I wish it was that simple. WW2 changed how many thought about war. When Vietnam came, there was a large counter-war culture and a visible division. Those were hard times that bred a lot of men that didn't want to fight. Add in easy money for most of 75 years and there is no feeling of necessity anymore. Necessity is what makes things happen. Hard times bring hard men. Hard men bring soft times Soft times bring soft men Soft men bring hard times. Mark is a soft man that has us heading for hard times. Imagine if he did something useful with his life instead? I'm just thrilled people are figuring out he's not a leader in anyway, shape or form finally. Elon is so, SO much worse, watching TSLA melt down is possibly going to make me hard at some point🤓

That's what Zuckerberg is literally lacking, Philosophy. If a man from 1800s travel to the present, he'll describe this world as a hellhole dystopia and might actually kill himself but for us, it's pretty tame. Progress is fine as long as you give the people a rationale to its social necessity. And that's what Metaverse is lacking. For most people Metaverse would be a blackmirror episode in accordance to our present values and morals.

The problem with Zuck's metaverse isn't the technology. Its the target audience. Meta has always billed its product as a business tool - you can push a shopping cart down a virtual store isle (as if anyone wants to do that) or host a virtual meeting with your avatars (as if anyone would prefer that to Zoom or Teams where you can see an actual person). We may one day reach a point where there's a true VR "parallel world" with true commerce and industry, but that day is certainly not today. Today VR is still looking for its "killer app". The thing everyone "has to have" regardless of price. And I don't think anyone (aside from Zuck apparently) believes that will be anything other than a video game of some sort. The tech is still young and new innovators are coming into the market all the time, so its not a complete guarantee that the final "killer app" will be a video game, but we've come up with precious few places outside of games where VR is intrinsically better than the traditional way of doing things - often to the point where the VR version simply tries to emulates the traditional way within its environment, giving you no extra benefit and (at best) a clunky control system to utilize rather than your drastically more dexterous hands. VRChat works because they aren't trying to do things like that. They're just a platform people can get on and play around in. No attempts at "realistic" avatars that are still at least a decade away from being anything less than horrible cartoons, they just let you pick whatever anime girl you want and off you go. Or make up your own avatar if you want. They don't try to be a "business platform" that nobody wants or needs - they're just there to be entertainment. Sure there's a social aspect to it (and that's an important part of the system) but driving ad-laden feeds in front of everyone's faces is not the core feature. Its almost just IRC with a fancy headset. If Zuck (or anyone else) wants to make a metaverse work on a large scale though, they're not going to do it like Meta or even VRChat are going about it, though VRChat is certainly closer. What they'll need to do is more along the lines of the Apple store - they build a walled garden with sufficient control to keep out the scammers and jacktards, but fundamentally only act as an "operating system", providing shared APIs for things like transferring your avatar between worlds, achievements/trophies/whatever, maybe a shared in-universe currency so that games don't have to deal with the intricacies of all of the world's money markets (or at least do something like Steam does and provide a centralized API that games can use for real-world money transactions). That sort of thing. Build a foundation and then open it up for third parties to build the games (and other apps, if someone comes up with interesting things). VRChat almost kind of does that already, but their system is rather limited with regards to what third parties can do, and I'm pretty sure there's little to no moderation (which sounds good from the "free speech for everyone!" ideology, but it turns away a lot of your potential user base - can't really allow kids for example, a lot of religious or otherwise highly moralistic people will get turned away, etc - the same problems social media companies face already). There's also some "open" metaverses that are supposedly decentralized, but those are mostly flooded with NFT scammers from what I've seen so again, not really compatible with industry growth. And then there's the $800 elephant in the room. VR systems are still super expensive. Sure you can get cheap gimmicky things that you can sit your phone in that kind of work if you're really desperate to try VR without much cash, but a decent modern headset is still in the $500+ range, and if you want a full setup with trackers and 3D sound and whatnot you can easily start hitting $1000+. Even a "killer app" will have a hard time convincing people to drop that kind of cash. Of course like all technology time and adoption will drive down prices so this is a self-correcting problem: The major question is whether it will self-correct fast enough for VR to really take off this generation or if we'll have to wait another 15-20 years for someone to take yet another crack at bringing VR into the mainstream. The Oculus revolution is already like the 2nd or 3rd VR attempt (maybe even 4th?) and while it hasn't fizzled yet, its not really growing all that much either. Hopefully something will give it the kick it needs before it falls apart like its predecessors. (On the bright side, the current VR adoption is already a couple orders of magnitude higher than any previous attempt, so its likely to have a reasonable while before there's a real risk of the industry dying out again.)

I see one of the big questions for Meta (and it's Metaverse) is how do you persuade hundreds of millions, if not billions, of people to buy an expensive VR headset and sit, stand or whatever, for hours at a time in a virtual world, seperating yourself from reality in the process? Picking up a phone for 2 mins is spontaneous and doesn't require any thinking - you can do it pretty much anywhere with no impact while VR is the opposite. I know the 'real' world is not great right now, but it seems like Zuckerberg is banking on it getting so toxic that people just want to run away from it to his world (hint, not going to happen). We haven't even mentioned the 'trust' aspect either - FB/Meta is one of the least trustworthy companies on the planet.

Thats the only thing I dont agree with CF. I dont see metaverse or anything to that degree as future. Level of entry is just too high. You take out your phone anywhere and catch up on your socials. For VR, you would need to be in a safe space and dissociate yourself completely from reality and for what exactly ? So you can see poorly animated avatars of people instead of their real face ? I dont see this going any further than tech and gaming enthusiasts fooling around in a VR world, exploring and maybe playing something if its any good.

@@korosensei4384 learning via 3d world that you can't reach, such as ancient times, or medical surgery practices, hazardous experiments to be done safely in the virtual world, etc. VR can be a great tool imo, the hybrid sort of experiences when you can't be in a specific or remote place. The graphics maybe bad, but in the future those graphics can improve almost real, so the experiences will be almost real. Shopping is another example, we have limit of seeing the item we want in Amazon for example, even though they do have a video and lots of pictures, it is still limited. Maybe in the future, not only you can see 3D aspect of it from the Occulus, but maybe able to touch and feel as well, with some sort of 3D object that imitate the actual object. Who knows, it maybe even be able to create smell and taste without getting the sample. There are all kinds of possibility. Seeing poorly animated avatars are no different than seeing random strangers in the real world, so try to focus on the purpose of what the Metaverse can do. Zoom meeting via MetaVerse for remote users can be very useful as well, in many situations. Think about a school being a international one, so we maybe even to be able to get students from another side of the world and they can experience our schools, at least for momentarily if not for long. Today we live in a busy world and we can't do everything we want, I personally would like to use Metaverse than watching KZbin. If I want to go to the beach when I can't, use Occulus to go to the beach, hopefully in the future it will generate the realistic beach so that I can enjoy being there. Maybe setting up real cameras at the beach and transfer that into VR could make it the actual beach scene.

METAVERSE is the next big thing in terms of technological leaps imo. No one has more knowledge on this than META DUE TO THE MASSIVE INVESTMENTS they’ve been pumping into research. META looks trash now but so did early video games and the early smart phone, now look at these things. I suppose there's an extra cringe factor when meeting people in VR because of the mandatory engagement, silent treatment is much easier when you're not put on the spot and I think people don't like the idea that they feel a need to engage. Hey look it's your family member you don't want to talk to right now, only option is to exit in a rude manner and keep explaining how you have reoccurring connection problems, it would highlight a host of new connection issues that don't reflect the uptime statistics and Meta would waste billions trying to fix a problem that isn't there. 😂

Ha! Absolutely. Never thought about this. I can imagine it being awkwards if they add a feature to appear offline to someone or block them. You get together with a group of friends, forget you've blocked one of them and things get strange when someone mention your name and the person realises everyone is interacting with an avatar they can't see. Or someone mentions you the day after "Remember when we passed this group and such and such said this." "Such and such wasn't there last night." "uhhhh...yeah, must have been another night." People have a hard enough time figuring out bots sometimes XD I can only imagine the amount of grifts and catfishing that would go on in a virtual world if it had high fidelity. They should make the adds travelling sales men and give us a feature we can set where our avatar can spit in their faces. Might keep me on for at least a day.

Both approaches would be completely wrong. The metaverse wouldn’t be a singular platform but a large scale change in how humans interact with technology and the most notably the internet. Eventually it could become its own version of the internet where it serves as more of an abstract idea with various different platforms and uses offered. Ultimately its just an evolution in communication (at least what’s being described is). It wouldn’t consume our lives but would be highly convenient and how people choose to transmit art, ideas, verbal/nonverbal communication, etc.

Well I have never used Facebook, they may still have data collected about me because other people couldn't refuse to use it. If Facebook fails, other current industry giants may fail too. Doesn't sound so bad you may think? We will see. While Facebook didn't do a good job with regards to content moderation and privacy, we actually wanted them to improve things, not make them worse. If some investor gets a hold of all the collected data, then things will get worse. With Elon Musk having fun crashing Twitter, Social Media gets what it deserved from my point of view, but TikTok and other media don't bring much value to the table either. It feels like after Wikipedia and Google there was no product which made good use of Internet technology.

Maybe an unpopular opinion... I don't think that the Metaverse succeeding is the kind of thing we really need, much less want. I'm not trying to decry new technology for the sake of preserving the "old days" like we see so often, but it feels like there's something inherently dangerous about shifting all of our social contact to non-social business assets. I don't need an advertiser friendly lens through which I live my entire life.

For me, as a nearly 50 Facebook user, I like the balance of 'picture / verse' but I can't relate to the avatars and graphic style of the metaverse, despite being genuinely excited to explore VR. It looks like it was designed for toddlers. It doesn't even have that loveable retro Minecraft look. I find it creepy that a fully grown adult could perceive themselves in that environment. Too many years of playing triple A video games have me expecting a lot more. . Great video😊

Definitely try out VR Chat if you want to experience that social VR environment! Unless you want to just interact with people you already know, which is the most unappealing thing I can think of doing imo. There's so many great avatars in VR Chat; the first time I tried it, I happened to see someone with one of the most popular characters of a particular fanbase, and the person was nice enough to let me/tell me how to copy it.

Hey Dagogo when you use long cuts of other channels content, I would like it if you put credits and shout outs within the video. While I love your content, I’ve noticed not much of this happening for a few years now (maybe you have other arrangements/payments in the background but i dunno). The nature of youtube generally means you don’t lose (and may even gain) traffic, and can drive huge amounts of traffic to creators with much smaller subscriber bases.

@@RatusMax ok? and what stake exactly can Dagogo have in Elon? Stocks in some of his companies?? He's not big enough to have partnerships or contracts with Elon. Boogie2988, at the height of his popularity, talked about making around $100k a year _just_ through KZbin ads, and that's about right for most big channels. The huge extra income comes from sponsorships that are willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars upfront and merch sales. ColdFusion has no merch, and I think a few sponsorships but nothing that seems to be a big payment for him. So again, how can you claim the reason he isn't covering Musk is because he has some financial bias?
