Can someone explain to me buying a stock and buying the put at the same time? Is that like shorting it? Don't the two just cancel each other out? I get you saying he's hedging it, so if it goes up, he wins on the buy but loses on the put, and vice versa if it goes down? If he's put, say $100 on the buy and $80 on the put, why not just buy for $20 and use the other $160 elsewhere for the same net effect? I'm clearly not understanding this 🙂
@m3drivr6 күн бұрын
It depends on the strike price, t's not 1:1 unless he's getting deep in the money puts. More likely, its going to buy him time to get out of his positions if the Chinese market turns down. Either way, it will cost him to have to puts. It's not perfect, but its the cost of hedging a large position or profits. I do it sometimes for earnings. to protect against a negative reaction as I want to lock in most of my gains. There's also a question of how long dated the puts are. Time costs money, we don't know the details but I suspect at least 3-5 months. Another point is though he is hedging 80% of his position (notional), we don't really know what its costing him because it depends on all the points above. It's not costing him $40M (puts are leveraged derivatives), but its probably capping his upside with the moves in the China market recently. I suspect that as the market peaks and retests, that he will have to make a decision of whether to pull the puts and let it ride. Not easy, the game is being played at the highest level here.
@livephysics28312 күн бұрын
Let's take an example of why ppl do this. Buy 100 shares of stock for $100/shr($10,000 investment.) Buy one put with a duration of a year and a strike price of $80(one put corresponds to 100 shares of the underlying security,) let's say this put costs $5/shr for a total of $500(this depends on many factors, see Black-Scholes equation.) Now- If the stock ends the year up, the money spent on the put is a loss and the put expires worthless. But let's say there's a calamity, and the stock price goes to $10/shr. The owner of the put can "put" the shares to the put seller at a price of $80/shr, which means sell the shares at $80, even though market price is $10. So in this case, the stock declined by 90%, but the shareholder who bought a put(for insurance) only lost 25%(the $20 loss in the shares and the put premium as well.) Hope this helped.

I dont think you can compare 2000 to 2024, the tech in our society ist like 100000x more! Back then no "normal" person had cellphone or a PC, or was using the internet, and dont forget that there is like 3x more money or more like back in 2000

Hard to pick market tops or bottoms. You also have to be careful about what data you choose to believe coming from China.

Instead of China, he should be bullish about India. Since China has had its bull run and under Xitler, Chinese economy will suffer recession and political crackdown. India has much brighter future due to long term democracy.

Lot of people in here are in delusion. Politics or market, people only believe what they want to !! Even if you think market ain’t going to crash, it’s always advisable to safeguard and diversify in the time of uncertainty.

Burry is not a good trader. One of the problems is everyone thinks the movie is accurate. It isn’t. Many people in the trading world started talking about a global asset bubble and collapse in 03/04. And everyone was expecting it by 06. The movie made it seem like it was just Burry and a few others. I remember in 03 discussing with my friend how to short real estate. Because at the time ppl were buying 10 houses and 10 condos in every new development and most didn’t have the income to support or even afford the down payment.

Ok. Here is another idea. Let’s say head wins. Throw a 100 coins and discard all the tails. Then keep repeating until one coin remains. Now interview the coin on its winning strategy. 🙄

there has been no anti trust actions for decades. We should have been splitting up these large companies to spur innovation and growth. Capitalism stagnates when only a few monopolies dominate the market

Its not capitalism if you ensure the big can't go bankrupt and are playing by different rules/constantly kicking down the ladder
