I am SO SICK AND TIRED of people bashing on this game and saying there's nothing good about it. In fact, I'm sick of people bashing on something, saying there's "nothing good at all" when that couldn't be further from the truth. Maybe it's me, but I always make a conscious effort to acknowledge the good stuff of anything I watch, read, or play. Even if there are objectively some issues, I will focus on both the good AND the bad. Whereas most people nowadays tend to focus solely on the bad and shove the good into a corner, never to be talked about. But this video goes to show there was a lot of thought put into the story and characters. The story of _Spider-Man 2_ PS5 is about balance through self-acceptance. And that resonates with me so much in a way you wouldn't believe.

This game it's the fist game I've ever played in a playstation. I never had one. It hited me hard... My dad passed away from an addiction, so when I was playing the symbiote part of the game I just bursted into tears. Love your breakdown and the ideas you give. Keep up;)

I’m sorry for your loss and I’m happy you enjoyed it. As someone who suffered from an addiction before the symbiote storyline really hit hard, especially since it made it clear that it was an addiction through Peter convincing himself that it was better for everyone and that it makes him a better Spider-Man. That’s probably my favorite boss fight of all time

For everyone that says the 1st game story is “better” -It was clear as day that Martin Li was the head of the Demons..Insomniac even revealed this in the 2017 e3 demo before the game was even out. -As soon as you see Doctor Otto in the lab at the beginning of the game…everyone who is even remotely familiar with Spider-Man knows he will be Doc. OcK at the end -THE ONLY thing about Spider-Man 2018 story that was a surprise/shock was the VERY END with Aunt Mae. - And for everyone that says Spider-Man 2 story ending was rushed…Ok so breaking 4 villains out of Raft and basically going straight into boss fight after boss fight with no villain character development(except Otto and Li) wasn’t??? Spider-Man 2 -explores more overarching themes (rehabilitation, addiction, 2nd chances, even light-1st half of game vs dark-2nd half of game) -The shocking Sandman Beginning (No one saw that coming as the start of the game) -The whole revenge and redemption arc between Mile & Li was unexpected and VERY well done -playing as Venom was a big surprise and what happens with Kaven with Venom was very unexpected turn -Peter getting Anti powers was surprising (no one saw that coming..don’t lie) -and of course a certain person not dying at the end was a surprise (because everyone probably expected this person to die at the end, but didn’t)…and it’s good that person didn’t die because all the insomniac Spider-Man games don’t need to end in a death for emotional impact. It would have been too similar to the last two endings, let’s be honest. I just think Spider-Man 2 story had more twists and turns where as Spider-Man 2018 was really straight forward..like plainly straight forward a fairly standard Spider-Man story.

Well, if you also read some comics, you would have known that there was a chance for Anti-Venom to appear. Hell, when a trailer first dropped and shown that Martin Li was going to be in this game along with Venom, people were ALREADY speculating that Anti-Venom may make an appearance because that’s a pretty big thing. It’s just that nobody expected Peter to be the Anti-Venom host, but people were already expecting Anti-Venom before it’s reveal.
@evg0708
@evg0708 11 ай бұрын
@@Ninjaguy3128 you maybe right. But every major plot point was revealed in Spider-Man 2018 marketing trailers & e3 demos except the very end with Aunt Mae. And while it wasn’t revealed, once everyone saw doc otto and the beginning of the game…everyone knew we were helping doc Otto become doc ock for ending. Both great stories (2018 & SM 2), I just prefer SM 2 twists and turns, and overall story to 2018. I will say 2018 had better ending emotionally, but SM 2 had the better beginning. And Cindy moon reveal at the end has me excited for what they do with her in future games.

As you said, Otto and li were really well developed. But imo, kravens arc was rushed and wasn’t well developed. Also, I think insomniac could’ve showed more of Peters actions under the influence of the symbiote, just as Spectecular Spider man did

@fernandonakatsubo I don't see how you could develop Kraven's character more his main goal was to come to NYC for an equal to the point of him dying to achieve it, he got what he wanted. Kraven definitely was a menace he stole the show a little and even took out half of Spider-Man's villains, we're gonna need a new set of villains for the 3rd game.

Insomniacs Symbiote felt different. It felt like it genuinely wanted to help the world such as when it helped harry save those people when we first see it. And when it immediately transfers itself to peter when he’s dying. It wanted to help others. But when the symbiote got to peter. Peter was dealing with alot and holding alot of anger back and Peter and Symbiote developed a toxic relationship with one another where the symbiote began to feed off peters anger and hatred. So when the symbiote transfers back to Harry it was in the mindset that only forcibly and violently can we save the world or heal the world in this case.

No, though that is nice idea. Remember Harry’s comment about how he heard his mom’s voice while being “treated”? Venom was manipulating him. Confirmed near the end when he hears its voice again mimicking his mom. Same thing with that first cutscene. It was a dream the symbiote sent him to let him know it wouldn’t let him go. It was simply obeying Harry’s desire when it saved the people on the coaster, because it was appealing to him. Making him trust it and want the powers it could give.

This game portrays how heroes are flawed people just like everyone else. They get stressed struggle to deal with grief and feel like they have too much on their plate. Peter descends into darkness using the symbiote after a near death experience. Peter means well but the suit is an addiction to him and it takes Miles to help him out of it. Miles has struggles of his own like dealing with self doubt and feelings of not being good enough to be Spider-Man and be there for the people he cares about. Miles is there for Peter because he sees how far his mentor has fallen. He helps Peter remove the suit which represents him rejecting the anger and hatred the symbiote brings.

I think this video is the most relatable thing I've ever watched. I see parts of Peter in myself, his insecurities, his dark desires. Spider Man has always been my biggest role model in life. Peter was made fun of in his early years, just like how I am right now. He's nerdy like me, and there's so much more I have in common with Spider Man. This video actually helped me confront the darkness within me. I've finally found the answer to all my problems in life. Now I know that while darkness can never be cured, it can be held back by the light. That's why the saying is "Good triumphs over evil", not "Good eradicates evil".

The Miles and Mr Negative arc was reminding me of something Similar to Peter and Sandman from Raimi's Spider-Man 3! Learning to LET GO OF HATE & MEANINGS OF 2ND CHANCES What's similar about Raimi's Sandman and INsomniac's Mr. Negative is that they went down dark paths that they had no choice. Sandman gone down the dark path because he needed money to save his dying daughter. Mr Negative went down the dark path because Norman Osborn used Li to test a cure for Harry but ended up in a disaster that ended up Killing his parents. So he had a plan his whole life that after Kingpin is arrested, he would get revenge on Norman Osborn by terrorizing the city by blowing up City Hall bombing and teaming with the sinister six to release Devil's Breath! What's similar is that after these guys went down these dark paths is that they did the wrong things that they thought it was the right thing but then they know it was wrong but they had to do it because there was no other choice that would accomplish these characters desired goals. NOw we move on to our heroes (TObey's Peter Parker and Insomniac's Miles Morales). What's similar about their character arcs is that they want to go after revenge to the people that took their loved ones away! Peter is Uncle Ben, Miles is his dad Jeff! But later on, after their darkness in them is revealed, they know they have to let go their darkness! Peter had to remove the symbiote because it not only hurted Sandman, but everyone he cares about (MJ, HARRY, etc.). After Peter realises this, he has a hard time confronting his own insecurities, but his Aunt May reminded him about forgiveness! Before forgiving others, he needed to forgive himself first. Miles after realising that when Li was in his mind, he realizes his insecurities and his family and friends in his mind confronts him for his doubts. And Miles realizes the warnings that his friends about his revenge and see that in the full light. Instead of killing Mr. Negative, Miles decides to let him go to find his Peter since he's still in Venom mode and help save Miles. SO we move on into their final moments, we realise the most important part of the cake. TObey's Peter and Insomniac's Miles letting go of their hate for Sandman and Mr. Negative. For TObey's Peter, his final conversation of forgiving Sandman. Peter called Sandman out for killing Uncle Ben. But then, Sandman explains why he did this. He never wanted to hurt anybody. He just needed money to save his daughter. Uncle Ben tried to help Flint, but Sandman's partner made him accidentally kill Uncle Ben, leaving his guilt for a long time. Nothing left but saving his daughter. Peter knew that he try to do the right thing, but realizing he hurted other people. So he remembers the thing of Forgiving himself first then others. Peter was in the symbiote, hurting his friends and family but never intended to! It was the symbiote, so after forgiving himself, he forgives FLint Marko and finally letting go his hatred of him. ANd gave him a second chance! For Miles, when his Peter was about to get reposesed by the symbiote again, Martin Li comes out of nowhere and helps Miles get the symbiote off of Peter. So as Miles and Mr. Negative go into Peter's mind, we see his Darkness. Sadness, regret, and guilt in Peter's mind. As Miles and Li go more into the source, Li is reflected by his actions of how much Pain he caused to Miles and Peter and how Li's actions made him feel his guilt. (Espically after seeing the woman that helped him run the feast Shelter and cared most about but accidentally killed as well, AUNT MAY) Li told Miles why he did all of things, revenge on Osborn for killing his parents, but his actions also killed people that meant so much to them. SO in order to redeem himself, he decides to give all of his power to Peter to free him from the symbiote's darkness. But during Miles and Li's last moments, Miles can't forgive him because he's not at that point of Forgiveness like Tobey's Peter. But he tells Li that he can't keep that hatred of Li in him anymore because it wouldn't do any good but more harm to not himself, but others as well. So Miles let's go of his hatred for Li and gave him a second chance of Redemption but making things right! After they free Peter and gave him the Anti-Symbiote suit, Li thanks Peter and Miles for reminding that he's a good man inside. And goes his path of 2nd Chance and making things right. So what's important about this is that even though there are people that take away things that meant a lot to us! But forgiveness is a hard choice to make weather you forgive them or not depending on the situation. But the most important thing is that you can't let your hate take over you over them for too long! Let go that hate and give those people a 2nd chance of doing the right thing! Also, sometimes we people do the wrong things for what they think is right but it hurted others in the process. That guilt can comeback and you have a hard time forgiving yourself for that. But you can be forgiven or not! But importantly, you have a 2nd chance of trying to do the right thing (redemption)! And along that 2nd chance path, you may not or slowly forgive yourself for your actions but you can still make things right! Meaning that you're not a horrible person as a whole but a person who is insecure about their actions and thoughts and weather it's wrong or right! There's still good in you! This is why I love these arcs so much! Thank you Sam Raimi and Insomniac Games for teaching us about letting go of hate and meanings of 2nd Chances!

The character work really is great. I love that the stories for both Spider-Men show how the opposite extremes of dealing with the shadow are both wrong, and how the shadow corrupts good intentions when you try to get rid of it, rather than understanding what issues create it and where its flaws are. Where Miles gives in to revenge, the main aspect of his shadow that we see, Peter has been trying to bury his under as much light as he can, hoping to rid himself of it by becoming the perfect do-gooder. We see how both of these cause them to lose focus on their relationships with & responsibilities to others and themselves, and how each is forced to face their shadow as it corrupts their good intentions and eventually puts them at odds with their own ideals.

"Eddie, it's over. You're free. You can stop this stop hating." "Can't. It only loves me for the hate." - Spectacular Spider-Man This example came to mind while you were explaining how the Symbiote fosters on the pain of a person and brings that out. Another example would be Eddie expressing his jealousy towards Peter’s life: "We're not brothers! Our parents may have died together, but you had precious Aunt and Uncle. We were always alone. Great video ! And i also would like to add to the Peter’s anti-hero mind is linked to Yuri who shared Peter’s ideology . When she was fully filled with anger and guilt for her subordinate who died in the hands of Hammerhead . She thought that killing was the solution . Destroy the evil so it doesn’t come back . That’s what she did and found it better than sparing the evil and she fell for it . Also showing Peter’s toughness after all for not succumbing in the darkness until Venom made the darkness stronger . Without Miles Peter would have ended like Yuri being Wraith

Surface level reading of story: It's nothing special, but looking deep, you see the true value. @@safcjoe7062 Yeah, really my only critique is just that I wished the story had a bit more time in the oven in certain respects. I really would have loved a slower build of Peter's descent, mostly for a longer buildup of the rift Peter develops with his closest friends/loved ones (something that maybe starts as death-by-a-thousand-cuts and maybe has some climactic moments that really damages Peter's relationships) - as the game currently is, it feels like the rifts really rely on a small number of moments and phone conversations. A slower build into the symbiote invasion as well. Again, I loved the story, it was my favorite part of the game. I still had a like an 8 or 8.5-out-of-10 time with this game, I'm really just talking if funds and time were no object to Insomniac's development. (Also just as a quick edit, if the game did everything I wanted it would be unrealistically long, so I'm not saying this a my way or the highway kinda thing)

Great video, but I would really like to hear more of your thoughts on Venom. To me he was the most dissapointing aspect of the game, and no matter which angle I look from, I still can't really warm up to him. A lot of video essays on Spider-Man 2 have so much to say about the main cast but then Venom is just a footnote. Was hoping for some of your insight as you seem to understand the strenghts of this story quite well.
@Ranni
@Ranni Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah, while there are a lot of interesting ideas in the Marvel's Spider-Man 2, I felt that the execution of the main narrative was rushed and cluttered. There was not enough time to flesh out these themes. My thoughts for another Spidey video was initially going to be about the philosophy of Kraven, but I'd have to think more about Venom. I was thinking about just making a totally separate video discussing the psychological and symbolic significance of the symbiote because even Dr. Connors mentioned how there's a collective conscious and hivemind factor associated with the symbiote, which is pretty much an explicit reference to Carl Jung's thoughts on the collective unconscious, and the collective shadow.
@worm9591
@worm9591 Жыл бұрын
@@Ranni Those sound like great ideas for videos. Kraven's apathy was a fantastic instigator/reflection for the Spider-Men, and his philosophy is really interesting. His religiousness, his treatment of his family, his want to show the world what death should be, etc. He also serves as a mirror for Harry. Honestly, I would combine Harry/Venom and Kraven into one video since the two are so interconnected. It's no coincidence that they both come into Peter's life at the same time. And that final showdown where Kraven gets what he wants while Harry is left with his rotting humanity is maybe my favorite aspect of the game's story. But hey, no pressure.

I respect the deep dive into the psychology of the characters and how well you broke things down and matched it to Jung's teachings. Unfortunately I have to question the focus on Jung. His work and ideas are, frankly speaking, outdated. The field of psychology has moved on substantially since Jung and Freud were working and most of it has been discarded, or expanded on so much that the original ideas are simply too basic. Still, as I said, I do respect the depth with which you've analysed the characters using actual psychology, instead of just feelings or intuition.
@Ranni
@Ranni 3 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate the feedback! While I agree that much of modern psychology has dispensed with Jung, it doesn't negate the influence it has had on Spider-Man 2 itself. In Spider-Man 1, Peter explicitly talks about Jung when investigating Martin Li's hidden room. So, it wouldn't be too farfetched to presume that Insomniac was influenced by Jung's work.

@@Ranni I do get that, and I don't totally reject starting with Jung, it just feels (and please bear in mind that I'm struggling to put my thoughts into words) that it's a little outdated. Any analysis based on Jung could do with a follow up based on more modern research. I do get that focusing on him may be more accessible to viewers though. Thinking about it as I tie up this reply, as an analysis of the story and characters rather than the actual psychology then a focus on Jung may actually be fine. I probably need to think about this a bit more. Still, thanks for responding!

So Spider-Man is Jiraya(the mentor who can’t seem to do anything right and often times let’s the darkness overtake him), Miles is Naruto, (the predecessor who DIDNT let the anger or the loss of his father over take him even when it was so easy for him but instead shows mercy.) Martin Li is Pain( Someone who will take drastic measures to find his own “peace” but as a result robbed the lives of many innocent people for the sake of his own justice but later learns the error of his ways through the protagonist sparing his life no matter how undeserving he is.)

Alright, but on a serious note, my only complaints with the story of this game is that it feels like they were trying to push too many things in to one singular narrative, they don’t do it badly it’s just something I picked up, and they didn’t give us enough time with the symbiote, not just symbiote Peter but just the alien in general.

Is the Blue bio electricity really passed on from Li? I always wondered about that. Certainly Li's containment would protect those on the outside from his abilities. I assumed the new power Miles unlocks was connected to him absorbing massive amounts of Nuform energy in the previous game, and only now are it's remnants bubbling to the surface because of Miles coming Face to Face with his Shadow The pain, guilt, rage and memories of his two most traumatic points in his life, the death of his father, and the death of Phin, bring this power to the surface Spider-Man 2 likes to pretend that the Miles Standalone title isnt that important. But as i played, i couldn't help but connect his new powers to Nuform, as the reactor and Phin's death was an integral moment for Miles. A moment of choice and sacrifice. Id imagine those events really put Miles into a mindset that he needs to be nothing less than perfect. He needs to give up his normal life to ensure protection, for new york and his family. Because in his game, he thought he was ready, believed he was doing his best and trusted himself despite everything melting away around him. Through the entire Miles game, he tries to talk to his villains and make them see his side of things, the peaceful sensible side, but each one replies with clashing fists. In the end, it isn't his words that stopped Phin. Its his punches that outlast her enough for her to see the destruction and change her mind. He learns in his game that punching and brute force is the only way to enforce whats right, specifically to enforce what HE thinks is right. Which fuels his internal conflict about "whats right" to do about Martin. He gave Phin so many chances and she still endangered everyone despite his words, his screaming pleas. Why should Martin get words instead of his ever so persuasive fists? But Miles knows in his heart whats really right, even if its the most difficult thing to control. His new power being connected to those events makes so much sense for me, especially if its acting as his Venom. I mean his powers are called Venom powers. He unlocks this new darker powerful ability, and thinks that giving into that power and fighting harder will bring him the peace he wants, until he sees first hand what a similar path is doing to peter. And finally, during Pete and Miles' fight, its Miles' words that bring the foe down, not just his fists
