Arteta had this problem with arsenal a while back. How did he solve it? Got rid of the lazy first teamers and looked to the academy and the market to replace them. This is when martinelli, saka, simth rowe, nketiah etc were introduced. We have mejbri, mainoo, amad, pellistri, garnacho etc. Time for ten hag to consider following in artetas footsteps.

And you will still have some Arsenal fans talk about how he didnt give chances to Pepe. And I am mentioning him, because he is exactly they player Rashford is when talking about overall attitude on the pitch. Both can score amazing goals, but both are such liability when the team needs to defend. They just throw their arms in the air and slowly jog back. It took Arteta very little time to realize Pepe will never be a player he wants.

Rashford is one of the most overrated players in the league. He has purple patches where he looks like a world beater, but never sustains that level and the norm is more like his performance in this match; he wants to run at goal, but doesn't always make the best decision when he does so, and he offers very little defensively.

How to turn it around? Ten Hag actually did it slightly during the game and it technically worked...but was too late. Introduce Youth products who have something to prove and give a damn about the shirt and their performances because they know that they don't have a guaranteed starting place. Hannibal was such an improvement on McTominay and Dan Gore could also play in that space as another alternative. Kobe Mainoo was going to be a starter in the midfield this season as he had impressed so much in training and pre season, his injury is the only reason McTominay is still at the club

Firing Ten Hag would be the biggest cop out here. Are his tactics perfect? No. Have all his decisions been correct? No. But the biggest problem here is the same as it's always been at the club. One decent season and the players think that's good enough, and that somehow this season this will just come to them without them needing to work hard. It's the same way thing we've seen for over 10 years. I'm sick and tired of managers being blamed for everything and the players getting off scot-free. I don't care if we finish 8th this season. I want the club and every fan to back Ten Hag and for him to lay down the law extremely clearly, either work hard or get out. There's been a lot of criticism saying he's been too harsh towards certain players, I don't think he's been harsh enough. I'd rather watch a team of reserves give everything and lose than this lot half ass it.

I nolonger think the coach lacks in tactics, he is trying everything and the players aren’t responding. United is truly in a mess, if you look at that kind of performance, it speaks volumes, noone wants to work too hard while other mates are walking, yu can see Bruno there trying to close down 3 people alone. Can Rashford tell us what really bothers him, he walks and looks uninterested in a United shirt, it’s shocking and he gets minutes anyway

Why do people think of football like its FIFA? We can't just copy and paste City's tactics. They have specific players for the way that Guardiola wants to play. City also have probably the best coach ever in Guardiola, and very good coaches like Juan Lillo to implement that style. United play this way because that's they way Ten Hag knows and trusts. We currently lack wingers, so Ten Hag decided a 442 diamond might work v brighton, and we were good for 20 minutes. We got beat by brighton because De Zerbi was able to counter Ten Hag's tactics, and Ten Hag didn't have a way to respond to the change in Brighton's shape. It happens. Anyone whos played football knows its impossible to press/sprint all the time. However, as a team, or even as individuals you've got to be able to sense when danger is around the corner and spring to action. In the case of the 2nd goal, United felt they had Brighton contained, but this was far from the case. When the ball goes out on the left, they should of sensed at this moment danger and pumped up the intensity.

The problem with united is that every player is sprinting/trying to win the ball alone. If you look at the epl stats, united is among the leading team in distance covered. The problem is coordination. For example, bruno knows very well he can't win the ball 1v3 but he still runs towards it rather than retain that energy and try to do it as a team. The team should have triggers on when to press and when to stay compact. Everybody is doing their own individual press. That is on the manager more than the players.

The problem is theres a few passengers. Fernandes is pressing the centrebacks because even though he knows he wont win the ball, the ball goes to wide areas, which can then be pressed by Rashford and Mctominay easily. Problem is both these players dont press, Rasford is literally just walking around while Mctominay goes near the player and just stops. So now brighton say thank you very much and play through the press easily. If yoy want to press, then you nerd to do it with 11 players. Rashford is a major black hole here. But hes only goal scorer so ten hag cant drop him. I hope Hojlund or Garnarcho kick on, if they do I dont think Rashford will play important games for united

I think by this stage he was demoralised because he was the only one pressing. He usually has to step out of midfield to press for Rashford. I don't get what it is with Rashford, Mo Salah can run both ways all season and Rashford only has the energy to run forward. He wants to play like Ronaldo without the same end product.

I'd say both fullbacks tries more than him, Dalot and Reguillon tirelessly going back and forth from front to back, while the supposed wingers aren't tracking back to help them. Bruno had to cover Eriksen place while Eriksen was busy covering Mctom's void position, making the right wing position non-existent. Meanwhile, might as well make it a 10 man team when we're at defense since Rashford isn't any of help.

I can't remember the last time I saw a club so rotten to the core. Everyone who goes there fails. EVERYONE. Okay, except maybe Zlatan. And maybe Fernandes to some extent. But otherwise every manager or player in the post-Ferguson era has either stagnated or declined rapidly in quality and value, while so many City and Liverpool players have rapidly increased in value after signing. Signing for Utd is career suicide. Hoijlund might have just flushed his career down the toilet. Nobody gets out alive ☠️ Well, except Zlatan...

Out of possession it's lacking intensity, positive aggression and anticipation. The solution is difficult because it requires a reshuffle. Personnel in midfield that are good at stealing possession from the opposition, better at pressing in midfield especially at home and not just matching runs from the midfield but also slowing down and dispossessing dribblers. They must also be brave in build up phase and technical to play through the middle and boss the opponents and control tempo. It sounds crazy but Mainoo, Mejbri and Mctominay's profile are interesting in a midfield three together. Issues with the quality yes, but alternatives aren't that if they aren't radical.

This is what called as Mercenary Mentality. An old disease. But at this level, only happens in Man Utd or Chelsea at this moment or Arsenal few years ago. This is why I love Liverpool, it never happens even once in Liverpool history. Even in the worst time of Liverpool, Hogdson's tenure, the players still show the spirit. The players and the managerial team are only one part of the club. There's also the club staff and then the people of the city. If Rashford play for Liverpool, he'd be a diligent lad. He is not a problematic kid. It's just the wrong environment.

Credit to the Host for the Video. I'm not too big on tactics per se more of a get the ball and go type. But in looking at this, clearly the personnel isn't their to perform the task at hand. Two types of Managers there are, one that has a system and plugs players into it and one that sizes up the players and figures out what is best for what he/she has. Ten Hag has his system or style or philosophy or whatever you call it these days, but he strikes me as someone who may be flexible enough to be the latter when necessary. This United team is best suited for Counter Attacking football. Their two best players are Fernandes and Rashford, both of them are best suited for counter attacking. Rashford is best being on the end of a pass and running at an unset defense, Fernandes is at his best when looking forward and pinging the ball up the pitch. Ten Hag in an interview said he wants United to be the "best team in transition". That requires high energy which this shows some United's players don't have. Casemiro isn't high energy, Eriksen isn't high energy, neither is Martial, neither is Sancho and Rashford is selective in his displays. Ten Hag it appears in trying to be the first type of Manager but I would seriously advise him to become the latter. The problem is he went out and tried to acquire players that fit his preferred style but what he's got now is a confusing mix of both. Antony is high energy as is Hojlund and Mount but that means he's got some suited for his style and other not so much. This is a team that is trying to play differently from what they were successful at last year. It doesn't bode well because others around have improved like Liverpool and Brighton. He will earn his salary if he figures out what is best for this lot, either that or try to continue to force them to play the way he wants.
@dafunkyshit

I agree with much of what you've said and he did play the '2nd way' last season - that is pragmatic football, after we got trashed in the opening 2 rounds by Brighton and Brentford. So it is natural to try and implement your philosophy in the 2nd season after you've bought a few more players for that style, as you'd hope by then that the players would have 'bought in' to the philosophy of the manager. But when you have a team that is set up largely to play counter-attacking football and have been playing that way for so long, then there is always going to be a long adjustment period for the players to get used to that style of play, which means growing pains. However, if your players don't even want to buy in to your style of play, then there's even less you can do. He's damned if he does and he's damned if he doesn't; if he reverts to counter-attacking football, then the fans are going to criticise him for the lack of progress, and if he does what he is doing now, then the fans are going to criticise him for those growing pains I mentioned. No manager will succeed here until the owners are gone so that there can be a true cultural reset.

@@dafunkyshit He did a great job last year because he got all he could from this lot. My only criticism of him is that he is trying to change things instead of continuing to get the best out of what he has. The old saying about never change a winning hand has been lost on United. The players he bought I would assume fit his style but he doesn't have enough of them to do so. My critique is his timing. He's going to need more than 1 year to get what he wants, so to that end, I didn't believe for a moment that these changes were best for the team. Looking at the stats he and Richard Arnold needed to get more goals. I would have preferred they went all out to get a top notch goal scorer as that was the biggest weakness they had. Not going full out and getting a Kane was a disservice to the fanbase. His defense played well enough to be 3rd in the league with the personnel they had. His offense was Rashford and a prayer. Harry Kane would have transformed this team, not Onana. Hindsight is 20/20 but they would have been better and gotten off to a stronger start if they had spent the 160mil they spent by getting Kane and Kim. A goal scorer to increase your 58 goal output and less reliance on Rashford to duplicate what he did and another defender that would provide quality and depth to a solid defense. It's not lost on anyone that they will now have to face both of those players in Bayern Munich kits in the CL when both of them should have been in United kits. But it's too late now and he needs to figure out how best to play with the new personnel. Counter attacking football may not be pretty but it's still effective. If one wants proof, look no further than what West Ham did to Brighton compared to United.
@dafunkyshit
@dafunkyshit Жыл бұрын
@@trevg9450 I don't disagree that counter-attacking football can be effective - both you and I saw that under Ole for years. And most of the criticisms you have about Ten Hag are exactly the same as mine. The 'patterns of play' when going forward are exactly the same as they were under previous managers which is what you've said - kick it to Rashford and hope he produces something. As for recruitment, I remember the vigorous debate about getting a new keeper vs a new striker, given budgetary constraints. We were told that the feeling was that it would be a huge saga trying to get Kane and that it could go down to the last 24 hours of the transfer window, with there being no guarantee we would end up with him, given how much of a nightmare Levy is to deal with so I'm not even sure it was feasible to get him. We could have gone for someone like Goncalo Ramos or Muani though as opposed to Hojlund, although it's too early to say whether Hojlund will work out for us or not. On the other hand, de Gea was on a 350 K p/w contract, the most expensive keeper in history I believe, so it made sense to move on him and bring another keeper while he could, as de Gea clearly did not suit the style that Ten Hag was trying to implement. However, David Raya was available for half the price that Onana was, and had much better shot-stopping stats and much better aerial stats with decent distribution, yet we went for Ten Hag's preferred option (and our scouts actually wanted Mike Maignan). If we had gone for Raya, we would have had an extra 20 m in the budget and could have spent more on a quality back-up to Casemiro. I also thought Mason Mount was absolutely the wrong option to go for in midfield. We needed a controller/regista-type of profile in midfield and now have to make do with an over-the-hill Eriksen and hope that Kobbie Mainoo can contribute when he recovers from injury. In a perfect world, with new owners, I am pretty sure we could have got both Kane, a new keeper, a younger CB who is good on-the-ball, a natural 8 like Caqueret or Enzo Le Fee and a back-up DM. As for Kim, it was absolutely shocking we didn't even try and go for him. I found that disgraceful. Other criticisms I have for Ten Hag are his poor in-game management, lack of accountability in press conferences in recent times and hesitance to play younger players. He's very slow to react at times when we are down, and only uses youth as a last resort.

It's amazing that so many pundits and fans thought last season's "success" was some sort of indication of another massive step forward this season. On the surface of it, 3rd place and two cup finals, winning one, certainly looks "impressive"... but when you actually look at things semi-subjectively, a lot of the sheen falls away. For instance; 75 points is only one more than OGS got in his last full season. Both cup runs were largely the product of extremely fortunate draws; every possible round at home, and every game against a team lower down the leagues than them. United only played one game in the domestic cups against a team higher in the league than them ..and they lost it. And finally, a worse performance in the Europa League than OGS managed, and some record thrashings by their biggest rivals to boot.. and all that with a new manager bounce that was bound to dissipate this season. Fact is, United aren't that good.

It is the duty of the players as professionals to play till they can no longer stay upright. Not for any badge, pay cheque, fans, media pundits, or even the manager. For themselves, because they are professionals and they can't stand the thought of being on the same level as someone who is slacking and just getting by. The attitude you show at your job is the attitude you'll get when you're serviced. The underperformances last season at almost any away game were indication enough that this team does not have the mentality to win and those that had it are losing it. I don't think that's Ten Hag's fault. It runs from top to bottom. Owners who are after profit without effort get the players that they deserve. Tossing more money into the fire worked about as well as getting multiple managers sacked. If Ten Hag really had his way he would be playing the kids with most of the squad gone from the club for good. You can inspire and motivate children and teenagers. These are grown men. Its the first time they’ve ever played the diamond, you can see throughout the game that there was some confusion about who they should be pressing as they arent used to the system. Confusion about the press in such a high intensity formation is going to lead to fatigue - both physical and mental, which is what you’re seeing in this video. Injuries mean that we’re playing casemiro as a deep lying playmaker because hes the only fit midfielder that understands defensive positioning but he cant keep possession under pressure to save his life 😂 Meanwhile youve got McTominay who’s positioning is ALWAYS awful because he has no football IQ and Eriksen who doesnt have anywhere near the level of athleticism required to play wide in a diamond. But the reality is we didnt have a choice because of injuries. In an ideal situation we wouldnt have spent all preseason practicing a new system to then completely change it after 4 games and if we did we wouldnt choose to do so with these players, for the first time, against one of the best passing sides in the league
