From Ryanair to Southwest Airlines, low-cost carriers across the globe love the Boeing 737. It’s not uncommon to see the type being the sole aircraft in the fleet of these operators. Boeing’s VP of commercial marketing, Darren Hulst, spoke with Simple Flying about why the aircraft has been a favorite among LCCs across the globe.

Unfortunately, they were recently retired and replaced by 737-700s. A few other Canadian carriers still use the 737-200 though, mainly due the usefulness of the gravel kit.

It's kind of simple, the 737 has lower seat mile costs, which if you're a LLC and every penny counts matters. Still there are alot of LLCs using A320 family that make it work. Also history has alot to due with, fleet consistency is important for LLCs so if you traditionally use Airbus or Boeing you'll like stay loyal, a new brand just introduces operational and transitional expenses.

That's what I was about to say! In countries where there are a lot of market for the 737 (mainly due to historic presence) is therefore logical to choose that. But the 320 works perfect for a lot of airlines (in Latin/South America is very very strong, apart from Spirit, EasyJet or so to mention some). Not to mention the business among countries economics, USA will push some to buy boeing's instead of Europeans.

Your misconception is that airlines install the same seats on such flights, if that was true we’d see widebodies with a dense narrowbody-like configuration. That’s however not the case since most full service carriers tend to install seats with more leg room on their long haul narrowbodies. TAP for example installs the same seats on their A321LR as they do on their A330-900, so when seated you won’t notice a difference except the fuselage width off course

You do not really answer the question. 737s are older than a320s. More accurately put, when low cost carriers first began to realize they can maximize profit by having a fleet of the same medium-range aircraft, the Airbus a320 was still too new to have huge numbers of older used planes available for easy and affordable purchase. Therefore made more sense to go with the 737. Now, when these aircraft are being replaced, airlines are saving all of the numbers you mentioned in fuel and efficiency, but the same would have been true had airlines started with the 320. If Airbus had been making the 320 series in the late '70s and early to mid '80s, it's fair to say that more of these low-cost airlines would be utilizing those planes...

The 737 was the first small jet airliner that you could load pax, bag and fuel to max. Set the trim at 5,5 and flaps at 5 and take off! An ATR pilot asked me why BU (Braathens S.A.F.E. Of Norway, 1946-2005) did not fly the ATR on short routes in southern Norway. My answer was that when the 737 landed it could take off again in less than 1h and fly non stop to the Canary Islands. That is a 5,5h flight. No ATR can do that. That is why we love the 737! No job is to little, no job is to big. Lol! In 1972 they almost shut down the production. Thanks to SN and USAF that in total ordred 35-40 aircraft. That made the program for Boeing. Back then I think they made about 6-7 737s pr month. What was it before Covid? 50+? That is an insane no. of aircraft! I am not going if it it is not Boeing!

The article is misleading. LCCs use only one type of aircraft whether it be an A320 or a B737. This is for more efficient operations. A more useful comparison would be which one is more efficient, but that will be a harder task.

Turkish LCC Pegasus Airlines had Boeing-only fleet, consisting of B737-800 NGs. But in December 2012 they ordered 100 A320/A321 NEOs. After this decision to switch to Airbus fleet they leased some A320 CEOs. Since then leased Boeings gradually have left the fleet. Now Boeings constitute about 1/3 of the fleet. It was a wise decision to switch to Airbus. Note that European big 3 legacy airline groups haven't ordered any MAX aircraft yet.

That all has to do with how crews and so on are scheduled, there isn’t really one reason. My home airports sees the A321, A321neo, A330 (-200 and -300), 737-800 and MAX 8 and 9 of TK. Have to say, as a normal User of LCC in Europe, I always prefer to travel on Easyjet. Their interiors are more pleasing to the eye and, dare I say it, the A320 is more quiet and comfortable. But Ryanair is always cheaper so 🤷🏻‍♂️

As for me, I don’t usually fly LC Airlines. Maybe that’s because of luggage I take with me always. I live in Russia and the only LC I fly is Pobeda and it‘s below-average experience. I prefer flying with Aeroflot, because it has convenient layovers and airport facilities. In Europe I usually buy EasyJet tickets. It’s amazing in terms of service, so rare with LCC. And in the US JetBlue is my love😍

the only thing i care is that there should be ac power available at every seat! That should be standard nowaday! which a lot of the legacy US carriers have now made availl with the latest refit even for economy and are standard on the MAX. I am also hoping for free wifi but only jetblue is doing that. Don't really care about the fancy screen on the backseat. it is nice to see the flight map once a while but i would rather have a usb power plug in the back of the seat.

The new 737 in perhaps 10 year might depart from the boeing philosophy of being hands on and introduce much more automation. Then, I think they will improve handling, by rasing the landing gear and reverting that hack with mcas. And using composites 100%

The MAX has a slight advantage in fuel efficiency and capacity especially in the A320NEO/MAX 8 size that is popular with LCC's, which is why the 737-800 and MAX 8 has consistently outsold the A320 and A320NEO. However, the A321NEO is a totally different story and Boeing is still playing catch up with the MAX 9 and 10.

Nr. 1 reason LLC's loves the 737 over the A320 is the available air stairs. Ryan air for example flies to a lot of airports without gates and jet bridges. At those airports they would have to pay big money to ground handlers for using their stairs. Ryan air just pops out the 737s onboard air stairs and saves big time!

My only recent experience of a Low Cost Carrier was with Jet2 on one of their 737-800s. While I still prefer the A320s cabin, the Jet2 experience was far better than I was expecting and I would use them again without hesitation. I was looking at the seat plans on a seating website, and according to them Both Ryanair and Jet2 offer the same standard seat pitch. However Ryanair offer a couple of inches more in their premium offering. As both have the same number of seats (189), how is this possible? I can only think that Ryanair have reduced some of their standard seat pitch enough to still be able to claim 30 inches when rounded up, yet free up enough to increase the pitch elsewhere

Conversely ... Why do Legacy/Network/Full Service carriers prefer the A320 family??? One important reason is that the wider fuselage of the Airbus narrow-body family accommodates more cargo including ULDs than the 737s. LCCs do not carry any cargo ... Another more recent reason is that the capital cost of a new B737 Max is now almost half that of an A320 since following the 2 year grounding Boeing couldn't even give away the Max for free ...

Not horrible but not something I’d repeat, though easier now that I usually eat only one meal a day.
