Once he failed to get the prophecy, handed over the diary, and then his only son it became clear that he would only be treated as a servant and never rise again. He was outed at the ministry which is where his greatest influence was so he was no longer useful. He left not out of love but because there was nothing to gain by staying.

I think, Narcisa told Lucius, that she lied about Harry’s death. That the dark lord was unsuccessful to kill Harry in the Forbidden Forest. This might have made his belief strong that Harry was the one to kill Voldemort. Lucius made a calculative right decision, safe for his family .
@LittleMissRequiem
@LittleMissRequiem 4 жыл бұрын
3V VV That would make perfect sense for Narcissa to do that, but IMHO Lucius’ motives for changing allegiances went much deeper than just seeing Harry as the one destined to kill Voldemort. Notice how, in Lucius’ last pre-defection scene, he first begs Voldemort to let him find Draco and get him out of the war zone, then when that doesn’t work, he tries to manipulate Voldemort into calling off the attack on Hogwarts. The latter implies that Lucius’ loyalty to Voldemort was already on shaky ground even prior to Narcissa’s lie, showing at the very least that Lucius is less willing to be completely submissive to Voldemort while Draco’s life is on the line. It was still a very calculated choice on the Malfoys’ part, but it was partly because they sensed Voldemort’s time was up as you mentioned, and partly because they realized that, regardless of whether or not Voldemort won, there was nothing left for them on Voldemort’s side except for more suffering, more humiliation, and the very real possibility of torture and/or death for them all. Not only that, but notice how the Malfoys *NEVER* take sides against each other in any given conflict throughout the series. When Lucius first aligned with Voldemort and became a Death Eater, Narcissa and Draco came to support the cause as well, even if only from the sidelines. When Voldemort fell the first time and Lucius built up the image of a respectable wizard under the Imperius Curse to avoid punishment, Narcissa and Draco each followed suit in maintaining the respectable façade (even if a then-preteen Draco sometimes talked too much about pure blood supremacy for his own good despite Lucius warning him not to). When Lucius suffered a massive fall from grace on both sides of the war, Narcissa and Draco each started to waver in their support for the Death Eaters but weren’t quite willing to defect from them yet, becoming more or less neutral by the end of Half-Blood Prince. When Narcissa finally had enough and lied to Voldemort about Harry being dead, the entire Malfoy family defected from Voldemort soon afterward, with Lucius even going as far as to help the Ministry round up all of Voldemort’s remaining followers after they went into hiding. And even when Lucius and Narcissa were disappointed with the more accepting blood purity views of Draco’s chosen wife Astoria and Lucius argued with Draco over the latter preferring to end the Malfoy bloodline rather than risk Astoria’s health, by all accounts they still loved and cared for Draco all the same, and that coupled with the fact that most other pureblood families would disown their members for such a marriage (e.g. Cedrella Black following her marriage to Septimus Weasley) speaks volumes. *TL;DR: I agree completely, but you could argue that Lucius’ motives for defecting run even deeper than that.*

Nope... Azkaban prisoners are not allowed any sort of contact with the outside. In or out. This means; no visitors, no letters, no books, no creative supplies, and absolutely no health care or dental attention as Dementors are the main facilitators of Azkaban. Besides the occasional Wizengamot Inspector (which Dumbledore says were too horrified to ever speak about the conditions or make any reports) the sole exception is Barty Crouch Jr. And that was only b/c his father was the Minister of Magic at that time, and his mother was dying. The saddest part about the series is that if Sirius could write to Harry and explained what happened he would probably still be alive. 😿

@@gankz-md5ulHarry was the master of the elder wand by time he met Voldemort in the end battle. He disarmed Malfoy in the Malfoy Manor and Malfoys wand switched alliances to Harry and so did the Elder wand because its master had been defeated in a dual. This is why the avada curse didn't work on Harry, Voldemort was using a wand that belonged to Harry and it couldn't hurt him. If Voldemort had used his own wand, Harry would have died. Harry told Voldemort that the wand belonged to him but Voldemort didn't understand the implications of wand ownership...hence the reason he killed Snape instead of just disarming him, which would have worked if Snape was actually the owner of the elder wand.

Eeeeh he was pure blood supremacist bo doubt about it. He wasn’t Wormtail, he gladly joined up because of his beliefs not his fears. Of course when things went south the first time he claimed he did so unwillingly. The second time he was more than happy to get the band back together. But when he lost his master’s favor and his family was threatened he swallowed the bitter pill and betrayed him for the sake of his family.

Technically he didn’t betray the Dark Lord since he was never actually loyal to anyone whose surname was not Malfoy. Lucius and Narcissa were self-serving opportunists who did what was best for them and Draco, and Voldemort was on his way out. Lucius would have preferred Voldemort come out on top for ideological reasons, but his attachment to principles was slippery at best, and he never truly cared enough to pledge himself in the same was as his sister-in-law.

I think it's reallys strange that people always say Lucius should have gone to Askaban, but think it was okay for Draco to walk away. Draco too was a member of a terroristic organisation and he is guilty of several attempted murders (which are in many countries punished as commited murders) and used unforgivable curses. A good judicial system really shouldn't let people go because they had a very convenient change of heart, espiacially with so severe crimes. But to be fair, the whole judicial system in the wizarding world and the way they wage war sucks, so this is only something pretty minor.

@dr103 This would maybe count as an excuse, if his parents were some hostages or victims, but they were not. They joint the Deatheaters voluntarily. And Draco himself was in no immediate danger, as soon as he arrived in Hogwarts. Having a family in danger doesn't give anybody the right to break laws as they see it fit. Maybe to destroy property or hurt or kill the people immediately threatening himself or his family, but murdering people certainly not. It wasn't even like he was still needed in the story, Rowling just extended his moral redemption to a legal redemption.

Simple. Voldemort was losing. He twice used AVADA KADAVARA on Harry Potter and twice failed to kill him. I think the reason is much simpler. Rich people generally don't participate in revolutions. They have very little to gain, and a lot to lose. The Malfoy family was already independently wealthy, with a great deal of influence in the Ministry and in wizarding society as a whole. Why would Lucius want a new dark lord to overthrow the society that he was already at the top of? He joined at first for ideological reasons - he believed in pureblood supremacy. But he had no interest in restructuring wizard society.

I think Voldemort wasn't just punishing Lucius for his failure at the Department of Mysteries or for his unwillingness to find him. I'm sure that his wrath stems from the fact that Lucius had sacrificed one of his horcruxes, caused it to be destroyed and alerting Dumbledore of their existence. He couldn't however punish Lucius too directly for it as it would seem a bit disproportional, so in a way he punished Lucius by having the son clean up the mess of the father by assassinating Dumbledore before the latter could draw too many conclusions and start trying to destroy the rest of the horcruxes. The further humiliations feels more like a reminder to Lucius that he has lost his position as favorite and will have to work his way up again, in the coming years. As I believe that given enough time, Voldemorts treatment of Lucius would improve again if it wasn't for the disappearance and destruction of more of his horcruxes. That put Voldemort too much on edge and he probably blamed Lucius for most of it. I'm also pretty sure that Lucius never really comprehended why Voldemort was so angry at him for the destruction of the diary, though he must have known it was more important than his master had led on. However, the anger of his master, his outbursts (at one point, he killed everyone in his vicinity for knowing the Hufflepuff cup was stolen) and his never-ending obsession with Harry Potter can't have inspired much confidence in Lucius about the mental state of his master. I think Lucius was one and possibly the only one, who realized that Voldemort's armor started to show cracks and he was the first too fully realize just what kind of a paranoid monster was learning beneath the shell of the dark wizard. How long till his master grew paranoid and decided to prune his own ranks of those who might be a threat to his rule and stand in his way. And with his fall from favor, there wasn't much for him to be happy about in servicing Voldemort. With feelings of fear dominating his feelings towards Voldemort, it is easy to see why he turned his back on the Dark Lord when it became clear that he was losing it.

@Gmail com Oh, I know he didn't realize that Dumbledore had started hunting down his horcruxes, let alone destroy them but the mere thought that Dumbledore might suspect Voldemort had created horcruxes, must have terrified the Dark Lord. And what Dumbledore had, was far worse. He had evidence, it wasn't just suspicion any more. And while Voldemort was sure that Dumbledore couldn't acted yet on this information and confident that even if he tried, it would have taken him ages to find them, I do think that it made Dumbledore a priority target. It also lines up pretty well timeline wise: Voldemort learned from Lucius that the diary was destroyed and mere weeks later, he assigned Draco the task of killing the Hogwarts Headmaster. And from the books, I did get the feeling it at least has crossed his mind when he heard what happened to his diary. There is a line in the seventh book where he is trying to reassure himself that his horcruxes are fine and that he didn't feel the Diary's destruction because he didn't have a body but if something had happened to the others since his return, he would have felt it (he didn't). I believe this was after he learnt they had broken into Gringotts. Seeing how quick, almost natural the thought came to him, I would think it odd, this would have been the first time he considered this, based on the circumstances.

@Gmail com Fair point but has Voldemort ever outright mentioned to himself that he feared death? He wanted to defeat it, overcome this weakness but he never described it as a fear either, not even in his most private thoughts. Yet, we know that he was afraid of it. So it not being outright mentioned, doesn't mean he never, no matter how brief, considered it before immediately dismissing it. He might have been arrogant enough to believe that nobody knew that he had multiple horcruxes but knew Dumbledore knew of at least one and he would be stupid to assume that he didn't consider it possible that Dumbledore, if given enough time to linger on it, would discover it was part of more. He assumed nobody knew they existed, not that nobody ever would be able to figure out they existed (which would be ridiculous to not consider at least once, especially if part of the secret has passed through the hands of someone who never trusted you). After all, he also considered the possibility that his diary wasn't the only horcrux destroyed already before dismissing it and this was something he considered before the cup was stolen and probably when he learnt the diary was destroyed. And I think this was why he wanted Dumbledore dead so desperately. He knew that he would have to act quickly and his surprise can be explained by the safe assumption that Voldemort was convinced that Dumbledore couldn't have figured things out that quickly. He was convinced he neutralized Dumbledore before he discovered too much and was surprised and shocked to learn that Dumbledore might not only have known enough but also shared this knowledge with his greatest enemy. Wouldn't you be surprised if a problem you though you had taken care of, returning?

@Hayward Blake Snape has implied that if Draco failed his task, Voldemort would turn to Snape to eliminate Dumbledore. That was always the real plan, I believe. But he did want to use Draco to make an example out of the Malfoys about failing him. Draco would get the first attempt and in the likely event that he failed, Snape would be able to strike in the aftermath of Draco's failure, when everyone was distracted by the circumstances. Going by the fact that when Snape vowed loyality to Dumbledore, he feared for his life and begged to not be killed, I would say that during the "First Wizarding War of Great Brittain", Voldemort already had several assassins killed by Dumbledore. So he knew that the headmaster wasn't an easy target, still the situation was now more urgent than ever.

In my opinion, Lucius became a death eater at a young age, wanting to gain power and promote the pureblood doctrine and he didn't understand at that time what being a Death Eater implies. The Malfoys are amongst my top favorite characters of all time in the Harry Potter franchise. I don't think Lucius Malfoy was a bad person. I mean, on the outside, he was, but deep down he was a good person. I think he wanted to abandon Lord Voldemort the moment Draco Malfoy was assigned to assassinate Albus Dumbledore. He cared about his family too much to care about Lord Voldemort. Speaking of Lucius' family, Narcissa was - in my opinion - the dark version of Lily Potter, who later turned noble. It is not a small thing to lie to Lord Voldemort about his nemesis' death, and Narcissa did that perfectly. Had she not lied to Lord Voldemort, the Wizarding World would have been completely destroyed. So, she was one of the few to _actually_ save the Wizarding World. And finally, Draco was _forced_ by Lord Voldemort to do evil things, it wasn't his choice, and ultimately, like his parents, he turned to the good side. That's why the Malfoys are amongst my top favorite characters of all time in the Harry Potter franchise.

I doubt that Harry would do that. He was bullied by his cousin and his friends so he knew what it's like to be in the weakest spot. That made him stick with Ron and he liked him. Draco was his 'enemy'. His father was a Death Eater. Even if they did become friends, I doubt it would have been genuine as Draco would have told his father everything. He would have betrayed Harry. At that time, his family status was prestigious. In Malfoy Manor, he didn't reveal Harry's identity because his family lost that status. His family was greatly humiliated after the Department of Mysteries Battle. Draco went through terrible time in his 6th year. He had a big mouth but he wasn't a murderer.

I don’t think Lucius Malfoy really believed in Voldemort’s cause and he definitely didn’t like the way Voldemort’s way of ridding the world of muggles, he just wanted to protect his family and at the time when he joined Voldemort he was joining the side that had the most power and who he believed could protect his either pregnant wife or his baby son and his wife whom he loved very much. Also Bellatrix is the last person who would ever betray Voldemort because she actually believes in his cause and is a blood lust maniac. I also don’t believe that Voldemort is to blame for his actions. Think about it logically. Voldemort did what he did because he has no moral compass. He has no moral compass because he is a sociopath. He is a sociopath because he was conceived while his father was on a love potion which makes it impossible for him to feel emotion. When it serves his cause to be mad or upset in anyway he did but he can’t naturally feel emotion. He also is a sociopath partly because he didn’t have anyone to raise him. His dad abandoned him and his mum is dead. Therefore it is not his fault. Logic

It's interesting to see some of the internal politics among the Death Eaters. Voldemort was clearly after an excuse to kill Lucius that the other Death Eaters would accept. It shows that his hold on them was more fragile than it seems at first glance. Lucius was a man of such great wealth and status that they all looked up to. If Voldemort just killed him for what was, in their eyes, not a justifiable reason, then they would know that anyone could be next. They would start to see Voldemort as a madman who rewarded his most loyal servants with torture and death. And given the symbolic significance of the Malfoy family, Voldemort betraying them would be seen as Voldemort betraying his own cause of pure blood supremacy. This combined with Voldemort himself being a half blood - something that the Death Eaters who knew this uncomfortably swept under the rug - might have been enough to fracture the loyalty of the Death Eaters. Now that I think of it, Lucius was actually a potential rival to Voldemort's power in terms of influence.

Great comment! I’d been wondering why Voldemort bothered to keep Lucius around when he clearly resented him. Voldemort being worried about the loyalty of his other followers would make sense for his character. Like you said, in many ways Lucius was a more perfect symbol for the Death Eater ideology than Voldemort himself. It also shows how paranoid and insecure Voldemort was after his resurrection. I imagine the Death Eaters probably noticed he was more unhinged than last time. I wish we had gotten a few more scenes of the Death Eaters’ internal politics. Would have been fun to get some juicy Death Eater gossip lol

Voldemort threatened his wife and son while he was in Azkaban, hopeless. Voldemort even manipulated a naive, sixteen years old Draco Malfoy to be a Death Eater and instructed him to kill the greatest wizard that has ever lived. Not to mention, his home was turned into a place where Voldemort killed and tortured people. Lucius may be a bad man but unlike Voldemort, he knows love. His family is more important than his ambition to kill muggles. So it would make sense why he would betray him the moment he had the chance.

Lucius fully supported Voldemort and his ideals, but valued his family and his own safety a bit more. They were the only thing that would’ve caused him to betray Voldemort. Narcissa on the other hand was more morally ambiguous as she never joined the death eaters and although she was a pure blood supremacist she never had any interest in exterminating muggles or muggle borns, just regarded herself as superior. She was 100% only in that situation due to her husband and later son, and she took the first opportunity she had to betray him to protect her family. Likewise Draco was a product of his father with regard to ideology but only became a death eater as he was forced to as a way of punishing Lucius, and he also changed sides quickly and didn’t particularly like being there in the first place. Draco and Narcissa are the two more redeeming qualities of their family, but Lucius was just evil, a supremacist and a nasty person who got on the wrong end of Voldemort’s temper and decided to save his own skin

Loyal, bigoted, Scotty, and unlike Bella completely sane. But, he like so many other characters proved why Riddle's inability to connect with emotion, his lack of understanding of love and family, was in the end his undoing. Lucious did indeed love his wife and son though his position forced him to never show it as that was considered weakness in Tom's eyes. A part of me wondered if it truly was the love potion that kept him from understanding or if it was because he was raised in an orphanage with no one giving him love and affection that truly caused his emotional disconnect.

i have a question what if a second "wizard vs muggle" war would happen in the modern times (21st century)?
@flerpas6953
@flerpas6953 4 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't go well for the wizards. The last time wizards and muggles were in conflict was in the 1600s, when things got so bad for the wizarding world that they passed the International Statute of Secrecy. They opted to hide from muggles instead of continue to face persecution from muggles. It would be a lot worse today with muggles having modern weaponry that most wizards probably don't understand. Also, the wizarding world wouldn't be unified in a war against muggles. Muggle-borns, a lot of half-bloods, and pro-muggle purebloods like the Weasleys would probably support the muggles in a war against the wizard army which would basically be made up of Death Eaters and other pureblood supremacists

@fat cow The Statute of Secrecy was designed to protect wizards from muggles, not the other way around. The wizarding world faced persecution by muggles, with many tried and executed for witchcraft. JK Rowling tied the story in with real history, using the real witch hunts of the age, like the Salem Witch Trials, as the basis for wizards going into hiding. We also haven't gotten to the main issue at hand, and that's population. The wizarding population is far too small to wage war against the vastly larger muggle population. It's the reason that muggles were able to persecute wizards before, and it's still the reason why wizards can't overcome muggles in the modern age.

I disagree with some of your points. Firstly, Lucius is not the pure blood fanatic that fandom presents. Pottermore confirms that the Malfoy family has half-bloods in its family tree and although Lucius could use the arguement that all four of his grandparents are pure blood/magical plus the whole sacred 28 thing (if someone like Bella presses the point), he knows that there are a few half-blood brides with muggle heritage in the family tree. He knows this. Draco probably doesn’t but Lucius does. His pure blood ideology is there (chamber of secrets arc being proof) but Lucius’s primary motivation is power. He wants world domination. No doubt he would have asked Voldemort if he could have been minister for magic if he had remained in favour. Lucius does not see himself as Lord Voldemort’s servant. He sees it as a partnership (Tom Riddle does not - he sees Lucius as his servant. His favourite pet Death Eater in fact). He is opportunistic and self-serving - Draco and Narcissa too. Tom’s most loyal are Bella and Barry Crouch Jnr who are emotionally invested in Tom. Lucius is not. I’m sure that if Dumbledore had given Lucius in OTTP an opportunity to both defect and a position of authority/ability to remain neutral (for Draco at least) in the Order’s revolutionised Ministry (that would be more muggle-born friendly) then no doubt Lucius would back it. Lucius wants power and the safety of his family. They are his two primary motivations.

I wouldn't really say betrayed Voldemort. More like abandoned. Betrayed would imply that Lucius actively helped in Voldemort's defeat.

Good video on Lucius mate that was really enjoyable to listen to someones view on him, he was always one of those characters who was a total dirtbag to begin with but soon as he realised no one was invincible or safe around his "master" talk about a long time to be humbled. Imo he was just a coward, fair enough voldemort was unusually cruel after his one failure at the department of mysterys albiet a very important one you wouldnt expect him to treat especially someone like lucius in the manner he did, it was more Draco that had grown out of listening to his dads bs and realised what was right and wrong and that showed in his last scene at the station 😢 i was around 12 when the first harry potter came out and my teacher at primary school actually read us that book so the story is quite sentimental 😂 nice to see theres still people out there talking about it to this day. Good video man

I think that they also had to focus on the father love in the movie that is something I missed although it was al over the series as seen by Lupin and sirius who kind of took that role for James so that Harry would have a father figure and even Dumbledore did just that but the one who was the biggest was Lucius he did what people for his wife but mostly for his son he loved him more than enything I think it is a pity that it is in the last book but not in the movie they sud have shown that more in the film I the book you really see that he did what he did to save his son and make sure that he is save and lives

Somehow I don't really feel Lucius really betrayed Voldemort, at least not in action...IMO, Narcissa for sure did, and technically Draco did too when he pretended not to recognize Harry at Malfoy Manor. Also, he didn't leave before Voldemort died; when the fight went inside the mess hall, Lucius and Narcissa were there, but they were not even trying to fight they were just looking for Draco. And once the battle was over, the book says the 3 Malfoys were still there, looking as if they were unsure they were supposed to be there with everyone else

Lucius: Boss, we think we have Potter. Voldemort: Think? Go on. Lucius: We definitely have that Mudblood girl and the red headed stepchild. We can't tell if it's Potter because we can't recognize his face. Voldemort: Aren't those three always together? Lucius: What am I, their autobiographer? Voldemort: Careful, Lucius. I'm leaning toward renaming you "Meg" as it is. Is it Potter or not? Lucius: We don't know. Voldemort: Why must I surround myself with fricking idiots? Lucius: M'Lord? Voldemort: Shut up, Meg.

I think it is truly fucked up that Voldemort giving Draco the mission to kill Dumbledore was a lose-lose situation for Draco. Had he cowarded and failed, he would be punished by Voldemort by being tortured and most likely killed. Had he accomplished his mission, as the now (known by Voldemort) owner of the Elder Wand, he would be killed so Voldemort could become it's owner.

I would say it was because Voldemort was loosing strength and his position was getting weaker. Lucius couldn't gloat about his prestigious status within Death Eater ranks after Prophecy was destroyed. He certainly didn't do it because he saw that Voldemort does evil things. His rank was lower than it was in the First Wizarding War. He hated muggle borns and half bloods. His ideology was extremely harmful. He was scared for his family so he turned his back on Voldemort. Voldemort was unforgiving. I bet that he enjoyed humiliating Malfoys. Giving Draco that assignment, taking Manor and snapping Lucius's wand. He wanted Draco to befriend Harry as it would benefit his status. Draco didn't have to pretend his he didn't recognize Harry just like Narcissa didn't have to lie to Voldemort. But they did for each other. I believe that their actions redeemed them at this time Narcissa and Draco. Narcissa wanted her son to be safe. That's all she ever cared about. So protecting Harry allowed her to go to the Castle. Lucius knew that Voldemort was angry with him. Tom Riddle's diary got into Ginny Weasley's hands. Basilisk was dead. So Lucius did contribute to Voldemort's defeat he just didn't know it.

I believe this is linked to a theme Rowling was considering pursuing in her series but, for some reason, she failed to develop. I believe in you can see a ghost of this abandoned theme in the books & even the movies. It is also the reason behind her unfortunate play. I believe she originally wanted to cast the story as a kind of tragedy b/c Harry made a mistake requesting to be placed in Gryffindor, he was supposed to be in Slytherin & to become friends w/ Draco & to be mentored by Snape. Much of the suffering & difficulty of the struggle was the result of this mistake. Harry was to realize this in the end. The end was only about defeating Voldemort but in redeeming the Malfoys, or at least Draco. Draco was not supposed to just slink off in a craven way, he was supposed to dramatically go over to Harry's side & save his family. I don't know why Rowling abandoned that theme but if you think about it, it is there, review the details & I think you'll see it too.
