You are missing out if you don’t use a heavy (1oz) blade bait in mid summer as a high speed crank bait when bass and walleye are hanging out 20 to 30 foot deep. I caught 2 of my 3 biggest bass, lots of striped and my biggest walleye of this year using this method. It gets deep very fast and the high speed retrieve creates the vibration to elicit a reaction bite with sluggish fish. Just my 2 cents. It has worked great for me. The guy at the bait shop was laughing behind my back when I told him how I was fishing these…that’s ok. I have the pictures to prove its success. Don’t be afraid to try something different…even if you get laughed at.

I have caught hundreds of bass and walleye on blade baits, color can be important as well as the weight of the baits, also the size of the baits. Some other things to think about is the drop rate, which can be adjusted by your line size. Also let the fish tell you how they want the bait jerked off the bottom each day. If you are getting short strikes add some scent, I use scent all the time, and yes it works on a blade bait.

Vertical Jigging 101: 1) Get a ½,¾,or1oz Chrome Crippled Herring, ¼,½,or¾oz Chrome Silver Buddy, or ¼,or½oz Hammered Chrome Little George. 2)Find the bait-optimally on some kind of hard, vertical drop on a main lake (or creek) or river point, in current. 3)Drop lure straight down onto structure and lift. Repeat.

Blade bait is outstanding in cold water. If you have to many snag problems they sell hook that doesn't have the front barb replace the front treble. Our use Cicadas that's what we use. You can use braid with at least 12 pd floro leader. When you cast the blade can flip over your braid. Use a barrel swivel to prevent line twist. It's a killer all winter and spring. Don't be afraid to use it.

Blade baits will work in off colored water as well. Just as in fishing other types of lures in off colored water you can get colors that show up well in stained water. Another thing about these blade baits is that they do vibrate which is a big plus in stained water.

How about just spending time on the water with one and figuring out what works for you? Someone can tell you 15 different “secret” ways to fish a bait……..and yeah some might be helpful--but in the end, they are only as good as the time you put in. Look up a few ways to fish something, and then get out and experiment with it. You gotta find out what works for you, with your gear, and your style, etc. If there was a tourney are you gonna track down a local and find out exactly what bait to use, the depth to fish at, where to fish it, and how to retrieve?? No, because you not allowed to in most tourneys--put the time in and figure it out. In my experience, most ways someone says to catch fish don’t work well for me or on my lakes anyways. I gotta find my own cadences and variables; no retrieve is always going to work. Theres a million variables that play into how a fish wants a bait on a certain day. And the only way to even remotely start understanding it is put time in on the water. Pick a bait or technique you aren’t that confident in or never caught a fish; tie it on and only use it all day or for several days. You’ll be amazed what you figure out on your own. You’re your best teacher.

Billy Westmoreland, a local hero here on Dale Hollow, brought the Silver Buddy to it’s fame with his success in the early days of BASS. I knew Billy and his brother Bobby well. The Westmorelands are a fine, prominent family in Clay County Tennessee. Billy made his own line of bass boats in the 70’s, and a couple are still moored and used on Dale Hollow today. Stan Sloan praised him as “The Smallmouth Guru”.

Randy I hear you talk a lot about conservation and fisheries issues. I live in southwest Georgia. I fish from west point lake down to lake eufaula and the lakes in between the two. Our lakes are stocked with stripers. The old guys say 8lb plus bass used to be fairly common before they stocked stripers. They tell me big striper out compete big bass for the same forage. This has decimated the big bass population. Are you familiar with this issue? How can we stop this lunacy?

Thank you for the info. I'll give it a try in my local ponds for some winter bass. I do have one question, which I'd like to ask you to clarify. Do you modify the blade bait at all before bottom jigging it (especially like you said around timber)? I have tried this technique with no success last winter, however the main issue I had was the fact that trebles keep snagging hard on the bottom and I end up loosing a fair bit of these baits. I personally have decided to snap off 1 side of the treble and see how that goes. I'm curious about your opinion on this.
