My grandfather ate his food EXTREMELY salty to the point where other people trying his dishes were taken aback by how salty it was. Also ate 7-8 eggs for breakfast every morning. He lived to be 99.

There's always a comment like this one hos vdos but it's really hard to trust no offence. High salt increases blood pressure and sometimes even stores water in body.

@@sakuranovaryan9261、it highly depends on the person, some who are sodium intolerant tends to be suffered from salt intake. But those numbers are very low, of course it differs from ethnicity to ethnicity. I’m a Japanese, only 2% of Japanese are sodium intolerant. So high blood pressure and salt intake has no correlation to the people without the condition.

Pregnant women in some 3rd world countries craved dirt. They actually ate dirt. Studies showed that the women were calcium deficient. Dirt apparently has a lot of calcium. Amazing that the body knew where to find what was needed when normal food was not available. Cravings should not be ignored though not followed blindly. There is an underlying need which should be considered.

Actually craving dirt is called Pica. It's a symptom of iron deficiency anemia which pregnant women are more susceptible to.

In the army, we are issued MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat) which are extremely high in sodium which lend to their long shelf life. During training in Louisiana in the summer, the humidity combined with the heat lead to many heat casualties (heat exhaustion, heat stroke, etc.). Those who experienced heat related injuries in many cases were drinking water, but were not eating their MRE's. As a medic, I harped on my platoon to make sure they replaced the salts they were loosing from sweat by eating every day. Thankfully, not one of the soldiers in my care suffered any major heat injuries.

Salt packets in the MRE's should also be consumed or saved for later consumption. I usually mix the salt in my canteen with water than balance out with canteen and a half of regular water and I achieve optimal hydration that way.

I have a medical condition where I don't retain enough salt. The dietary guidelines are so ingrained that despite many cardiologists prescribing me a very high salt diet, when I am in hospital the nursing staff often won't allow me more than one salt packet without an extra doctor consult. The government has played with the nation's health to devastating effect without science to back their advice. People are so convinced fat and salt are bad and that carbs are vital that I can't get salt in a hospital, but they'll try to force biscuits (cookies) and cordial (cool aid) down my throat... quite literally.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. I also have adrenal insufficiency like the boy in the video, though I imagine he likely had something closer to adison's disease. There's quite a few conditions out there where extra salt is needed

Actually the root word for "Salary" is "Sal" (Latin for Salt). The "salarium", was a Roman soldier's allowance to buy salt. :D

I suffered from migraines and fatigue constantly until I started carrying a bottle of pickle salt in my pocket and eating it throughout the day. This is the first time I've heard a defense for salt and I'm relieved

My ex demonized salt. Everytime I got out the salt shaker she got feisty. Supposedly salt was the world's worst drug, benefitting the body in no way whatsoever. Hard to take such claims serious from an alcoholic pothead though

The pothead part probably affected her on a cultural level, but you can look it up. Outside of getting tar in your lungs from smoking it (if you take it that way anyway) there's zero health problems to partaking in marijuana. The alcohol was damaging her body a whole lot though, my stepdad just a few months ago got out of a care center after multiple surgeries due to his alcoholism. If he drinks a drop of alcohol again since then he could literally die. Alcoholism is hell.

I used to work in Saudi Arabia. Summer temperatures often exceeded 50C (122F), and on site at a refinery went over 60C. Used to take salt tablets and drink lots of water - no problems at all.

The WHO guidelines are so broad and generalized that it would be a mistake for someone in your circumstance to follow them. I'd say most health guidelines should be taken with a grain of salt. ;)

In one high heat situation hovering at 135* F all I craved for supper were 2 T-bone steaks, milkshakes and Jugs of Water. There were salt tablets onsite, but in later years they were forbidden!

When I worked in the coolers at Walmart, I felt horrible for a long time but noticed that I felt better after eating McDonald's or similar fast food at lunch. Come to find that I was sweating in the cooler but couldn't feel it due to the cold temperatures. I had a sodium salt deficiency that took serious research to find because of the idiocy surrounding current "health" recommendations. The low salt "health" recommendation damn near killed me!

Cold increases heart rate, which in turn makes sodium depletion higher through urination. Its essential to consume salt in both extreme hot and cold temperatures.

When you have low blood sodium that doesn’t mean eat more salt, it means your blood volume is likely too high and the sodium is diluted, but there’s still plenty of sodium. Unless I’m very very rare cases when sodium is actually low in blood

The thing is, I input salt in most of my foods. Best part is this, my body tells me when I have had enough. I dont need any doctor to tell me when i'm eating too little or too much salt, my body does this free.

You're having too much, consistently, it's your body telling you that you're having too much. Your body shouldn't say one way or the other if you're having a healthy amount of salt. You only need 1 tsp a day unless you exercise a lot and that's more than people use to seasons their foods in a single meal often times.

WHAT I'VE LEARNED, you should hear my story about my low sodium and roller coaster blood pressures that my doctors so very much insisted was "just anxiety" (which I knew it was not) until I did my research and learned I had been sodium deficient and it was only getting worse. Lasted four years. Reached a crisis point last summer in '16 where I nearly died. I'd love to sue for malpractice, negligence, yada yada, but it would be hard to win. Regardless, I encountered abject ignorance from the ones I expected expertise. I now SALT LIBERALLY and feel 100% better. Thank you so much for this video, as you have JUSTIFIED my own stance, you have AFFIRMED what I knew and had to teach my doctor. Thank you.

I'm curious how much potassium you consume per day along with the salt, because I've been trying to be low sodium for about two weeks and I hate it. I don't want to reach the crisis point you were talking about.

i've been dealing with what i thought were " low electrolytes" feel weak, very low BP ( on high bp meds! ) have discovered i do not need added potassium I do take mag w/ calcium at bedtime. Have stopped the heart palps and raised bp up above 100...below that very weak. Mentioned this low bp to dr and told him i am taking 1/2 dose of the bp med but still having episodes of low bp. Finally figured it out....i was initially taking too much sodium which would make me retain water...so now just a shake in morning coffee and monitor bp as always. I feel best when it's between 100 and under 120 and between 60 and 70 . I should have known b/c when they medicated me first for high bp it was benicar HCT never allow t hem to give you hct...i had bp of 50/30 calling 911 they said eat salt ...but i finally went off. I've know people whose heart stopped b/c the HCT ran the potassium out of the body. Drs do NOT tell patients about this effect! Drs don't tell patients about things drs KNOW could help!

@@leesmith9360 sorry this happened and hope you feel better now. Have you heard of K2 and taking it with the calcium ? Motivational Doc on KZbin gives great advise on this and both should be taken together. K2 tells were the calcium where to go and moves it out where it should not be! Like soft tissue etc Also take high quality minerals you mentioned... the calcium my doc gave I didn't take it was equlivent to a bag of rocks not soluble! What do these people learn in school!

@MateGrinder, you are likely thinking of sea water, whose salt concentration is SO high, yes indeed, you will die of thirst there. but adding some salt, a little bit of sweet and a little bit of acid to a glass of water, and you have an instant hydration drink that is far better than Gatorade. That's all that drink is, by the way; sugar, salt, and acid; read the ingredients. A medical professional gave me a recipe: to 1/2 cup warm water, add a pinch (or more, depending) of salt, 1/2 t. honey, 1/2 t. lemon or lime juice or vinegar. Stir and drink. You will feel instantly refreshed. I use real maple syrup instead of honey.

Siim Land I'm a student here in Caxias do Sul, Brazil. And in my uni (UCS) there is a 2 million reais ( about 700 k dollars I guess) digital microscope. And the guy that works with it analysed pink salt and said it's nothing better in it compared to normal salt. That's just a bit of information if you want to save some cash

I remember when I moved to Canada from the Caribbean I always had a huge craving for salt. So much so that I started to periodically just eat some salt on it's own. Which kept me feeling great.

I went from less than 2300mg of sodium to 4000mg. BP stayed the same. AND I am more alert, and can think better. Overall, I just "feel" healthier.

Kaspars Vegeris: C*=5*(F*-32)/9 Just deal with it. For quick reference, -40*C=-40*F, 0*C=32*F, 20*C=68*F, 100*C=212*F. I can do the conversion mentally either way if the need arises, and so can you. Personally, I use both systems, depending on the situation, metric (MKS or CGS) for scientific apps, avoirdupois for the mundane. It's mostly a matter of habit and convention, and what metrology instruments I have at hand.

@@goyonman9655 The US was surveyed in miles. Europe was laid out on goat trails, so it doesn't matter what system you use. I use avoirdupois, SI, CGS, MKS, Troy, furlongs, or whatever, and convert as necessary. Apothecary is a PITA, so I mostly don't use that system. I have even worked on vehicles with a mixture of SAE and metric fasteners, and that was a horrendous nuisance. You can learn to convert too, and I won't pander to your or anyone else's laziness. Just so you know, the inch system was defined in terms of the metric system, 1 inch being defined as 2.54 cm exactly. So in that sense, the inch system *IS* metric. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

This is just personal experience, but I used to get a lot of migraines and excruciatingly nasty muscle cramps in my legs. I started drinking water saturated with Himalayan pink salt whenever either happened to me. The headaches would literally go away in ten to twenty minutes and the leg cramps would stop. Mind your electrolytes! Magnesium, potassium and sodium. You need that stuff.

I experienced the 2003 heat wave first hand. I was right in the epicenter of it. So many people died (more than 14 000 in France alone). What a nightmare! That was when I learned my lesson about the importance of consuming enough salt. You can drink all the water you want; if your body is lacking salt, your cells can't take in the water and dehydration may be the consequence. Table salt is better than no salt but high quality sea salt is what you should opt for as it offers a lot of additional health benefits..

Just a piece of historical fact relating to the dangers of salt depletion due to heat: It was common amongst experienced slave traders to lick the slaves and choose those with a saltier sweat. Many died in the ships due to excessive heat, so traders started to select slaves with more salt in their bodies, those tended to end up alive more often after the trips. Source is the book "think like a freak" from the same authors of "freakonomics".

Megamiintent in fact the thesis defended by the (black) author mentioned in the book is that this selection process is the cause of the observed high incidence of high blood pressure in black americans as compared to both white americans and black africans

It's not about "health" it's about how much salt they have in their bodies, and how much they can loose it before dying. When you're dehydrating your sweat becomes less and less salty (as is said in the video)

Very interesting! My grandmother and mother taught me from a very young age to eat apples with salt, I would grab the salt shaker, take it outside, pick an apple from the tree and sprinkle salt on every bite. Now I wish I paid more attention to their teachings.

Love your in depth body composition/chemistry channel. Do electrolytes! There's many stories of people who try to hydrate with only water. Only to die from lack of electrolytes! So hydration is something deeper than just water consumption.

Remember your body doesnt work the same way as who he is talking about. If your body cant filter out the salt or potassium such as a normal person's you could end up in deep trouble. But if that's not the case then ignore this.

During Soviet era, on factories which were dealing with something hot, like molten metal, guys were sweating pretty much, there was a tank with mineralized water near workplaces, workers were advised to drink it during the day.

Doctors aren't misinformed, the problem is the patients most of the time won't follow their advice. So they resort to just writing scripts for drugs. Changing your lifestyle is hard, most people won't do it, even if it kills them.

But I think you'll find my conjecture to hold water once you start looking at all this "seemingly" poor health "advice" through the lens of intentional population reduction. "THEY" have known all this info for hundreds of years. Much of it is hard wired into basic human knowledge passed down from one generation to the next in common food traditions and momma and grandma's admonitions to eat this or that, take your cod liver oil, cook with real fat, use salt, eat butter...Etc etc. Much of (not all) "science" in the case of human nutrition ends up being counter productive. It's a common theme. I think you'll find that there is some actual malice behind it if your look with a more jaundiced eye."

From last 25 years I cut down on salt and fat. My BP went out of control, doctor gave me different medications but no help. I told the guy who works in Vitamin shoppe about my high bp. He recommended potassium. Now everything is making sense. I was researching about which hormones effects the blood pressure which lead to your video. I really appreciate your help.

I sweat a lot and I also strongly reduced my salt intake for years. Now in the latest warm phase of the summer, my cardiovascular system completely ran rampant. Pulse above 110, while sitting, pressure in the chest, completely on edge for stress events, even the slightest ones made me super stressed. I increased my salt intake slowly, took isotonic drinks to go to sport and within a week all the symptoms were gone. I also put Vitamin D, B and Fishoil on my daily plan. So it is not 100% certain what made it better. But I absolutely was to low on salt, because I used literally none in home cooked meals.

Old people have arthritis in their major joints making it painful to stand up from a seated position. Many elderly people avoid drinking fluids because the less they drink, they less they have to get up to urinate, thus many elderly people dehydrate. Unfortunately, it's a vicious cycle because dehydration dries out the cartilage in their joints and weakens their muscles, making standing up more painful.

When mentioning the studies comparing salt and fibre intake between Akita and Aomori, it may be helpful to note that Aomori is famous for it's apples in Tohoku. They produce most of them, which no doubt accounts for why consumption is higher in Aomori than Akita, and why the study might like at Apple consumption in the first place.

You missing the most important fact: salt help ours body build stronger bone as we age. I've been on saturated fat (mostly butter and pork fat), high salt diet for over 4yr now. But same time I completely cut out unsaturated fat (all vegetable oil, including olive oil). Our health couldn't be any better and I'm 55 now. However, few month ago my heart feel funny. After watching your video and others I start adding potassium phosphate + potassium pill and eating more fruit/veggies. It's amazing in about 2-3wk I'm normal and so much calmer and not feeling like anxiety attack.

I've been doing keto and omad and i have crazy headaches. I wad afraid of upping my salts(sodium, potassium) too much as this was recommended by keto and omad experts. This video has calmed my nerves and allowed me to double my salt intake from 1 to 2 teaspoons of keltic salt/himalaya salt a day! Thnx for the great video!!

After watching your previous salt video I went from zero-added salt in my diet, to adding salt to practically everything. I'm getting AT LEAST 1.5g sodium per day now (it was 0-300mg previously), 3g is what I'm hitting almost every day, and 4g is what I aim for, but I don't always get there. Since doing this, the unquenchable thirst I constantly suffered from (mentioned in your video, which is what actually caught my attention!) has disappeared. I'm only thirsty when I'm actually thirsty now! And I feel better overall; I don't know how to explain it, but I feel like something that was "off" was finally fixed. Thank you so much for what you do... I was /really/ confused for a while over salt vs sodium, and it took me forever to figure out how to measure correctly. Sometimes I have a fresh fruit/green milk smoothie for my lunch, and now I add salt to even that! (:

Hi, I was referring to the unquenchable thirst that is a symptom of low sodium, as he mentioned in a study in his previous Salt video. The more water I drank, the thirstier I got. What I got was exactly as described in the previous video. As stated, simply upping my sodium to a normal 3-4g has completely banished this constant thirst, and I only get thirsty when it's appropriate to be thirsty (if I haven't drank water in a while, or a while after I've eaten something salty and didn't drink water). Before, when I was on a zero-sodium added diet, I was overshooting 8 glasses of water per day, and I still would be thirsty. Now, it's difficult to even get to 8 glasses of water because I'm not so unquenchably thirsty. Unquenchable thirst is a symptom of sodium deficiency, and I never knew. I always thought I was still getting /too much/ sodium because of the thirst, and was always trying to avoid it.

Hey, I know this video's really old, and you might not look into the comments here, but there's one thing I wanna actually bring up: There a special type of salt known as "nuchi masu (ぬちまーす)" This is sea salt created in Okinawa, and it's very carefully made. Now the most important thing about this salt, is that it contains a bunch of minerals along with its salt. Those minerals are: Potassium, Calcium, and Magnesium. When I happened to go to Okinawa and visited their salt museum, those minerals really caught my attention and was reminded me of this video immediately.

My theory is that since most people get no significant exercise, the WHO guidelines are probably pretty good for them. But if you get any exercise at all you need more salt and potassium.

WHO focus on people who get 2000 calories a day. You cant eat 2000 calories a day if you don't exercise enough. So the WHO is not focusing on people who exercise, but a 25 year old woman who does moderate activity

Thank you for the additional video! I sent the link to my friends and family because I am trying to un-brainwash (brain rinse) those I care about and others. I gave my friends and family 3 different kinds of salt (pink, red alaea and black lava salt - great on eggs!) Tumeric root powder and powdered greens for christmas one year. I was trying to hint at the health benefits of all thus stated. This is also why I started my catagorized youtube channel to help with searching info easier. Good day to you and others! :)

Another great health piece. Very sound advice. Studies I'm familiar with suggests the relationship between sodium intake and morbidity & mortality tends to follow a 'j curve' with the sweet spot between too little and too much being between 3 and 6 gms/day.

Thomas delauer said sometimes your body craves sugar when instead it really wants salt...what if it's just all the carbs from the sugary foods that your body wants since carbs help retain water which helps retain sodium allowing you to hold on to what little sodium you have left?so therefore if you crave alot of sugar it means you're extremely low in sodium

Great video! I always thought that the common recommendation on sodium intake seemed too low. My diet has me craving potato chips and beef jerky. I often don't feel well when under my diet and I'm getting the right amount of calories/carbs/protein per day, but I always want something salty. I'll try salting my eggs/fish more and see how that goes.

Try replacing Conventionally Grown vegetables fertilized with Nitrate Fertilizer with Organically Grown. When I eat conventionally grown vegetables at supper time, my sinus bulbs are inflamed, onsetting snoring and sleep apnea that night. I suspect the Nitrates are responsible for cellularly inflammation! Some Jurisdictions monitor NITRATE Levels in Baby Phood!

I wish to thank you. You were one of sources I used to reject a ACE inhibitor my NURSE recommended. She seems prescription happy. What I realized is that the medication I must take, is causing low salt due to vomiting and diarrhea and increased water intake due to this. I was experiencing nausea, headaches and brain fog. Then I was like those are same symptoms of ACE inhibitor....so instead of taking pill, I just increased salt intake. Much less nausea or no headaches. Less vomiting too. ALso my blood pressure immediately went from high 140/90 to 110/60s...when I stopped purposefully taking salt, but maintained a bit, it went up to 130s/70s (ie if feeling nauseous when waking up, I'll eat some potato chips)

I love it. Diabetes Association pushes moderate/high carb diets to keep you consistently on insulin to treat you T2 diabetes. You may not need to take insulin if your blood sugar wasn’t high in the first place from said carbs… People with high blood pressure are put on low salt diets so they get prescribed ACE inhibitors. Have “high” cholesterol (which is actually preferred)? Here’s your statin (Pfizer) with all its side effects, like impotence. Don’t worry, we (Pfizer) make pills to fix that. 🙄

I eat pink rock salt like candy. My sodium always tests low. My body knows it needs the salt. Oh, and I've had very low blood pressure my entire life. In fact, the one time I tried to reduce my salt, my blood pressure swung way UP and way DOWN. It was totally dysregulated. Back to my salt candy.
