still thinking about hypothetically, what WOULD people think if they saw this, and being happy about it, or laughing about it, whatever. And I don't think that fact means that you can't feel free with yourself. People will react to anything we do, appearance or otherwise, but it's up to us to decide what to do with that, do we want to embrace it, challenge it, make fun of it, etc. It's a flexible method of communication and social connection.

not sure if anyone else has already commented this but Lisa you're such a good story teller. The way you oscillate between telling us your mental state and what was going on around you feels like i'm watching a movie. One minute I'm in your head and feeling this turmoil and then the next "scene" you're on the plane.... back into the mind, thoughts of joy and confidence and liberation, *cuts to* you standing in line at Target... at peace.. I think that's what makes your message so much stronger, besides the fact that it is relatable to the human experience and resonates with so many people, but also that you are so good at oration, so it comes across really well. I know there's also the editing etc. but you're also really good on the podcast with your sister spotlight episodes so I know this is a skill you possess just naturally :D

I mean this in the nicest way, no shade to you at all. No one should technically judge anyone else bc that’s not their right to do so. I'm so sorry that you got bullied! Bald heads can look absolutely amazing. (I have a buzz cut right now, so speaking from experience.) There's a lot wrong with those bullies, though. That shouldn't have happened to you. I'm glad you have good friends.

When I first saw one of their videos she immediately stood out. She looked so confident and free spirited. Because I have low self Esteem she was my favorite right away. The way she sang just gave me confidence and to hear this from her is shocking. I just took one look at her and the first thing I saw was a beautiful confident woman. I just want to say you are a beautiful positive woman. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I honestly feel like short Hair Lisa and long hair Lisa are two different people
@Iivinginfiction4 жыл бұрын
yeah bc when she had long hair she was extremely insecure, not aware of her self worth yet and depended a lot on her appearance for self reassurance but ever since she cut off all her inches she realized her own self worth slowly and surely, gained control back from the life she was taking a backseat to before and started to focus on bettering her personal qualities and growing from that. insecurity really makes you a different person but so does confidence

As many comments say she does look gorgeous and beautiful however she looks but the thing I that I like is her personality growing stronger and more confident to do a risky and bold decision and defying society’s expectations. This truly inspiring so thank you.

I remember when Lisa cut off her hair for the first time, I was honestly really worried. I totally support her doing whatever she wants with her own hair or body, and I think she's amazing regardless of her appearance, but it was such a dramatic change that it really felt to me like she wasn't in a good headspace. I wish I wasn't right, but I'm so glad that she's found so much liberation and support and self-worth. She absolutely is enough, and she always was. She is kind and smart and funny and talented and hardworking and so much more than just her appearance. All the love

Wow what a women/self impowering video!! Thank you for sharing this personal experience. I think you are going to help a lot of girls and women (including me) with this. We compare ourselves way too much to other people and care too much about what they think about us. It's great to be reminded, that I am not the only one who is struggling with this, and to hear other perspectives and stories. Thanks Lisa!

You are so beautiful! Hair or no hair!! I really identify with your story. Brought me to tears at one point. I know there are so many young women that need to hear this. Having self awareness and the willingness to look at what drives us to the decisions we make is very difficult. I applaud your courage and your honesty 🤗. Too many of us are unhealthily focused on how we believe others see us. This is too inspiring and a lot of mind bogging takeaways for my own self reflect. I have been wanting to shave my head ever since I was young too!! I am now 28. After a breakup this year with my first and only relationship with my ex girlfriend/bestfriend of 15 years...it has made me thinking of doing it. I definitely want to film it too. Can't believe Lisa was that insecure...cos you were always SO BEAUTIFUL in my eyes. Like talented and beautiful with long hair or without long hair. Thank you for sharing this story.

Thank you for being so honest girl! You hit on so many things that are not usually talk about in an age of social media and image management. You’re definitely not the only girl who has struggled with this but I’m so glad you are sharing your story. I think it’s so awesome all of the ways that we can style our hair and all aspects of our appearance, but we can’t let it consume our lives or define our identities. We are fearfully and wonderfully made by God for more than to be pleasing and pretty. Our beauty goes deeper than that. Blessings✨☮️✝️💟

I’m guessing she wasn’t in a good place emotionally and she had at least a boyfriend who treated her like she was nothing. She tore herself down and got depressed and decided something needed to change so she cut all her hair off and kinda tried to start over or start a better life. Lisa I love you and you mean a lot to me. lisa is absolutely gorgeous. she can rock any hair style and color. but it’s not just her appearance, i mean, she‘s kind, smart, funny, and most of all REALLY talented. she does what she wants and she doesn’t care about what people will think. i love her and she inspires me so much. i might shave my head when i’m a teen or an adult. to every girl that wants to do something but is worried about what people will think about you, if you really want to do it then go ahead, do what YOU want to do because just like Lisa said, you are your own woman and if people start hating on you then just ignore them. keep your heads up, you’re dropping your crowns. we are all QUEENS!👸🏿👸🏾👸🏽👸🏼👸🏻👑

Honey, I am a 68 yo woman and I came across your pink pixie video because I wear a pixie and I look at videos all of the time. Well, I then looked up your page and found this video and you are so wise and I commend you for finding your self- confidence. All of my life I tried to be the pretty girl with the long hair and I did it for men mainly and women too! I have lived an exhausting life of trying to please others and finally this year I stopped. I cut my hair off, stopped starving myself and I’m even going to let my gray hair come in because it’s for me! You have inspired me even more......please do not change and yes, you are beautiful on the outside no matter what you do to yourself but your inside is beyond gorgeous......YOU ARE SUPER FABULOUS JUST BEING YOU AND LOVING YOURSELF! Thank you young lady for giving an old lady a good kick in the butt of motivation and inspiration.❤️❤️❤️
