I mean regen cores and wish passers are generally the way to go if that's what you want, but honestly back when I used that to climb ladder it played more like balance in this tier (I also only play balance pretty much though, Hyper Offense is too risky for me personally and stall is... stall). Regen cores are definitely a thing of the past though, they might come back with foo but idk Neutralizing Gas Koffing and trappers like Shadow Tag Gothita kind of ruin most of them now.

It's not just the high base power that makes defense weaker, it's the way stats scale. Damage is proportional to attacker's attack divided by defender's defense, so if both pokemon's levels and by extention stats are doubled, the damage will remain the same but since the hp stat was doubled the attack will deal half damage as much percentage wise. This also applies to base stats, evs, and IVs, proportional increases to all stats will result in less damage (blank sets used, ditto flamethrower on ditto does 27% minimum while mew flamethrower on mew does 19% minimum). That's also why gens 1 and 2 are much more stall oriented, since all evs are maxed as opposed to attack needing 252 evs while full bulk is 504.

A strat I've seen used against setup mons was prankster encore. For example, Shellder switches in, I switch out my mon on his shell smash, the mon I switch into has prankster encore which forces Shellder to spam shell smash for the foreseeable future. On top of that, I've seen phasing moves like dragon tail and haze teched on some mons as well. It's just that prankster encore is for those moments when a setup mon is swapped in on a mon that doesn't have a phasing move. I get that it's annoying, but it's something.

Yeah I've tried that and it's not bad, but I don't love it. Just feels sort of awkward slotting in those not great mons for that specific reason, but mons like shroodle encore can certainly be good.

​@@LemonLittleCupI don't play pokemon but I am interested in card games. And one thing that I realised is that tech cards, or tech moveslots/mons are almost never worth it. Because sure, I can include a card that can help me win a specific matchup. But in reality that almost never happens. I may end up not drawing that card when I need it and I may draw it when it's not helpful in other matchups. Drawing is not an issue in pokemon but having a suboptimal mon in some matchups certainly is. I think I'd rather have a good mon that synergyses well with my team and helps me with my gameplan than a mon that is suboptimal in most situations and may only increase my winrate in unfavored matchups a little.

hi im an lc player like you (eric on smogon) and id like to give my two cents. i think setup in lc is not as crazy as you think because eviolite gives us counterplay to it almost by itself. it is true that lc mons hit way harder than ou mons, but it is also true that usually lc mons dont die in one hit. you can usually just check the opposing +2 numel/shellder/you name it with just your full health vull/foo. this depends on gamestate obviously, but its a resource youll always have if you plan your games well, coupled with priority (timburr mach punch, corphish aqua jet, foo fake out and even nymble first impression). defensive teras also help, as they are a one time resist to a move you might need to check. but, to me, the most important part is positioning. if i dont give the opposing np vull even a chance to set up, its never winning. planning your games out in a way you wont lose is super important and will give you the edge in most battles

Yeah positioning and planning ahead is 100% a huge factor in LC, but even just one error sometimes and you lose to a sweeper. Certainly a fast and crazy metagame and that's why I love it.

As someone who played Smogon tiers most in Gen 4 & 5, it is WILD to hear priority in LC is bad… in DPP where LC community was born, with the most aggressive singles tier ever b/c no Eviolite it’s like “Quick Attack - the Tier,” with like everything using priority even without STAB. Again, no Eviolite probably a big part of that though

Having played gen 2 competitive a bit, that sounds pretty similar to priority in that gen Before gen 3, you could max out every single one of your stats with EV's. So compared to most gens, almost every pokemon is bulky Which means that the current priority moves (Quick Attack and Extreme Speed) didn't mean much since they didn't do enough damage. Even with the presence of the newly introduced Belly Drum.

I just made it in like 2 minutes but I think Poliwag's got potential. I'm not a huge fan of belly drum, but maybe if paired with gothita to remove voltorb (probably the only mon outspeeding it) and any priority mons, then I could see it working. In rain is another option, but that feels like a ton of work. You'd defiantly need to build a team around it so it seems quite constricting but I can totally see it working. I'll try to make a team and maybe reply to this comment whenever I do (probably gonna be 2 or 3 days I'm pretty busy)

I somehow partially succeeded in using a stall team in LC, but I end up making fast progress with corrosion Salandit either way lol. Statuses are more annoying against my LC stall team than most people think, I rely too much on natural cure Swablu or magic bounce hattena, these are the best options or using a useless happiny with heal bell who dies to everything. And yes, I enjoy it just because Swablu is the GOAT. Also, if someone wants to try making a LC Stall team, a prankster mon is mandatory.

Like an LC UU? Lc UU exists but I don't think you can play it on ladder, only custom games (I think.) I'd love to see a metagame where more of the niche picks are meta, but I feel like LC already has low enough users to where too few people would play Lc UU. Still, it'd be nice to see.

Its a shame that stall doesn’t work. I don’t run full stall teams because I find the 50-turns-no-progress really boring but I think having defensive mons to pivot around gives me a lot of freedom. If someone shell smashes in OU, I can just haze or go an unaware mon and force it to switch.

i feel like LC is the most enjoyable tier in most gens or one of them, because even though the pool of top quality LC mons isnt the same as the entire tiers pool of pokemon theres still a ton of room for making things work that OU and UU typically just do not have. take sweepers and unaware for instance, SV has 2 Unaware mons in LC, and 5 in OU. but in SM LC had 4 to the 2 mons of OU, SS which came before SS only really had Clef and Quag, the LC of SS would have had more options for the problem just because quirky one note mons that didnt evolve into a high base monster suddenly can "somewhat" carve a role for themselves in some capacity the power level difference isnt nearly as pronounced, so LC feels much more enjoyable in the teambuilding stage with much more impact from Typing, Movepool, and Abilities then just the raw stats of mons Azu for instance is still pure unmitigated garbage, but Huge Power even with just its base 20 Atk. puts it over Mudbray with a Base 100 Atk. 12/24 vs 20 if they both invested in Atk. theres so many mons that even though theyre not amazing in the tier, theyre far more playable then their respective evolution would be in a more standard tier

Hey lemon, me and some friends were theory crafting a pokemon with the most immunities possible And it turned out there's only a single pokemon that can reach 6 immunities, and it's from little cup. So, idk if you'd wanna use this strategy, but if you do it's this. You need an Azurill with Sap Sipper, give it an Air Balloon. With the Tera Type Ghost. This will make it immunity to Dragon, Ghost, Ground, and Grass. If needed, you can trade your Dragon, Ghost, Ground Grass immunities for a Normal, Fighting, Ground, Grass immunity via terastalization. What do you think? Would this work for little cup? We never intended it to be a Little Cup Strategy, but since Azurill is the only non ghost type that has an ability that gives it an immunity, and it's two typings both have immunities, it's literally the only possible pokemon for the strategy.

Having the most immunities possible is great but doesn't make a Pokémon the most powerful in a metagame or not even a powerful on for that matter. Shedinja is technically the Pokémon with the most immunities in the game thanks to Wonder Guard and it gets one-shot by any form of hazards, poison, burn, Rocky Helmet, Leech Seed, Sand it's typing is atrocious with many weaknesses and it has low stats. Now how does it relate to Azurill ? Well it has atrocious stats, even for LC and its movepool is quite restricted and without Eviolite there's no way Azurill would tank powerful hits. Oh yeah that's what I meant. Not being a water type sucks because it doesn't have STAB aqua jett. I tried earlier in the gen with Tera Water to mixed success but I'm yet to trey post DLC

I used to play LC along with NU and PU back in gen 6. Stopped playing in gen 7 tried getting back in gen 8, quite liked how rediculous LC was at the start of that gen, never went back after that. Did play BDSP RU which I really liked and I also tried gen 9 RU which was fine. Perhaps I need to give LC another shot this gen. I even participated in a LC draft league back in gen 6 had drafted Ponyta/Carvannah/Cottonee/Onix/Blitzle/Croagunk/Duskull/Trubbish/Baltoy. I remember all the good ghost types and spinners were sniped hence the Duskull and Baltoy picks. Didnt get too far from what I remember

I stopped playing on showdown a while ago when my laptop broke and I lost all the teams I had made for years I always found LC to be pretty fun, but your point about the OP moves seems to have gotten way worse

Yeah, too many unevolved mons get crazy moves. Just look at how many mons get earthquake or close combat. It's pretty crazy TBH

I'm gonna be honest, I haven't played Little Cup since like gen 6, but not because I don't like the tier. It's enjoyable, just not my style. I haven't even played base OU in a long while either. I always just wait for pokebilities to return and give me my content farm

I’m not sure if there being a lot of priority in OU really helps with setup sweepers that much. Of all the examples you listed only Kingambit and Dragonite are OU, and Iron Valient quad resists Sucker Punch.

Yeah, but it's not crazy to see any of them in OU. They're all at least okay options unlike in LC where half of the priority mons are near unusable. I see what you mean though, not to mention priority doesnt help against DD Dragonite Extreme speed.

It's nice, as a LC aficionado, to see a new video that helps people get into this fascinating format (I say that even though I barely even played Gen 9 LC since launch, legitimately one of my least favorite gens of LC, a real shame because I loved Gen 8 LC. Granted, that applies to gen 9 in general for me but I digress). Kudos to your explanations, I really liked that video

I genuinely cannot believe it. I was sorta done with YT as I only had 34 subs and was getting 200-300 views on a good day and my content was pretty low effort and bad tbh.
