Armstrong is surprisingly deep. He truly believes that what he’s doing is the best he can do, given his position, and there’s an argument to be had there, since he suggests that this war and child stealing would have happened no matter what. And on top of that, Armstrong and his ideology are the perfect counter to Raiden, at the place he’s at, when he encounters the Senator. You see, you may not have realized it, due to the monologue about memes, but the Monsoon fight was actually a major turning point for Raiden’s character, where he decided to accept the fact that, yes, he does enjoy killing, and many of the men he’s killed up to that point weren’t guilty of anything outside of desperately needing a paycheck. Raiden accepts that deep down, he is a monster, but against what Monsoon and Sam wanted, he decides to channel this in a positive direction so that his sword can remain a fool of justice, and he does this by choosing to kill those that use others as meet shields, like the winds of destruction. Throughout Raiden’s character journey in the Metal Gear games, a constant question plaguing him was “Do I believe this because I believe it, or because I was told to believe it?” It was a question that was front and center in MGS2, and continued to be his driving force in MGS4. And then here comes Armstrong, a man who’s core ideology is “Live for yourself, and not for anyone else”, and who is doing exactly what Raiden is doing, in that he’s committing mass murder in the name of justice. Their fight song even reflects that despite what he says, Raiden is actually conflicted on how he feels about the Senator, with the song saying “You are just like me, trying to make history… When our guard is down, I think we’d both agree… But in the end, it has to be this way” Raiden recognizes that Armstrong’s plan could actually work. Crazier things have in the Metal Gear universe. But unlike Raiden, his method involved the slaughter of innocent children, like George. And for that, Raiden had no choice but to cut him down. Of course, Raiden does still see the value in Armstrong’s ideology, and we see that he’s even adopted parts of it, in the post credits scene. Which also brings him full circle on his larger character arc, where now, he’s decided that it doesn’t f*cking matter if his ideals were forged by someone else, just so long as HE also believes in them. And I think that all of this adds so much to both of their characters. And the fact that all of this was achieved in the biggest meme of a boss fight of all time is f*cking jaw-droppingly amazing.

"Metal Gear Rising", the literal title of the game, is Raiden's arc. The guy accepts over the course of Metal Gear Solid 2, 4 and this game that he's as much a machine as the Rex and the Rays. Hideo is a bit heavy handed with the allegories, but I feel it's a style of story telling that translates well from Japanese to the West. Still a shame he never got to put out a Silent Hill game, considering that's a setting built entirely on allegory.

This just begs the question: when are we getting MGR:R on Broadway? It will make Hamilton look like a highschool production of Guys And Dolls. MORE. FULL. CONTACT. MUSICAL. THEATER. Plus after Stephen Sondheim's "Assassins," which is an entire show built around people who've attempted to murder US Presidents that includes Squeaky Frome (attempted against Gerald Ford) singing a torch song to Charles Manson, Broadway isn't exactly new to satires of American politics that are as brutal and bizarre as they are bloody. Get some of the same people who funded "Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark" to throw money at it, bring the original creative team on board to flesh out the plot a bit and write some additional songs, and faster than you can say "Turn off my pain inhibitors!" you got the next must see show.

They always hate every game that isn't MGS1 or Snake Eater. MGS2 was hated for a long time and it took a while for people to warm up to it. Twin Snakes is still hated for dumb reasons. @@Peasham Ehh, MGS4 did more to "ruin" his character arc. He had absolutely no reason to go back to the battlefield. MGR made it so that even with the fate he was given, he wasn't going to commit the same mistakes as before. In fact, from being outright manipulated in MGS2 to disobeying orders, breaking the law and doing what he feels is right in MGR, he has pretty much completed his character arc.

@@DonVigaDeFierro If it weren't for Jack the Ripper, I'd get your point, but... for better or worse, it's not fate that brought him back in MGS4. From the beginning, this series was about how people can change and how genetics and predestination don't matter one bit. MGS4 might've had Raiden slip back into a killer, which was bad enough, but Revengeance solidified that he HAS to be a killer, and that he cannot choose not to be a killer. MGS4 might've ruined Raiden more, but Revengeance ruined Raiden AND the point of the series definitively.

@@Peasham I disagree that it ruined Raiden's character, just added to the arc. And to say it ruined the point of the series is to forget that Hideo intended to quit after the second one. I think MGR is simply a once in a generation masterpiece, and I mean it from the bottom of my heart. Still one of my favorite things in this game, and one that I'm disappointed that more games don't do quite as enthusiastically. It works so well to let the energy ebb and flow with the way the boss fights do, highlighting the badass action parts while allowing the "rest" moments of the fight to feel more lowkey, like you're waiting for the right moment to strike next. Not only that, the boss themes all do a great job of highlighting that boss's theme and beliefs, giving the player a better background for some of the characters that don't get straightforward exposition about them, like Mistral.

I agree, but the series will never gain a similar amount of attention MGR has because it has much less mass appeal. Everyone loves batshit crazy action, lots of memeable moments, and easy to pick up gameplay and story. The MGS games however, stealth is the main focus, not everyone enjoys stealth. Controls are harder to pick up. The story telling is more serious than MGR and have long exposition cutscenes. And it's less accessible (in terms of how you can get these games).

It's not 100% apparent at the beginning of the fight, since the song has a very long start-up, but the lyrics of the final boss theme ONLY play when Raiden currently has the sword, and the song doesnt randomly restart or cut to a certain point either when this occurs; it continues at the exact point that Raiden loses/regains the sword.

@@LunaEllis I’d say that MGSV is the best choice for a Metal Gear game on Switch. It’s one of the most popular entries, has the best stealth gameplay of the series and is designed to be a bite sized experience with its mission structure which is great for a game on a portable console. It’s one of the best introductions to Metal Gear. Also the controls and camera are pretty good in MGSV compared to the older titles. So it should be easier for someone to learn the controls.

as for the blade mode aiming catastrophe, you *can* hit one of the slash buttons while holding down the analog stick in the direction you want. a bit wonky but works like a charm if you can free up a finger or two. you can even switch the panning and slash-aiming sticks in the options menu, if it helps. do keep in mind this makes aiming the turret in R-04 use the blade mode panning stick (thats the only other thing it affects for whatever reason)

you could describe pretty much anything off the wall and it would still be accurate about Revengance. I haven't played it again in a while though. every bit as batshit as Platinum's top catalogue. If you've had a bad day I'd recommend giving it a go, it's so surface level crazy and what the game allows you to pull off is so satisfying that you've had a good day by the time you put it down, it doesn't take long to learn what's linked to the zandatsu mechanic and it's very much worth learning the recent meme for Armstrong "source: I made it the fuck up" doesn't even sound too far off from what he actually says. he's a so over the top version of the worst of American values

MG rising is just so damn good. The music manages to condense so much of the usual slow, deep and often meandering and preachy monologues and cutscenes of metal gear into 3 minutes of metal. It manages to be both a Metal Gear game about political intrigue and the illuminati and also a nonstop action game with crazy fights and over the top enemies. Every song furthers the story, from Rules of nature to It has to be this way, they all serve to tell the player something about the situation, the world, the enemy you're fighting or the character you're playing as. And it is endlessly memeable. That helps, too

Man, the aiming in blade mod (specifically the throwing section) in Armstrong's battle just destroyed me and made me stuck in this battle for longer then expected. But I became so good in any other stage of the battle that I decided to ignore it all together (the life parts are worthless if you die before you get them), so I had to beat him without any life bonuses and so I did today. Fuck this aiming section (hitting his back when he heals or in the end is easier though)

About the last point of the video. If you press your weak or strong attack in blade mode it will default to a horizontal angled or vertically angled hit respectivly. Spamming it causes the attacks to randomly shift angle so you don't always hit the same place. But if you use the analog to aim your hit, the first button press will actually follow the line you set up with the stick. You can aim, let go of the stick and press attack for a precise cut without risking the joystick to screw the aim over.

I was putting off playing this game for a long time but played it like, 2 months ago and I don't exaggerate when I say it's my favorite action game of all time (topping games like GoW, the Arkham games, DMC, etc.) Its style is so brash and intense, the fact that I got no block button but instead only being able to parry was a turn-off at first but the game got me to the point where I avoid blocking in most games if there's a parry mechanic instead. The plot is silly? Maybe, but MGS4 had its fair share of silliness only toned down to show some respect at the fact that Snake was kicking the damn bucket. To me, the fact that the game can make me care about characters like Raiden, and through their DLCs Sam and Blade Wolf even beyond their silliness just shows how far this game goes. It's unfair to compare this to MGS4 or 3 since those games have a higher emphasis on stealth, but to me this game is on par with MGS3 with overall enjoyment. I never realized it until I was redoing my Armstrong boss fight for like the 5th turn, I hadn't memorized a boss' patterns to such a detail since I played KH2, and that only spoke levels of the overall game.

Woah my God I didn't expect to see a hyper competent review on an action game in a SaberSpark video. This guy seriously knows his stuff. I feel like so many reviews focus to much on how much they like it, how it's better than other things, or the story. Those things are relevant but so few talk about what it means to the genre and why it's sort of even with it's competitors. Personally if there was anything I'd add it'd be it'd be how it came out the same year as DmC and how they kind of mark an end to that era of genre defining action games before the next gen. They were both PS3 games and the last major action games on it along with Ninja Gaiden 3 I think. After them there was a bit of a lull in the genre where the only major things were Nioh and finally GoW. I'd say GoW 2018 was when the genre really started to make a comeback since a lot of people don't consider Nioh much of an action game but I'd say Nioh 2 definitely is with it taking from DMC and doing a lot of it's own stuff. Anyways it's because of that that it's even more of a missed opportunity it wouldn't get a sequel because it being lined up. It coming after MGSV and along side GoW, Nioh, and DMC would of earned a lot more much needed respect for the genre since most people look down on these sort of games.
