I recently started wearing a mask. I usually have my face fairly close to the paw for better vision. We do this outside and I can clearly see thick nail dust in the air around the paw. You don’t want to breathe this stuff into your lungs. Afterward my Dremel is completely covered with a coat of dust that I wipe off with a damp cloth. You should also clean the Dremel grinding bit. And then wash your hands and face just in case.

I am tickled to see a professional using a dremel to do dogs nails, and showing us how to do it! I dremeled two boxers nails, a fawn and a brindle. Wish I had known what I was doing when I started. On ‘nail days’, which was usually bath days, I had boxer lie down on a large towel to catch as much debris as possible, I wore glasses to keep dust out of eyes. Mostly held my breath ….masks would have been a great idea back then. Then pupper got a bath and I took a shower to get nail dust out of my hair and face. Also, I used the sandpaper cone shaped dremel attachment. Do your doggo a favour and insist that feet and toes are handled daily so that nails can be handled without stress to dog or owner. I would have loved a battery operated dremel, mine was corded. I began using a dremel because my fawn boy was traumatized by a groomer who cut into the quick on black nails on 3 of 4 feet in one session . I halted proceedings at that point and learned how to dremel shortly after that. Boxers rock! Wish I could have another but my health won’t permit, so I have to enjoy them vicariously now! Again, thanks so much for the service you are doing in excellent explanation and showing owners how to take care of nails like a pro. 🥰💕❤️

Thank you for sharing. I dremel my dog’s nails outside, but I should still wear a mask. 👍

I just found you and so grateful for your tutorials - especially on nail grooming. Question: at what speed (rpm) do you set your Dremel? Does it depend on what you want to accomplish? Thank you.
@GoodDogGrooming Жыл бұрын
Yes! Although 10,000 rpm is a good “rough and dirty” rule of thumb. Much higher and the noise tends to make more dogs nervous (although some can tolerate it) and much lower and it simply takes a little too long to do each nail. That said, everyone can adjust based on their dog’s needs. Some people find it worth it to have work on a low speed because it’s the only way their dog will tolerate nail dremeling. My dremel is actually a 2 speed, low (6,500rpm) and high (14,000 rpm) and I almost always use it on high. If there was a middle speed on it I would probably choose that at least half the time… but the high works well enough for my purposes! Hope that helps!

@@GoodDogGrooming Yes, this is very helpful. Thank you. I'm fortunate to have a powerful, variable-speed, quiet and low-vibration (expensive) nail grinder, and just starting to use it on this pup. I'm having to desensitize him again to a nail grinder as someone was too aggressive in a previous nail trim. So, along with other desensitizing steps, I'm starting at a slow-ish rpm and short sessions; and yes, the yummiest of treats. It's a party nail trim!

Awesome!! I’m amending my previous rpm answer to expand it. Instead of 10,000 I’m now saying 10,000 through 25,000. I looked more closely at some of the tools and just launched this video about rpm! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGawgHZvmq-aY68

Do you mean dremeling your dog’s nails? I do have a how-to video, if it helps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioLImIybrM5kiqM

@JL F, Her how to video is most excellent, especially learning and practicing on pencils. Brilliant idea and sure to build confidence. Go for it! 😊

Any tricks to help keep the dog from breathing in the dust? I have a corgi and his nose is pretty close to his nails.
@GoodDogGrooming Жыл бұрын
Honestly I have not thought hard about this but I’m going to! Here’s a couple ideas off the top of my head: put a small fan on next to your dog blowing the dust away from their head? Put a cone around their neck to keep them from sniffing near the nail you’re working on? Position yourself so you’re flipping the front paws backwards so it’s farther away from their heads? If I come across enough good ideas I’ll make a new vid! Usually groomers worry about their own mask because they do so many dogs in a day, multiple days a week. Thankfully each dog only gets their own nails done every so often so the frequency is lower!
