As a kid I didn’t really like or care for Majora’s Mask because I didn’t really understand what was going on or what to do. As time passed and I got older I started appreciating it more for what it really is. The darkest, saddest, deepest, and strangest Zelda experience of all and it’s absolutely amazing.

The "Remake" of Majora's Mask was, in my opinion, a huge downgrade from the original game. Not only are the bosses far less enjoyable to fight (as you mentioned in the video), but the swimming mechanics became way more of a chore and also the art direction looked goofy compared to the original, which had an art style that much more closely matched the tone of the game. I am glad that Nintendo finally brought the original version to modern players with its port to the Switch.

@@traviscunningham7062 Whilst I think the downsides of the 3DS remake (use that term loosely here) are overblown, I do wonder how Greco made such a good job of the OOT 3DS port, yet fell short with MM, I suspect they were a little over their heads, and Nintendo gave the leash some extra slack after their stellar OOT port, this proved a mistake as they ended up downgrading the gameplay, keep in mind MM 3DS is still a 95% score game, its just that the OG MM N64 game is a 98% score game.

@@Wobble2007 They're not overblown, MM was the last Zelda that demanded some creativity from the player in order to beat the bosses. You get an arrow? Oldulwa blocks quite often. Fire Arrow? Its purpose is to melt Goht. Ice arrow? it helps with the fish. Light Arrow? maybe does extra damage on Twinmold but its not the solution. The bosses and the challenge and fun they provided are REMOVED with the boring modern zelda boss design... YOU HAVE THIS LARGE ARSENAL OF ALL KINDS OF ITEMS AND NOW YOU JUST USE THE ONE THEY DEMAND YOU USE ON THE BOSS... NOTHING ELSE... MM was a masterclass of making use of all your gear, Uldulwa would summon flesh eating bugs, but they ignore you if youre deku link. You can grab bomb plants which theyre attracted to but throw them at the boss. You got to be CREATIVE and EXPIREMENT, something modern zelda hates. Deku links movement is heavily nerfed and this ruins the movement mechanics and the fun out of using him as well as levels hes made for like the deku palace... now you CANT just go as you please, you cant even come back from the deku butler cave because of the speed nerf. Zora Links swimming is utterly removed and youre punished for trying to go fast... the Bay and more were MADE for the swimming and you'd learn it much like deku link. Scores mean NOTHING, they're made by influncers and game journalists, journalists who buy and trade favors for games as we seen with Zoe Quinn, and theyre done by people who have no business playing a game as we can see someone take 12 minutes to complete the cuphead tutorial... These arent people who's opinions we should care about and theyre already bias.

I imagine the brainstorming sessions for Majora’s Mask were something like “what if at the start of Ocarina we gave Link bad acid instead of a fairy?” and that ended up being the perspective of the game. It’s a masterpiece but it left me emotionally scarred as a kid 😂

No way they ruined boss battles like that in the remake I read about it but i thought they only added shiny textures not a whole Ganon eye when they are down.. In the original one it felt so good to not know exactly what you are doing cause as soon as you get three hits you somewhat know what to do and as soon as you beat it you put the controller down and scream YESSS

I would call it unfair to say that it has "only 4 dungeons". While technically yes that is true, there are some parts you could call "mini-dungeons" that are mandatory, such as the deku palace, the pirate fortress, the castle in Ikana and probably some other small areas that I'm forgetting. On top of that, there are optional areas like the houses of Skulltulas. If you consider this, plus the fact that the four "main dungeons" are also harder than the ones in Ocarina I would say that the game definitely has close to the same amount of dungeon-crawling that Ocarina did. Maybe not QUITE as much, but like you said, the number of side quests and the more intricate overworld make up for it. IMO both games are of equal quality but for different reasons.

the biggest shortcoming of _Majora’s Mask_ is the lack of a proper final dungeon… and micro-dungeons it does have are optional. a final dungeon based upon a time mechanic would’ve been perfect, and maybe somehow Clock Town itself gets transformed into the dungeon?

I played the original in high school, and considered this better than OOT. Still do. A lot of people were turned off by the re-used assets, but I've always been more of a mechanics player, and the game delivered on the new options, puzzles, time gimmick etc. It was also interesting to see Link go through an adventure that was pretty different from his usual formula. No presence of Zelda, Hyrule, Gannon etc. A few games have done this too like Link's Awakening or Minish Cap, and those were good entries as well. I also appreciated Majora's Mask simply having faster menu navigation. I did get fierce deity's mask eventually, but in first playthrough I didn't. My friend told me the final boss required it, but that seemed dubious to me so I had to try w/o. I won, but it was certainly more challenging than usual Zelda game fights w/o it. Probably still easier than some NES Zelda fights/rooms...IMO once you know both fights, a room full of blue darknuts with stuff shooting at you in NES Zelda is harder to deal with than Majora's phases w/o deity mask, and other games were harder still. All in all, given the short timeframe the devs had, cutting resources they'd have used in making new assets and focusing those resources into making the game play better + use unique mechanics despite was a good move. It might have been a hard choice in the moment...I rarely see games that make this tradeoffs (usually re-used assets only happens in shovelware) before or in the decades since...but I don't think this would have been the great entry in the series it became if the devs didn't take that tradeoff. An X factor in this is that in addition to the new mechanics and puzzles, they managed to do an excellent job with the game's atmosphere. Even more than most other Zelda games, Link feels like a hero in this one...carrying his time powers to eventually reverse the misfortune in every area. You see the effects directly, in a way the other games don't always show. Creativity overcoming constraints really shines in this game.

MM is the best structured zelda game. It has some of the classic story and dungeon structure of ALttP, OOT, and TP. It also has some of the more openness of BotW and TotK. The actual things that sets it apart as the best zelda game are: - that at any time you can go off the beaten path and immerse yourself in the plentiful number of side quests, which offer actually useful rewards unlike most zelda games (Especially TP) - The transformation masks, making it feel like the game has 5 playable characters and extremely unique characters. - the sheer uniqueness of its world, story, characters, and time mechanics.

One of my favorite trivia facts about the game is that the development was supposed to be cancelled by Miyamoto but Aonuma insisted on finishing the game (which was in its absolutely earliest stages only) and Shigeru gave him ONE YEAR to finish the game before he would pull him and his entire team off to another project and scrap the entire progress if it wasnt ready for releqse. Thats also the main reason why there is a bunch of filler content and also the three day cycle - it stretches the game out tremendously.

You know, that makes a lot of sense. (that playing this zelda title before playing some of the others can entirely ruin it). I played it right when it came out, after having played OOT a lot, and it felt like such an incredible game. But part of why it was so good, in my opinion, was that it wasn't hand-holdy. Instead, it set up a lot of very tricky business. At the get-go, you have to figure out how to undo a curse set upon you even to be human, and I just loved that. I couldn't even figure it out, I ended up looking up the answer, but I still loved it. It's like a puzzle box that is meant to be frustrating. Also, throughout the game, it relies upon mechanics I already learned from OOT. In that sense, it was all but a continuation of it. the original NES zelda and then the gameboy one were both massively hard too, for me, so I was well prepared for Majora's mask to be difficult. and, as usual, I ran into several road blocks, but was expecting them. That was the nature of Zelda for me. puzzleboxes that require the right input to proceed, on top of an immersive world.

"Only to end up in a world where nobody knows who he is or what he's accomplished." That happens in the ending to OoT, Majora's Mask just makes it explicit that the ending sucked for Link. Link is sent back in time to a world where he would never get any recognition for saving Hyrule, his one consistant companion leaves for no reason, and he can't unlearn that he's not a Kokiri, so he doesn't belong in the place he spent his entire life. That is awful and traumatic. It makes sense Link would become Zelda's companion because she's the only one who would believe a single thing he says, otherwise Link would be called insane for telling anybody about his experiences.

I have never gotten as pissed off over a video game release than I did with the 3DS demaster of this game. The 64 version was one of the greatest titles ever made, we begged Nintendo for a remaster in the same vein as OoT 3D, and they totally botched it. They borked the mechanics, gimped the gameplay, and needlessly shuffled stuff around. The only saving grace was the updated visuals were better for the most part, but they even screwed that up in some locations. The fanmade restoration patch for MM3D finally made it a viable way to play, but still couldn't completely undo the damage.

I’ve played both versions, and aside from the Zora mask changes, I’d prefer the remake in every way I can think of. I want to make a case for the boss changes. For Odolwa, the original fight was no more interactive than the remake. The only real difference is the way in which you stun him, which I find more fun being the Deku mask’s abilities. For Goht, I’m not entirely sure why, but the remake makes him far far less annoying to fight. You knock him down multiple times, can get a quick stun will a well executed jump, and the fight doesn’t feel tedious like the N64 version does. Gyorg is much better in the remake in my opinion. It actually feels like a proper boss fight, and while it can be annoying at times, it’s way better and more interesting than just hitting it with an arrow to stun it. Lastly, Twinmold. I’ll admit, the original was less annoying, but the reason the remake version is annoying is because of a bug, so I can forgive it. Basically, 10 hits is supposed to knock him down, but due to a bug, the counter for that resets when he burrows into the ground. Aside from that though, I like the remake version better. Sure you don’t get to use your sword on it, but having the sword in giant form feels boring to me. Meanwhile, the 3DS version has you beat the crap out of the red one, which feels even better after having had to deal with the blue one while being normal size. Also I like that the bosses have eye weak points. Makes them ironically seem stronger because your attacks don’t work anywhere else on them. It leads to more interesting interactions with bosses. Take Gyorg, with how you have to make him suck in a mine. Much like the two bosses before it, it makes you explore the abilities of the appropriate transformation mask. That’s another reason why I much prefer the 3DS Odolwa fight; you actually need the Deku mask to beat him. While I do miss the speed of N64 Deku and Zora forms, the overwhelming amount of positives the 3DS version brings makes me prefer it over the original any and every time I want to play this incredible game again.

"I prefer the remake" ew... The orignal Odolwa fight had crazy interactivity compared to modern... You had flesh eating bugs, that would ignore link if he was a deku. You could lure the bugs who were attracted to fire away from you with using the bomb plants. You had an epic sword fight where the enemy would shield as well as attack. You had to keep trying to keep the pressure on to prevent him from finishin a chant. You could stun him with the deky bubble. You could attack with the deku spin. Deku nuts from a distance, arrows from a distance and he'd likely block it if you did the timing wrong... THE NEW VERSION??? he doesnt even react to you, he doesnt get smart with you, he doesnt change tactics, HE STANDS THERE DOING NOTHING "the remake makes Goht far less annoying to fight" so clearly you never learned how to do the goron roll... and were bad at it. like you are at video games... oh no... a boss fight was "tedious" dear me... how dare a boss fight be difficult... Gyorg as well, again you seemingly lack all creativity... you have an entire arsenal of options on you but you had that much difficulty? nah nah, its not about using an arrow, its using an arrow correctly, and theres yet more to it and far more options. "using fists instead of my sword is boring" thats a personal issue, like much the rest. "i enjoy the overuse of eyeball weakpoints in zelda games" yikes... "overwhelming positives in the 3ds version" XD

I tried playing MM a decade ago and never quite got around to finishing the game. What always bothered me about it was the constant time pressure, I want to take my time and think through, not feel a constant pressure to get things done on the clock (reminds me too much of real work). I don't like Stardew Valley for the same reason. I might try it again at some point now that the Switch emulator lets me easily rewind and create save states and take the pressure off.

Majoras mask can easily mess with any zelda game my opinion Majoras mask has life in the game everyone has a routine as example in oot the cuccuo lady has only one activity giving link something after getting the cuccuos back but in majora's mask her name is anju and the fact that they gave her a name makes it even more great and the fact she does 24/7 something and when link interfere her circle makes it great anju tells us more about her life and more Another example the romani /cremia quest cremia struggles to even managing the ranch the Gorman brothers are sabotaging cremias business by blocking the road with a rock and the thing is that when you interfere her timeline romani asks if she can drink the chateau romani wich is milk that makes you sleepy and has alcoholic effects and she knows what will happen so she can't do anything not just that cremia also loves kinda kafei but cremia prefers her friendship more than anything so she let's anju have kafei even her mother says that kafei and cremia would match more than him and anju is crazy And the Evolution link does in every part of termina is just great he changes the future many times in a row and sees how all of them are depressed and wants to leave clock town as example the mail /post mann he doenst knows anything if he wants to fulfill his duty or escape if you interfere at kafeis quest a bit and give the mailman at the last day in the last 5 minutes the mail he will deliver it fast to kafeis mother in the bar and she says that she will stay and she says that link should flee too she cares about clock town and her people so much i just love it I like somethings of the remasterd version of it on the 3ds Clock town got expanded in the south of clock town even there Easter eggs in clock town to find This game is without a doubt the best zelda game into representing a persons life and many more things are here to see Darmani the III as example you evolve from a scrub to a hero even tough they died they need to comfort with the fact there beloved died wich is depressing and not just even that this game has one of the best things in the whole franchise wich is character even there so many hidden speeches as example when you put on kafeis mask and go to romani in the house she tells that cremia secretly loves kafei Not just that if you do the cremia quest after you got the mask sometimes you get a hug from cremia The only thing that is annoying is the circle of the time wich got fixed in mm 3ds remake wich i appreciate more But there's so much life in this game not even botw or totk can make that real and that's a fact definitely for me S+ rank also i like the game so much i also appreciate you're opinions but somebody who said c+ is completely wrong majora's mask let's you dive in into a world of miracle and darkness wich let's you discover the sorrow of the people and interfering into there life i only say majora's mask is my fav game of the zelda series

20:12 when you open Romany ranch, it also ask you to get a powder keg, so if you already got 1 before, why getting 1 at the ikana castle should be an issue?, besides, you don't need to get it from the goron on clock town, you can also get powder kegs from the big goron on the goron village, also, when you get the bomb mask the old lady tells you to go visit the bomb shop, and that's where you can see the goron and speak to him, and he'll tell you that he can sell you a bomb powerful enough but he is not gonna give it to a kid, that is your clue to talk to him as a goron

Great video, dude. The N64 Zelda games hold such a special place in my heart. Majora’s Mask is not necessarily the best Zelda game, but it’s the darkest and the most unique which automatically makes it my favorite.

Love this game, my favorite zelda game, and definitely like the original N64 version best, i am glad the remake introduced the game to new players though, despite the changes, some were improvements like the bombers notebook, but ya some were downgrades like swimming and bosses, but on a side note i don't mind fetch quests,

Me playing on my mobile phone using an emulator couldn't finish it because my game crashes everytime at the end when the moon is coming down and you have to play the ocarina. This was my first zelda game and last sadly. But now that i have 3ds im gonna play it again.

Another way this game shies away from the standard Zelda formula is that it's entirely possible to complete the game without ever upgrading Link's sword. Yes, the Razor Sword and Gilded Sword both make the game much easier (even if the Razor Sword is a waste of resources), but you can actually beat Majora with just the Kokiri Sword. I can't think of any other games in the series, where it's possible to complete it without ever getting a better sword

If you have a homebrewed 3DS you can play the Majora's Mask Restoration Patch which IMO makes it the definitive version of the game. It fixes all the weird stuff the 3DS version brings while keeping the actual QoL it brought and even a bit more. I highly recommend it.

I feel like Majoras is enjoying some heavy nostalgia at this point. Bros, we are bias. We loved this game when we were kids and now we make and like content praising MM. It's not THAT great of a game. I love it tho. Might seem like I'm talking in contradicting myself but ya know... Subjectively it's a masterpiece. Objectively, not so much.

What are the objective things that make it not a masterpiece? I'm asking from a place of genuine curiosity, it becomes tiring how often people use the subjective opinion shield to deflect objective criticism. I love seeing others' perspectives, and I especially love when those perspectives look at things objectively. I even have to check myself sometimes.

I agree, it is tiring. But anyway, I'll keep this painfully short, as in I'm not gonna flesh out my arguments too much. Just know that these are coming from a place of love for the game. Three day system was poorly executed. Too much repetition. Heavy reliance on side quests, that eventually lead to a lackluster price. The collectables and the items, especially most of the masks are somewhat redundant. Temples and dungeons are great, but such a scarce "commodity". Atmosphere is great, and the story is wonderfully scary and thought provoking. Especially in the sense, that it can capture the attention of a child as well as an adult. I am fully aware of the harsh deadlines and pressure the team was in at the time; to put out something quickly as a sequel to the massive success of OOT. With that in mind, I think they did a wonderful job at Nintendo. Still, the massive hype around old video games is clearly augmented by nostalgia. It's completely understandable, but it has the power to turn criticism into praise, if you perform some mental gymnastics on the subject at hand. That is what bugs me sometimes when watching these, even tho my heart agrees with them most of the time. :D Ugh, I have spoken. Cheers from Finland! @@NintendoSunnyDee

It can’t be just nostalgia. That’s like saying people only like chess because they’re nostalgic for old times. There’s something about the game that is quality. It probably has to do with the determination of the game develops into making something timeless.

I don't necessarily buy the analogy to chess, since my argument tackled the very thing that, I suppose, you described as "quality". I agree that it has aged very well, and definitely one of the main reasons for that is the theme, which goes over your head as a child and rewards you if you stuck around to play it as an adult. BUT, that is my 5 cents on the topic, I personally think it is a very special game and agree with you a lot. @@axileus9327

24:40 funny. For me it's the opposite. Majora's mask was my first Zelda game, and I never finished any other. I played the original, Link's awakening, Ocarina of Time and Minish Cap. I never finished them. MM is the only one that suits me I guess. In fact, the game that I played and reminded me the most of it (and that I finished multiple times) is Dark Souls 3. I guess I'm not a Zelda fan after all. ^^
