At first I thought it was about a gay love story before I knew the director said it wasnt about that. But when Alberto told his story that his dad left and never came back, I realized that the reason why Alberto wants Luca to stay with him is because he doesn’t want another person close to him to leave. And when he accepted Luca to leave with Giulia to school, it shows that he’s moved on from his father and no matter where Luca goes, he will always be his best friend. And the whole message of “accepting yourself for who you are” and “finding the right people who love you for who you really are” really resonates with me and other children who are scared to show who they really are. Like the line near the end of the movie “not everyone will accept him, but he’s good at finding those who will.” Is a great line for kids to hear, because they’ll have to come to terms that not everyone is going to love them and accept them as their true identity. But it’ll be worth it when you find the people who will accept you.

Luca came at the perfect time for me. I've recently started the path to be diagnosis with autism. I've been terrified to let my friends and family know about this journey in fear of how they will react. Luca means so much becuase not only is it about learning to overcome the fear of being yourself, it's message is that when you are yourself, the relationships you make are more real and lasting. I've watched this movie every day since it came out (it has sort of become a special interest) and even though I think it is flawed in a lot of ways, it means so much to me

Luca proved that sometimes movies don’t have to be this grand, epic, adventure tear-jerker that leaves you thinking about it years after you initially watch it. A movie can just simply be about two Italian fish boys trying to win a race, and in my opinion, sometimes that ends up being better anyway. I enjoyed this movie so much more than Soul, and even though that movie is a masterpiece in and of itself, Luca just felt like a breath of fresh air for Pixar with its simplicity. Luca was a refreshing film to come out of Pixar's repertoire. This felt oddly enough like Pixar's safest and to the books film. It wasn't trying to be extremely inventive or existential like such films as Inside Out Ratatouille or Coco. If Luca were made by another studio like Sony or Dreamworks, I bet a lot of the criticism of "simplicity" wouldn't be there. People have a very specific expectation of what they think a Pixar film should be, so they make unnecessary comparisons instead of looking at the movie on its own. Pixar has kind of "typecast" itself.

the thing that bothers me the most abt what the director said and the "iTs NoT gAY itS A KIdS MoViE" argument is that it implies that queerness is something that's adult and inappropriate/explicit. if two straight kids can fall in love at a young age and have everyone be like "awww how wholesome" how is two queer kids falling in love or coming out any different? if one of them was a girl they'd totally be paired together romantically. i also hate how people think that discovering that you're queer is something that you can only be sure of once you're an adult, like if youre a straight person, you probably grew up having crushes on tv characters or people in your class, so why is it any different than for a lgbt+ person? i mean obviously not all queer people know they're queer immediately, figuring yourself out takes some time but some kids do realize it earlier in life so its important to recognize that in our media and tell stories about queer kids. if people wanna interpret luca as a gay movie, they can go right ahead.
@JADE..........

seriously! queerness is not not at all explicitly sexual, and then people treat it like it is, or if its taboo and only for adults. and then there's people that think they can "turn" gay, like no, its always with you. just gotta realize it is all. but going back, queerness is universal and with everyone, being straight when your a kid or teenager is okay, why cant being gay also be that way? its the same thing. but y'know just with two people of the same sex. what is so horrible to people with that??

I think I like Luca a little too much...as in, it’s high on my list on favorite movies. I could go into every reason why, but this comment would be too long so I’m just gonna give my favorite reason. The whole story, while beautifully simple, was wonderfully crafted. The character arcs were just... chef’s kiss. But one of my favorite scenes was the “character argument scene.” Allow me to explain. So I’ve noticed in stories that involve some kind of friendship in the plot, the two “friend characters” get into some kind of huge argument, usually towards the end. Now...(laughs) Since FRIENDSHIP is one of the THEMES in this movie...I was more than ready for the “character argument.” And I think Luca handled it well. They built up the topic of the fight so well throughout the film (Luca becoming more and more interested with outer space and other human stuff and Alberto getting jealous). So, when they do get to the argument scene, it doesn’t feel forced or unrealistic. I wasn’t aware it was gonna get physical but hey, I’d do the same in that situation. Then, Alberto makes the STUPID decision to reveal himself as a sea monster and Luca makes the STUPID decision to rat him out. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, it’s actually the opposite. It shows how these characters haven’t reached their “Oh crap I was wrong about everything because I let a lie control my life” moment. Before that moment though, we get a short “grey scene” with Luca being fricking depressed for a hot moment before going to talk to Alberto. When the “Oh crap” moment does come, we get the epic and beautifully animated Race Tournament that I forgot the name of. Now I realize this comment has more or less evolved into me obsessively dissecting the Disaster-Dark Moment-Aha Moment Sequence in this movie. I’m sorry, I’m a writer. I notice these things! Anyways, if you’ve stuck around this long...thanks for listening to me ramble.

Luca is ambitious in it's own ways, it's gorgeous, the animation is amazing, the details, the textures, and yes even the story. A dash of Italian vibes, Luca is just different compared to most Pixar films over the years, the perfect summer movie for this summer. It really needs the love and inspirations to this film 🇮🇹💙 Fun fact: Enrico Casarosa wanted to include a metaphor of feeling different from others, while he grew up in Italy there are some folk tales and old stories of sea monsters. Hence the word "Sea monsters" are different when human have their perspective to them.

Here’s my take on Luca and why it’s one of my favorite movies of all time. (This is sort of a copypasta so some of the points were mentioned in the vid but I still go into depth with them). One of my favorite parts about Luca is the message. Or more accurately, it’s lack of a main message. There are certainly some messages more prominent than others, but none of them take priority over another, and they all contribute to well-balanced theme with multiple morals that can be applied to basically everyone. That gives the story a more “realistic” feel than other stories with a single message in mind, or with separate morals competing with each other. The most obvious message is the one Grandma Paguro says at the end, “Some people, they’ll never accept him. But some will.” This is reinforced by the town’s constant references to hunting sea monsters and Ercole’s obsession with hunting them and his unwillingness to change. Obviously it’s not the first movie about accepting people for who they are and eliminating bigotry in society, but it incorporates it so naturally and realistically that even explicitly stating the moral felt like a normal progression of the conversation and story as a whole, while some other movies feel like they have to shoehorn it in by stating it, or force an unreasonable amount of change in a short time. Other times they just beat you over the head with the message so hard that it’s hard to appreciate other aspects of the story. It’s a very important moral for sure, but movies that focus mainly on that tend to feel a little pushy. But Luca isn’t really pushing it, like it’s making some judgmental commentary on society and telling us we need to change. Instead, it feels more like it’s showing us *how* people can change *on their own*, and how doing that makes the world a better place. Another message could be that friends need to lift each other up. This is also tied in with learning to change and become a better person. This is mainly Alberto’s story and message. In the beginning, he’s actually pretty narcissistic and routinely ignores Luca’s personal triumphs and pretends he’s better than him because he’s been on the surface longer. But later on, it becomes more clear from his history with his dad that he was just trying to seek validation and praise from someone, because it seemed obvious that his dad didn’t give him that. He even went as far as to reveal himself to Giulia to keep Luca from leaving like his dad did. Luca’s self-preservation in that moment very crushingly confirmed Alberto’s doubts about himself that he’s “bad” and that everyone “is better off without” him. But when Luca tries to get him back after he pushed Luca away, he learns that they needed to lift each other up rather than living for themselves. So throughout the whole movie after that point, he’s nothing but supportive of Luca. And that, I feel, was an extremely mature thing for him to realize and do, especially when he sold the Vespa for a train ticket just for Luca. There are ADULTS that struggle with this: changing and moving on, or recognizing themselves as a negative influence and actively working to change. I think this was one of the best morals or messages I’ve seen in a family movie, especially the way it was handled in Luca. But there are even more things you could find. Messages about learning to do new things and to be outside your comfort zone, about growing up, family, perseverance and hard work, the joy that can come from learning, and even more I’m sure I haven’t mentioned. And for the parents watching, in addition to all these lessons (because most are certainly applicable to adults as well), it teaches them to let their kids grow up. One day, every kid from every overprotective household will leave home and experience the world. And while it is scary and nerve-racking and maybe even a little dangerous, it needs to happen. But it also teaches at the same time that they can’t be absent. Kids still need guidance and protection and help as they grow up and leave the nest. They need to be taught to run and jump and push themselves, but also have that hand to pick them back up when they fall. In conclusion, I absolutely adore this movie: how cute it is, how well it tells and balances its messages, and how relatable it can be to practically everyone. And I didn’t even mention the stylized, purposely cartoonish animation and how consistent its use was, how it added charm and humor without being distracting or taking away from the mood of any scene, or how the voice acting almost always sounded completely genuine and full of personality. Luca is one of a very small number of family/kids’ movies that I’ll gladly rewatch over and over until I make myself sick of it. If you don’t feel the same, I implore you to watch it one more time with the things I mentioned in mind and look for just how well it does in so many areas. If you made it here, thanks for reading this whole thing and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Luca is in my top 10 Pixar films BECAUSE of its simplicity. If you ask me, Soul and Inside Out are dreadfully overrated because they try and do too much in too little time, and everything feels muddled. This movie knew exactly what it was, went for it, and did it brilliantly. Loved it
@SylentVoidkeeper
@SylentVoidkeeper 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like the backlash tends to come from people who need to justify their enjoyment of animated movies by painting it as something more “adult”. Like, I remember when Inside Out came out and people were openly saying that the movie wasn’t for kids because it was too deep. First off, I’d be insulted if I was a kid hearing that, I feel like a lot of adults underestimate what kids do and don’t understand. Secondly, it ignores that Inside Out is literally happening inside the mind of a 12 year old child. The same thing happened with Soul, as 90 percent of the discussion was about Joe’s story and the “deep” message behind it, completely forgetting 22 was the co protagonist and is undoubtably child coded, suffering from likely thousands of years of verbal abuse from mentors who barely knew how to deal with her because she didn’t give them the time of day. So when a movie like Luca comes along and it’s very simple, people automatically have this idea that Pixar movies NEED to have these deep messages and heavy themes. I enjoyed that the movie felt almost like the first Toy Story, a very simple narrative that just lets the characters play off each other. We need more of that in animation, stuff that’s not trying to do much else but be fun and clever.

I love movies that are exciting, and dramatic, and emotional, and Pixar has plenty of those. But not every movie has to be that, and Luca was something new and different. It was just simple and charming, and had a very nostalgic feeling to it, which in a way almost made it resonate with me more than some more intense films. Everyone bases the “quality” of media on such things as how large-scale, and deep, and thought-provoking it is, but the thing is that not everything is trying to be that. You can’t fault something for being less ambitious than it’s trying to be.

I really don't think that what the director said had anything to do with Disney forcing him to say anything. He has confirmed that this film is based on his childhood friendship with a more non-conformist kid. It's pretty clear to me that he always intended the story to be more about the platonic friendship of two young kids and never intended any of these connections to CMBYN to be drawn. Also people, stop comparing it to CMBYN when the inspiration clearly comes much more from Miyazaki movies like Porco Rosso or Kiki's Delivery Service.

Honestly, from the way you talk about it, it IS nice to see an animated project be good and not tackle darker subjects or try to wring a serious plotline. It feels like this era of both TV and film animation has been about proving through syndication and themes that animation isn't just for kids when what it feels like it's proving is that kids movies aren't just for kids. That's great in and of itself, but it's a genre trope at this point to do a dramatic turn in a lighter kid's story and it's gotten less impactful to me. I'm glad that this movie is just simple and straightforward, cause even if animation is a medium for everyone, I miss it feeling like a place where kids just enjoy great work without twenty-somethings jumping in on em. As much as I'll always love Wall-e, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, and the rest, I think that the early seasons of Gumball is what I'll feel gets out the best from this generation and I think it's a great example of the importance for kids to have their own content, separate from us, that they get to appreciate analytically later. Thanks for the review! I haven't seen the movie yet (lol) but my friend is begging me to and I'll check it out.

loved the movie so much. i had heard of it but never took the time to watch it, then today something called me to it and it was 100% what I needed to watch. I'm a lot like Luca, I want to see the world and enjoy new things but at the same time i'm very scared and anxious about everything, and watching the movie I got the realization that we need to be open to seeing things as a kid, with wonder and curiosity, and say "silenzio, bruno!" to the voices of our heads. i felt really good watching it and inspired me to get out of my shell and be my true self with no fear.

Even though i don’t think it’s one of Pixar’s best films . This is one that I don’t think I’ll get tired of rewatching.

Its a very simple movie but dang that got me in the feels. I could really relate to the friendship dynamics this movie showed. When i was in 4th grade i didnt have a friend at first but after some time i found an amazing one that was my best friend and we had a lot of fun together. But in 7th grade another girl joined our group. My best friend and our new friend very quickly found their similarities and i felt kinda left behind. I was kinda jealous at first but quickly it turned into self hatred. i thought i was the problem and that everyone would be better off without me. I was just an annoyance and nothing more. Im really trying to change my mindset about myself and work things out but its been really hard. Just to let you know my friends knew nothing about this and ive now only told a little about that time. its not their fault and we are still amazing friends. They are definitely best friends with each other and there is nothing wrong with that. Im really hoping this year i can open up even more. Take care!!

Non plot movies are callled slice of life movies i believe. Luca was definitely an earnest slice of life film. But yeah i wish there were more slower moments of introspection in it.

Honestly, Luca made me feel that wholesome, down to earth, wonderous vibe that I got from Fantastic Mr Fox. And Fantastic Mr Fox is my 2nd favorite movie behind the spongebob movie. So yeah I think 'nuff said, Luca is a solid 9/10

The thing that's so great about Luca IS its simplicity. The simplicity of this movie can appeal to a larger audience as it is not specific to one, and it's because it's so simple and wholesome that I will be left thinking about it for the next few days and remember it fondly.
