@ElectricJohnny Yup, she actively sought the job for the sake of her own personal ambition, knowing that she would have to deal with Brexit. Sadly for us, she's as incompetent as the day is long and got the job by default. She should have resigned the second she failed to secure a majority at the last general election, but she simply has no shame or self-awareness.

@@jgacfhhahjjshggqhhqikwhh3919 Cameron was no such thing. He outright lied when he said he wouldn't resign and would invoke article 50 the day after the referendum, he couldn't possibly stay as Prime Minister after being the chief spokesman for remain and then stay on afterwards, and he knew it when he made those promises. It astounds me how little political awareness supposedly clever remainers have, most are no better than the worst kind of brexiter tbh.
@DivingDog0
@DivingDog0 5 жыл бұрын
He could easily have stayed on. Lying about something isn't exactly ground-breaking for a politician. Or Cameron. The media would moan about it, moan about him being a remainer, and then move on. May is also a remainer and no one much cares. The whole reason Cameron left was to avoid the backlash that would come from Brexiteers when they realised a 'good' deal was impossible; inevitably blaming the PM for not getting blood from a stone. So yeah, smarter than 50% of the UK, for all his faults. Your lack of political awareness astounds me.

Quite honestly, her career has been doomed ever since Cameron slid out the door in disgrace and let someone else shoulder the burden/blame for his incredible miscalculation. Tory party leadership has been a poison chalice to whoever picks it up after the referendum, everyone in power knew negotiations with the EU would go incredibly poorly and cause a massive ruckus. May isn't somehow innocent of the problems, but I'd argue not a one would have been able to make something out of the very complicated situation the UK sits in right now.

Suijin agree she was doomed from the start, just as Brexit is a mess.
@MultiBigbird01
@MultiBigbird01 5 жыл бұрын
@Suijin Exactly! This is a case of people wanting something, but not really knowing how to achieve it in practise. That sums up the brexiteers in UK politics. May unfortunately is the one who will become a scapegoat for a failed brexit as she is the one heading the negotiations as prime minister, as in the end when things go awfully wrong, you'll just have one brexiteer politician taking the role over from theresa once she is forced to resign, and all the blame will simply be put on theresa, rather than people realising how messy brexit is anyways, and in the hands of any politician brexit will still be the same mess that may damage the UK's future. How the UK can leave the EU and still have a prosperous economy in the future is an answer even brexiteers do not know themselves, yet still they still want it. Brexit was surrounded by uncertainty from the beginning for the UK's future, hence why I voted remain.
@tomtherealpom
@tomtherealpom 5 жыл бұрын
May and her deal were doomed way before then. She made a mistake in triggering article 50 before having the faintest idea how to implement it. And then her red lines made it inevitable that we'd end up with this monstrosity of a deal that is bound to fail. Her red lines ruled out possibly the only kind of Brexit that might have worked - some kind of Norway plus customs deal. It wouldn't have made anyone happy, but might have got enough people from all sides to grudgingly accept it and move on.

Corrections: There's been other times we've had a hung parliament since WW2, though not immediately after a GE. Both Callaghan and Major lost their slim majorities over the course of the parliament due to retirements/deaths. It wasn't the Lib Dem whip who resigned. The phrase 'resign the whip' just means that the MP is no longer under the whip/authority of the party. You mentioned the 9 independent MPs without mentioning that all but 1 of those (Lady Hermon) were formally in other parties but either resigned the whip or had the whip up removed (ie kicked out). Which would effect the 318 number of con mps quoted

@TLDR News - When you say Liberal or mentions it in your videos, is it then the American version of liberal or the original European version? In USA Liberals are used on the "left wing" democrats,. while Liberal in most of Europe actually belongs to the "right wing" (anti-republicans). Lets take My country Denmark as exsample - Our current government, lead by the center/rightwing party Venstre (actually meaning Left) is branded (and brand themselves) as the Liberal party of Denmark. So when a Dane votes for ANY right-wing party, its a vote for a Liberal party, but this is not the same in the republic of USA. So i would like clarification before i get offended :)
@seraphina985
@seraphina985 5 жыл бұрын
This is one of the major problems with using the terms left wing and right wing to simultaneously talk about positions on two very different political axis, the two axis model works better using the left/right axis to represent the economic axis only (ie command economy on the far-left and extreme laissez faire on the far-right) and stick to using libertarian and authoritarian for the social axis (ie referring the issues of individual liberty and personal freedoms). That way the European type meaning would be more leaning right-liberal while social democrats and similar would lean more left-liberal, then again the current crop of liberals in the US seems to actually be borderline left-authoritarian given their stance on issues like hate speech laws.
@Lilitha11
@Lilitha11 5 жыл бұрын

@@seraphina985 Also, the colour scheme.. Republicans in USA use Red, democrats use blue.. In europe blue is right from the center and red is for those left of the center. Here in Denmark where i live, we have monarchy, de facto making republicans the ultra-far-left in my country. Something Americans dont understand most often. But i agree with the 2 different political axis. That was also why i had to ask, since here in europe you can come across ignorant people running around calling antifa "damn Liberals" becuase thats what they see in american videos, but i can almost promise that no antifa here would be considered liberal. But in both parts of the world antifa is put on the far left. Ofc the multi-political-party system we have in most of Europe is also far from the 2-party system of USA.
@seraphina985
@seraphina985 5 жыл бұрын
@@jimmywayne983 Well that is probably also because the two parties in the US basically traded places on the political spectrum there is a channel on youtube called knowing better that has a video called "political ships of thesis the party switch" that might help somewhat explain the colour switch. Though they do seem to be on another round of mutation becoming something else that's even further from both their origins and their current positions. So they probably did initially bring with them the colour associations from the cultures that most of their settlers came from (Predominantly European) then the party switch made it seems really weird to everyone that is not american. I have found myself joking before about how the US seems to go out of it's way to distance itself from Europeaness by acting as weird as possible on many cultural norms but I don't think this was one of those cases, more the weird fluid land that is politics screwed up the relevance of the icongraphy and colour schemes to a changing landscape.

A second referendum would most likely give 3 options to people, remain (assuming that is still possible), leave with May's deal and Leave with no deal. The idea being in 2016 what Brexit would have looked like wasn't exactly known and you could do a Single transferable vote election ( to avoid the two leave options splitting the election) and go with the option that receives a majority of the people's votes.

Ireland is to be united once the referendum is held. Until then Ireland and england have a say in what goes on in N.I. There is to be no border in Ireland. That's pretty much the whole thing.

5 жыл бұрын
@@thepolticalone961 because the english want to put a customs border in Ireland which would be a violation of the Treaty. The consequences of that would involve massive amounts of munitions and weapons being deployed. Currently there is a garrison of around 2000 english soldiers in Northern Ireland, at one point there were 27,000 there to maintain the invasion.

Neither the UK or the EU want a real border, UK for obvious populist reasons wants an anti freedom of movement border with no trade border(which already exists by the way somewhere in the Irish sea ) , and the EU a trade border in the event of a no deal on trade which is kind of normal. So the no deal position not wrecking the good Friday agreement would turn the whole of Ireland in a giant freeport zone much to the advantage of all it's inhabitants. Oddly enough I can't see either the UK or the EU agreeing on such an outcome , pity though Dublin and Belfast replacing the city would be a fun story to tell

If there were a People's Vote it should be an Alternative Vote style with three options: Remain, May's Deal, No Deal. While Remain would likely win in first past the post, Leave may well stack up with AV system. I don't like the AV system but it works for this. I think May may well do this when it fails as it is the only way to get Parliament to agree to her deal.

@Hauke Holst If we agree to stick with EU rules with only slight deviations then there isn't a need for loads of customs checks, merely a few added onto the ones already there. They can be almost purely technological and minimal in infrastructure, still allowing for the near free movement of goods and people across the border. The comments you've made in regards to the ERG are mostly unfounded, they've called upon many experts and their proposed alternative deal presents a lot of opportunities and clarity without the regulatory nightmare of remaining in the customs union (which kills off any chance of further trade deals with other countries). The EU said themselves an agreement like this was plausible. Concessions would have to be made, but there's a difference between concessions and remaining half in which is the worse of both worlds. If efforts are made on both sides to stop infrastructure being erected than the good Friday agreement shall not be violated, and if terrorists wish to attack a few light customs points then they shall face the full brunt of the law as they should do. If the EU erects infrastructure then they are playing a political game or just being paranoid

And then have a discussion what to do when both other options have been taken off the table. The problem with May getting enough support of the deal is that too many people think their favorite solution would be the one that get passed if May:s deal looses. And only way to get enough MP:s behind compromise is to show both extremes that their solution cannot get passed either.

That's one of the main points: the UK wants to keep trading with the EU market as if they are in the EU. Same goes for visa etc. however they do not want any of the responsibilities or downsides. That's why the brexit seems unfair but it really isn't: choose either hard borders or soft but with responsibilities shared with the EU as there are today. The UK has gotten some pretty neat advantages/deals in the past from the EU and when joining the EU. There is absolutely no reason to hold them to their promises (investments) and to give them all of the pros of the EU without the cons. So at this point it is impossible to answer your question. As I understand it, May's deal wouldn't change the current rules for students or travellers but the cost might be to high to make the deal pass.

If anything, the original one wasn't properly democratic because they downplayed its significance because it wasn't expected or intended to ever pass. It's beyond sketchy to say, "this is a *_NON BINDING_* resolution to gauge popularity of the idea" then when it passes by a whopping 2% suddenly treat it like an absolute, writ in stone, binding judgement from "the people". What they should have done was either make the first one explicitly binding to begin with, or after that "advisory vote" passed, _actually treated it as an advisory vote_ and then held a second, _explicitly_ binding referendum a week or two later. You want proper democracy? Stop sneaking things through on technicality.

There is no way to avoid crashing out of the EU with no deal now. May should shift gears to a planning for the no deal brexit. She could start government stockpiling vital suplies, expanding infrastructure to account for custom check delays, and looking for governments willing to start negociating trade deals with Uk in advance of the exit. As to the border between ireland and northern ireland she should start setting up the custom checks at the ports, and leave the border open.
@kensavage7657
@kensavage7657 5 жыл бұрын
@zenopath You understand, of course, that one of the rules of being in the EU (which the UK still is) is that you legally cannot negotiate an external trade deal while you are still a member? This being a very big reason why the EU/UK are currently only discussing a WITHDRAWL deal and not a TRADE deal. Also, I'm sure that you understand that Northern Ireland is a physical part of the UK? If you decide to have no border checks for goods coming from Ireland into Northern Ireland then, under WTO terms, you are legally forbidden for checking similar items coming from another WTO member into any part of the UK? So, you'll have no need for the extra custom checks at the ports - as they won't be allowed to check any goods coming in. So I'm sure that do understand that this, relatively simple, point is the entire reason for May's deal that leaves Northern Ireland contained within the EU custom territory, but puts a custom border between the UK mainland and Northern Ireland.... Oh, and if you wanted to start expanding infrastructure to be able to account for any custom check delays then "now" is not the time to start preparing. The time to start was around 18 months ago, if you wanted to even be close to being ready in March if there's a no-deal exit......

We should have gone to the WTO immediately. There is a lot of flexibility under WTO. Also, rules such as this can be disapplied by vote. Alternatively, if the government had not been so unproffesional they could have gone to the WTO or the EU with a detailed technical solution. As many of us that work in high value global supply chain know, automated systems are far more reliable than human based oned. Solving the problem either way. The fact is that May is far out of her depth and has spent almost 2 years trying to reposition a form of remain instead of doing her mandated job. @kensavage7657
@kensavage7657 5 жыл бұрын
"We should have gone to the WTO immediately" I don't understand? "When" would you consider this "immediately" to have applied? Do you mean that the UK should have just decided to go, then left overnight? If so, do you understand what an international agreement actually is? The rules for leaving the EU state: "The Treaties shall cease to apply to the State in question from the date of entry into force of the withdrawal agreement or, failing that, two years after the notification referred to in paragraph 2, unless the European Council, in agreement with the Member State concerned, unanimously decides to extend this period." So, you trigger article 50 and you leave when either: 1. You reach a withdrawal agreement that is unanimously agreed within the EU 2. Two years pass from the date you declare to leave Since the time of the referendum, there has been no possible time that the UK could legally currently be trading completely under WTO rules unless you had came to a withdrawal agreement with the EU. And since the UK didn't even decide what it wanted from such a deal (some would say, it still hasn't), then the 2 year exit point is still the first legal point this could happen. "There is a lot of flexibility under WTO. Also, rules such as this can be disapplied by vote." Wow - there is actually suprisingly little flexibility under the WTO around things like this. It's a binding agreement involving all but 12 countries in the World, each with an equal say. No-one is going to vote for anything to benefit little UK and not themselves. If you didn't like having little clout in a group of 28 countries, then you're not going to like depending on the WTO to get your own way on things! If you're not trading under a FTA or a custom union arrangement, you trade under WTO terms. Why would Ghana (for example) show any understanding to the UK's position and agree that the UK/EU can bypass WTO rules temporarily and the UK can continue to import corn (for example) without any duties/custom checks between the two. After all, the two are strong trading buddies? No - Ghana will immediately complain and demand that the UK buys Ghanaian corn and that it treats it equally and does not apply any custom checks/duties on it so it's treated exactly equally to the EU. To summarise - if you treat one country as a MFN (most favoured nation), then you treat everyone as a MFN! "Alternatively, if the government had not been so unproffesional they could have gone to the WTO or the EU with a detailed technical solution." They could have went with a detailed technical solution about what? I assume you're talking about details of a new trading arrangement? If so, the EU can't do that because (by the EU rules that the UK helped write) no country currently in the EU can negotiate an external trading arrangement while within the EU. The EU/UK cannot, legally, discuss or plan anything to do with a future trading arrangement until the UK leaves. If you're not talking about this, then I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean here?

They're in too deep at this point - no matter what happens, the UK as a whole is going to look really, really stupid.

The British establishment's Brexit policy has been clear from the very start, dilly-dally as long as possible, come up with a plan that's acceptable to none, and then push for a second referendum, that'll be rigged for remain... If you don't believe me, then just regard the EU's history of disregarding referendum results... Twice the Irish people voted to overwhelmingly reject EU treaties, (2001 and 2008, the Nice and Lisbon Treaties) only for them to be re-run the following year, when they were then miraculously accepted. Same thing happened in Denmark in 1992 with the Maastricht Treaty. If the British establishment proves itself to be treasonous and democratically subversive, by pushing for a second referendum, then Westminster beware, for even the bleating British sheep can only take so much, and you'll have opened a pandora's box of rancour and riot.

My local MP opposes the deal and will vote against it. I hope we don't get a general election just a new deal and new PM.

I think its pretty risky to say that may's deal will be most likely denied, as there is also the silent EU's influence at play on the house of commons. As anything, I think it will pass sadly.

Can you do a video on what Labour wants from Brexit as many people still seem to be unclear on it?

Labour wants brexit to corrode and destroy the Tory party. Brexit is a poison chalice which can only destroy anyone who touches it. You won't hear anything original about brexit out of Labour until they have won the next general election.

Just leave with no deal, if the WTO terms are good enough for the rest of the world then it's good enough to use as a starting point for us. To think that our current trading partners wont give us the same deal as we have now via the EU is laughable is we give them the same deal with us as they have now. It wouldn't be a long process to renew trade deals.

When Caroline Lucas gets more of a mention than UKIP. To be fair I think a large green shift in politics is overdue. Should Labour mess up, we might see a smaller party, or an alliance of them, get a majority.
