Why Do We Love Black Suit Spider-Man?

This video is a detailed essay on Black Suit Spider-man and what makes the character so iconic and memorable in the pop culture community. When making this I tried exploring the themes of the Black suit and what it could represent in terms of the narrative and insomniacs Spiderman universe. This would be my fourth video about Spiderman, and I can't lie this series was definitely my favourite to cover on the channel.

I feel as though Peter corrupted the symbiote in a way. The symbiote heard his negative thoughts and put them front and centre, maybe since it found the negative thoughts helpful for peter to be a better Spider-Man which he wanted to so desperately be to achieve balance just like may said in the flashback. What makes the Peter versus Miles boss so impactful is that its a fight of two people Peter has influenced. Miles he's turned into a hero and represents the good in him, while the symbiote he's turned into a monster, representing the bad in him.

Then Harry at one point says during his time in suspension that he would constantly hear his mother tell him to heal the world. Then we hear the suit tell him the same in his mother’s voice. There’s actually some truth to that. While the symbiote does amplify Peter’s strength quite a bit, he already has more than enough power to beat most of his villains easily if he didn’t hold back. The symbiote removes his mental blocks, and allows him to fight unrestrained.

You're not wrong since the Symbiote didn't change Peter's power or amplify it. It was confirmed in Amazing Spider-Man issue 332 that Eddie believed Venom boosted Peter's strength with his. But Venom states Peter was already augmented by the Spider bite confirming Peter has always been stronger than he has let on.

I like the Black Suit arc because there are plenty of times in my life where I could've definitely released my suppressed rage to get something done. One of the things that hits home for me is one of the powers the Symbiote gives Peter. The Symbiote doesn't increase Peter's striking strength it just releases the subconscious barrier Peter has to make sure he doesn't seriously hurt someone. That level of ruthlessness mirrors my soul sometimes.

I definitely agree. The Black Suit and Venom has always been my favorite Spider-Man story arc. It represents his greatest failure as both Peter and Spider-Man. So once the suit finds another host and becomes Venom, it's a manifestation of that failure. However, in some media, Venom goes through a redemption arc and decides to stop trying to kill Spider-Man, so it shows that you can come to terms with your biggest failure and something good can come out of it.

Watching Peter struggle with “addiction” and hearing him say things I myself had also said in the past really broke me. When he gets confronted by MJ and harry, the people who care about him the most, and he returns their genuine concerns with hate and anger I couldn’t help but cry as I saw myself in him. The way he gets defensive and not willing to listen, how he says “it makes me a better Spider-Man” knowing he’s lying to himself just to keep the symbiote, it’s a perfect representation of what addiction feels like. It leaves you lonely so that the only thing capable of filling that loneliness is the addiction itself. If you are struggling with any kind of addiction, being substance abuse, gambling, or anything. Seek help. It doesn’t make you weak. It takes a lot of strength and effort to reject temptation, and even more to climb out of the void of addiction. I love you, and you deserve a chance to be happy

If I had to draft my ideal version of a Venom story, I'd say that the symbiote should *not* be a magic goo that makes Peter a worse person. I think that cheapens Venom later on if done that way, even if it makes an interesting Peter story. Instead, I'd propose the following: the symbiote and Peter merging together is still a situation that empowers Peter. It provides him with convenience, he provides the symbiote with the adrenaline and emotions that it feeds on. But, the symbiote's lack of understanding of humans and alien-ness is emphasized all the more through the lens of Peter's immaturity. Peter is a teenager (in this hypothetical rewrite, at least; I know he's an adult in the comics when he gets it) and is prone to want things he doesn't need. The symbiote merging with Peter already provides both of them with good feelings, so the symbiote decides to reach out and help Peter obtain those immediate desires that seem like they'd also feel good, damn the consequences. Initially, Peter might not care too much about how things he wants are inconveniencing people around him, but over time he begins to realize he's being terrible to others. His sense of power and responsibility is out of whack, and it all started when he put on the symbiote. So he tries to remove it, the symbiote is horrified and clings tighter because it doesn't understand why Peter isn't happy with it anymore. It's done everything it could to make him happy. Peter sees this clinging tighter as aggression from the symbiote and tries to destroy it. The symbiote is hurt, but feels betrayed. It did everything it could to help Peter and he turned against it. When it comes across Eddie and bonds with him, it learns about hate and decides to seek revenge alongside him. At the same time, Venom's warped morality can be explained as the symbiote trying to emulate all of the good feelings it got from Peter by fighting crime. It doesn't understand necessarily why beating up bad guys was good for Peter's soul, but it wants Eddie to do the same. But because the proper mentality isn't there, this leads to a Venom that does things like eat people and horrify onlookers, even though he's just trying to help. Just a random idea that came to mind, since I can't help but feel that "pure evil Venom" kind of cheapens his complexity and basically just turns him into a buffer Carnage.

Personally I just appreciate this story of release turned into a power trip. Cause honestly as relatable as Spider-Man is already, we all have a limit to how much we can take before we break and Peter getting external stimuli to let it out without any filter, it's a powerful beat of realism especially when we say or do something we did because of strong emotions brewing into anger as we begin to regret whats been done. Touching back on the relatable note he rapidly becomes cautios with every because of how hes treated them and is regretful after realizing how hes acted once he rids himself of the overwhelming stimuli. Simply put, the Black Suit for Peter is the equivalent of drugs for a addicts or alcohol for drunkards, and as most scenarios as this go it takes a friend... After so many adaptations of the symbiote being an inherently negative force and making Peter aggressive and darker, I wish we could get some adaptations where the symbiote is just misguided and only becomes evil after getting rejected by Peter. This take on the black suit arc that's been the status quo since Spider-Man: The Animated Series is a fantastic one, but I think we've reached a point where we can try a different approach for the black suit and how it hinders Peter's life before becoming Venom

This is a thing that exists, multiple versions of venom simply wanted to help peter, if you read the original comics, the symbiote had almost no downsides, it didn't make peter aggressive or anything, the only reason it goes on to become venom is because peter took off the symbiote after he found out it was alive, and the symbiote hates him after that

I can say as an addict, who has also been traumatized and taken advantage of by terrible people...this story sticks with me better than any other. Peter's pain and anger is completely valid. After enough pain, there's only so much a person can take. But responding with rage and vengeance is never the answer. It's lonely, and makes the pain worse. Much like Peter after he gets the Symbiote off, I still struggle to recognize that I'm not just slime wearing human skin. But nobody is. We're all human, and no matter how dark our lives seem to be, we can recognize what we've done wrong, and resolve to be better.

I think this story including Miles really helped because other adaptations like the 90's cartoon, Spectacular, and the best movie of all time all had to have Peter stop and see for himself that he's starting to go down a dark path and that he should put an end to it before it's too late, but in this story more people know Peter's identity so we can see more people express concern rather than frustration towards him, and with Miles acting as the voice of reason rather than Peter having to do everything himself, we get to see him so much further than most other adaptations 90's cartoon he almost kills a bunch of guys but always snaps himself out of it Spectacular had him mostly just be a huge dick and more aggressive fighter The only movie to have 110% on rotten tomatoes made him more cocky and spiteful rather than vengeful and aggressive This game lets Peter go full rampage, relentlessly beating the crap out of hunters, Conners, and only failing to kill Kraven because Miles intervened, on top of treating everyone around him as horribly as the villains I love most any adaptation of this storyline, but having so many more characters know Peter is Spider-Man and having Miles act as all the best parts of what Spider-Man should be allows Peter to block out his inner voice and indulge so much more in using the suit

In my mind, Peter isn’t responsible for Otto’s turn. I feel it’s Otto’s responsibility’s for himself turning into Doc Ock and his aunt’s death along with Li. Everyone has a conscience and Otto knew what he was doing. He wanted revenge and, yes, he was presented with charm with good intentions, but he still had resentment he didn’t deal with properly. Not that Norman didn’t play a hand in Otto’s fall, and he himself did do bad things as to not lose his son, but Otto came so very close to be worse than Norman. Who knows how bad Norman will be in the third entry?
