Thank you! I've been searching for this kind of content for years ! At last instead of going for rule of thumb numbers, I have the tools to analyse my deckbuilding. Feels to me that you should explain hypergeometric probabilities and how it should affect your deck building at some point.

I always feel that if you can't ramp or don't have as much access to ramp (like mono blue or red), add as much draw to balance it out so you're at least able to go through your deck as fast as possible and hit lands per turn.

I learnt the leason in the hard way. I upgraded my Yeva, Herald of Nature adding consistent draw; so the number of times I run out of gas has reduced dramatically. 9:31 you nailed with that expression, only now I see I used to play with a pile of cards :D

I also view ramp as a way to remove land from the deck. For example with land tax, I will constantly get more land then I can play and just discard the extra at the end. This lets me decrease the chance of seeing land on the draw.

I tend to prefer the one-time draw effects over multi-turn ones the more aggressive a deck is, since it wants to end the game in fewer turns than others and gives you more cards up front. The more sustainable methods also often require being drawn early get the maximum value out of them, where was burst draw consistently gets you a certain amount no matter what turn you play them on. I also consider effects that dig you deeper in the deck to a usable card to be draw, even if it's not usually considered as such. Stuff like the Hideaway Lands or Turntimber Symbiosis. ...All that said, I always find it tough putting more than 8-10 card draw effects in my decks, since... often times I find myself having to take a turn off play those draw spells and not advance my game plan. These days, I just usually try to make do by layering it onto other aspects of the deck, like say on a Ramp Piece like Selvala, Heart of the Wilds. Maybe the solution is to just play cheaper draw spells, but I'm not always in colors that have such luxury on a card less than $50. So, I just try to include as many redundancies in the deck's other aspects as possible to make up for that. ...Am I crazy for doing so?

I see. Now I can use this knowledge to help me with color identities I don't build very well. I'm used to mono Black, Golgari, and Jund deck building, but all of them are just adding colors to make Black more consistent for my win conditions. Now I can venture out and explore deck building for mono Green, Gruul, and Naya. I've been struggling to understand why my previous patterns aren't working and I'm discovering I'm not grasping the fundamentals I instinctually used with my preferred colors.
@hanschristopherson80562 жыл бұрын
I usually play green decks because your playing a lot of cheap ramp spells that cost three or less mana you usually want your card draw to fit into the four+ slot so that you can refill your hand

Another tip is that, in general, I've found you should prioritize "guaranteed" draw over "strong conditional" draw (I.e. stuff like Read the Bones or Harmonize over Grim Haruspex or Coastal Piracy). Stuff like a Shamanic Revelation or Pact of the Serpent is fantastic... until you topdeck it after a boardwipe and you have 2 other cards in hand, or you play an Esper Sentinel against a tribal deck and Nikya deck
@xxhellspawnedxx2 жыл бұрын
I don't know about that, I'll be honest. At the very least, you should have some persistent draw in your deck, but maybe you can mix it with a few one-time effects, but in my experience we're talking an advantage that is measured in thousands of games, if even that. Furthermore, most one-time draw effects are rather pricy for their effect, compared to keeping a persistent draw effect for a hand-full of turns. I feel like decks running nothing but one-time effects tend to stumble and fall flat on their faces more often than decks with majority persistent draw effects though. The few spellslinger decks I've built with a strong majority of the draw effects being instants and sorceries ran pretty much like shit, compared to their counterparts in my collection. They'd draw less than half of what my proper decks (using majority persistent draw) would. Now, it might be because I built them on a budget, IDK, but still, permanents trounces spells when it comes to recurring value, if simply for the reason that it costs you one card in hand to slap down a Phyrexian Arena that may very well last you for the entire game, whereas it will cost you 5-10 drawing spell cards to achieve them same amount of draw.

Great video! I’ve definitely been neglecting the draw element of my Commander builds, and it shows. I have a Niv-Mizzet Reborn, which I think gets away with very little draw because it leans hard on the Commander’s EtB (which gets around draw disruption like Notion Thief and Narset, Parter of Veils). My Light-Paws similarly can skate on limited draw sources, because I’m tutoring out tons of auras. However, my Thrasta, Sarulf, and (embarrassingly) Orvar have all suffered from stall-outs, and it’s easy to see why when I look back at the lists. I tend to prefer permanents with draw effects, though for Sarulf specifically I made a point of loading up on one-shot draws; in order to get the most out of a repeating board wipe, I wanna make sure I’m scrubbing as little of my stuff as possible. Like you said, there is no hard and fast rule… but it’s critical that a deck’s allocating *enough* space for fundamentals like draw, however that’s accessed.

10:48 Are you kidding? After watching these kinds of videos for the last month, now every deck I build is repetitive. 34 lands, 1 commander, 5 board wipes, 10 draw, 10 ramp, 10 targeted removal, 30 cards on-theme. The only reason I don't have the same 69 cards out of 100 in every deck is commander-based color restrictions.

Im not so sure Rystic Study should be banned, since you have the choice to give or not card advantage. The "Do you pay the one" problem was solved in our playgroup with "I will draw cards each magic you cast, unless you show you paid the tax". With this, there isnt one annoying person repeating the same sentence over and over, but players really thinking if they should pay the tax or not.

You got into it at the end but no card draw is not the most important it's the mana base that's most important. Spells can't be cast on time without enough of the right kinds of mana.

I keep hearing this, how is it good to draw 25 cards turn one when you only get one land drop? This is a sincere question, why would I want an insane amount of cards sooner than later when I can't fire em off?
@pandaman22342 жыл бұрын
@@anthonyconvery4331 because having a hand of the 7 best of the top 34 cards of your library on turn 2 is, in the vast majority of cases, going to be a lot stronger then your hand having only had access to the top 9 cards of your library on turn 2.
@anthonyconvery43312 жыл бұрын
Oh okay, plus your already dropping another land by then and maybe an artifact... so your potentially using up some of the stuff by your next turn ... I'm getting it. Thanks for clarification, I just wasn't able to understand why I would lose so much coming out the gate but the argument is no let's control the randomness a little bit more.
@henlohenlo689 Жыл бұрын
the only deck i use card draw in is combo deck along with tutors. like for example my painter servant and grind stone combo deck. that combo wins the game the rest of the deck is card draw tutors and counter spells. outside of combo decks i dont use card draw very much. card draw is strong against control decks weak against aggro. so if facing control deck u may need less removal and thus card draw helps u get ur combo sooner. the combo deck i use though gets combo onto field turn 4 or 5 or 6 relatively commonly so even vs aggro the card draw works.
@ryans.58432 жыл бұрын
It's not 1%, it's 1/cards in deck. So it starts with the first card you draw to begin the game 1.01%(1/99) and every card after that goes up in % from 1.01% to 100% at 1 card left in deck.
@TheSpiritombsableye2 жыл бұрын

I loved the video overall, but I just can't agree with the assessment of Rhystic Study. I see rhystic study as a stax piece. Are Thalia guardian of thraben, Wrynn Wingmare or glowride banworthy cards?.. No! Because all they do is stax players a little bit. Why should Rhystic study be any different? It's never gonna hurt me if I pay the one. Rhystic is only a problem when players are not sensible enough to pay the one every time and thus turning RS into problem.
@CommanderMechanic2 жыл бұрын
It’s ok to view it as a stax piece but it’s not TREATED as a stax piece, and you can’t control how people in pods treat it. One person not paying is enough to turn it into a problem for everyone
@felipefspb2 жыл бұрын
@@CommanderMechanic I agree with you on that one! However, when I can...I try to politely convince the other players to pay for the tax as well. But I can see how it sometimes can spiral out of control if one player decides to start not paying for RS.
@liammanning83342 жыл бұрын
I don't agree about rhystic study. There are much worse problems tha good card draw....looking at tutors! I run about 10 rhystic studies in blue decks. And first hand can say the decks atill.feel.diverse Card draw is simply card draw. It is a way to play the part of your deck that is unique. Tutors are a much worse problem leading to boring repetitive gameplay.
