My paternal grandmother is from Bucharest Romania, came to the USA at the age of 13 when her grandmother, who was a doctor, died. She missed the Nazis and the Soviets. Her brother, who remained behind, escaped to Israel, then British Palestine ahead of the Nazis. I met her brother’s son, wife and two daughters, one married with two kids and an obnoxious dog she insisted didn’t understand English. I had to speak to her in Hebrew when I was still getting down and up confused.
