I'd say one of my favorite moments from him in the film is the battle in the pass against the bikers. While telling the others to clear the rocks, he and his entourage commandeer the one vehicle that can get past the rocks and continue the pursuit on their own. I find it pretty terrifying in some respects.

That whole scene, imo, is one of the most important in the movies. It's the first serious brush between the protagonists and Immortan since Furiosa went AWOL. The camera work is so good, the track that plays (Brothers in Arms - Extended Edition by Junkie XL) is perfect for it, the stunt work is top tier too. The scene is so fast paced but desn't miss a single chance to add minor details or symbolism. The scene where the plough drops to use sand to snuff the flames is both symbolic of everyone holding their breath, even the truck, in a tense moment but that's also when the trucks engine really started to fail in the movies leading to it's demise by the end.

I remember perfectly when I went to watch this film in theaters with my father, we were passing by it and saw that it was showing amd he told "Mad Max? The old one?" And I told him that it was a new, so we stopped to watch it. It's been one of the best experiences I've ever had in the cinema and it's also one of the few that made me fall in love with cinema, every action scene was so thrilling and had us to the edge of our seats. It’s great because the movie doesn’t treat you like a child by explaining every part of itself. The world feels lived in and real to every character. You would never stop somebody walking on the sidewalk and explain to them who you are and why you’re in the place you’re in. Every line in Fury Road feels like it would be said if a camera wasn’t rolling. Which makes it incredibly immersive.

I have to admit, I liked Fury Road more than any of the other Mad Max movies. The first one feels more like a revenge driven cop movie a la Charles Bronson's Death Wish, the second feels appropriately post-apocalyptic but the costuming was comically awful (which I suppose was part of the point, in a real post-apocalypse not everyone will look badass), and the third fell into the 80's action movie pitfall of suddenly needing to cater to a kid audience, much like Return of the Jedi. Fury Road is the first time the series felt appropriately post-apocalyptic and operatic, appropriately dramatic with all the right flair and excitement without being dulled by the "kid's movie" standards that diminishes the hard edges of the harsh world following the apocalypse.

Yeah, I cracked up at Lord Humongous' entrance wearing his gimp suit. But have you seen the outfits of real biker gangs? Some pretty outrageous styles out there. Thunderdome is very 80's action style but it's still pretty iconic. A ruthless town with a gladiator pit. I don't think it suffered at all from being a bit sanded down. But yes, this movie is the best evolution of the trilogy.

Everything to the directorial decisions to makeup and sound, the insane modded retro cars and amazing writing that tells a compelling story with very few words, and action that more than justifies itself. To me it's a perfect movie, doing exactly what it set out to do, and I really hope Furiosa comes to fruition, as I know it and the cancelled sequel went through a tumultuous production.

Immortan Joe is a man who saw the death of the old world, and instead throwing up his hands and saying "too bad", he did everything in his power to save the remnants. He has water. He has vegetables. He has a vault of books. He is desperately trying to have a son without deformations. He already has two sons. One strong but dumb, one weak but clever. If he just let the water from the tank run, he would be the hero of the movie.

I really do believe Immortan Joe is the real hero of the movie, and Furiosa and Max are desperate for a life that cannot exist in this universe. The first question I have is where is Joes water comming from? Is it a natural aquafer or a limited pool? The movie seems to imply that the green place was because the water used to flow naturely. The water obviously needs to be pumped up. What is the machinery? Is the pumping done by the war boys? If so, it makes sence they would only pump for a few minutes a day. His eldest son, (telescope) seems to be the natural leader as he spots the problem immediatly. He would have to make his brother Rictus disappear. Even Furiosa had the ability to rise from a captured slave to the position of trusted courier. This proves that Immortan Joes society promoted ability over blood. He gave the war boys, with their half lives, hope. Belief in Valhalla. Purpose for their pain, and the promise of a reward afterwards. Immortan Joe is the REAL HERO.

Man I love this movie. In the current age of cinema where action is pushed to the limits (1000s of superheros in battle, the Fast and Furious crew launching a car into freaking space), it's hard to get excited about anything. Stuff that would've blown the minds of audiences a few decades ago is now just "Yep, that was cool..." This movie brought back that excitement though, made me feel like a kid again. I remember my face beaming and my jaw dropping seeing how awesome the stunts and action are. One of my all-time favourites now.

This was the best of the Mad Max series. Please no sequel. Sci Fi movies are usually salary capped at 3.5/4 stars due to plotholes but this was a perfect depiction of 50 years after the big one! 4****

The problem with those who survived the war and now live in the wasteland is their only thoughts are about survival to make it through that day and having no ambition to rebuild civilization in there own image. Joe is not evil, he may appear to be but he knows what must be done in order to bring a new world into the wasteland.

exactly he is actualy more merciful than the kings or general people of antiquity, in pagan europe it was cutsom to just left deformed children die in the forrest the spartan famously chucked them off a cliff. he is the actual good charatker here. he is a tyrant yes but it needs tyrant to keep thos esavages in check. also an heir is most important for his peoples stability of they might decent into chaos without a stable succession.

I don’t find either Immortan Joe or Toecutter over the top. I loved both performances and liked that there were no huge monologues. You can see logic and intelligence in both of them. RIP Hugh.

Immortal Joe is a pretty realistic bad guy. I can argue, he is not that evil at all. He just want's his wives back. Can you blame him? He doesn't kill peope, we don't really see him punish anyone. He didn't kill that old woman that helped the wives escape. He is more of a dictator.

@@CoolGobyFish totally agree. He’s not sadistic or evil. Everything he does is logical. I think you’re right he’s a dictator and a sociopath. He wants the power but he’s not needlessly killing people. Same as Toecutter (apart from the killing of Jim Goose).

My favorite lil bit of character detail is when the Bullet Farmer and The People Eater are talking to Joe about “we have lost many war boys and this trip has put a serious dent in their finances”, it shows Joe as more of a human being, his emotion is clouding his judgments, he’s mind is scattered at the loss of his wives. Great writing.

Immortan Joe and Aunty Entity were someing more than the wild pirates that Lord Humongous' and ToeCutter's gangs were. As ruthless as Immortan and Aunty were, they were creating something much more organized than a group of marauders. Their towns had laws, tradition, culture, and even trade with other forts. Barbaric as it was, they were self-sustaining civilizations. Those Furiosa's age and under appears to be born into the apocalypse, with no previous concept of the old world like Max, Immortan, and Aunty have.

I live near where some of Furiosa was filmed. Some of the vehicles (trucks, buggies, motorcycles) being trucked into the site look awesome, can't wait for the next movie. This site being used for Furiosa was the same site used for the plane scene in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Unfortunately all the sand has been mined.
