Totally rational moves. I have very similar ideas. I was 45% cash since Nov 2024, clearly missed the Trump rally but also avoided the subsequent fall during Christmas. However, rational thinking does not always get the right result because the market is irrational especially after Trump victory. Lots irrational exuberance in the markets now.

Lots of talk of the market being inflated. Do u think there will be a recession or downturn anytime soon? I recently came into a sum of money. I bought a house and paid off half of it. The rest is neutrally geared and just ticks away in the background. I barely even think about it. I still have around 400K cash though and would love to turn that into as much as possible of course but I’m uncertain about my next steps… Do u think now is a good time to invest in stocks, or should I wait for a more favourable opportunity?!

While nobody knows for certain. It's good to have a nice balanced portfolio, including cash on the side, so we're forever ready to trickle in when a downturn occurs. Having had my portfolio steered by a CFA I guess it's wise to choose experience and professionalism over financial videos online especially if you're looking to really get on the positive side of the market, following a systematic approach avoids you unseen mistakes and has gotten my startup of 200k - $1m+ in twenty seven months with downside risk:-)

Burry makes money shorting stocks. i.e. He profits when the market goes down. The majority of investors only make money when the market goes up. Thus, Burry is not a good example for the common investor to follow. Also, he's been right once. He's effectively a one hit wonder. This same message of him dumping stocks has been repeated ad nauseum for at least the last decade...every year...

Can someone explain to me buying a stock and buying the put at the same time? Is that like shorting it? Don't the two just cancel each other out? I get you saying he's hedging it, so if it goes up, he wins on the buy but loses on the put, and vice versa if it goes down? If he's put, say $100 on the buy and $80 on the put, why not just buy for $20 and use the other $160 elsewhere for the same net effect? I'm clearly not understanding this 🙂
@m3drivr
@m3drivr 6 күн бұрын
It depends on the strike price, t's not 1:1 unless he's getting deep in the money puts. More likely, its going to buy him time to get out of his positions if the Chinese market turns down. Either way, it will cost him to have to puts. It's not perfect, but its the cost of hedging a large position or profits. I do it sometimes for earnings. to protect against a negative reaction as I want to lock in most of my gains. There's also a question of how long dated the puts are. Time costs money, we don't know the details but I suspect at least 3-5 months. Another point is though he is hedging 80% of his position (notional), we don't really know what its costing him because it depends on all the points above. It's not costing him $40M (puts are leveraged derivatives), but its probably capping his upside with the moves in the China market recently. I suspect that as the market peaks and retests, that he will have to make a decision of whether to pull the puts and let it ride. Not easy, the game is being played at the highest level here.
@livephysics2831
@livephysics2831 2 күн бұрын
Let's take an example of why ppl do this. Buy 100 shares of stock for $100/shr($10,000 investment.) Buy one put with a duration of a year and a strike price of $80(one put corresponds to 100 shares of the underlying security,) let's say this put costs $5/shr for a total of $500(this depends on many factors, see Black-Scholes equation.) Now- If the stock ends the year up, the money spent on the put is a loss and the put expires worthless. But let's say there's a calamity, and the stock price goes to $10/shr. The owner of the put can "put" the shares to the put seller at a price of $80/shr, which means sell the shares at $80, even though market price is $10. So in this case, the stock declined by 90%, but the shareholder who bought a put(for insurance) only lost 25%(the $20 loss in the shares and the put premium as well.) Hope this helped.

I feel uneasy keeping my entire stock portfolio in US. And I'm sure so do many people. But the problem is: TINA. UK and EU is even more communist and woke than US, and additionally bleeding from the Ukrainian war. China is a great place to put your money, but... not for Westerners. Or at least not for the little people. I'm sure Buffet and Burry have access to better methods, but us plebs will get our stocks confiscated the moment war over Taiwan starts, just like we got our Russian stocks stolen from us. It's no coincidence HangSeng has been sucking since spring of 2022. Investors understood the message.

The correlation between Burry and a small retail investor = NONE. That would be like a single plumber working out of a van making decisions like he had a nationwide rotor rooter company.

Overall, 51% of traders anticipate that this year will be favorable for stocks, mutual funds, and other equity-based investments, despite the high returns currently offered by Treasury yields and other safer, cash-like options. I’m actively seeking market opportunities that could generate $1 million ahead of my retirement target in 2025.

Focusing on stocks with a history of stable, increasing dividends-even during economic downturns-can be a solid strategy. Alternatively, consulting a certified market strategist can provide valuable guidance on promising equities.

Absolutely. Having the right financial planner is critical. My portfolio is strategically diversified for all market conditions, and it recently achieved a 90% increase since early last year. My CFP and I are aiming for a seven-figure goal, though it may take until Q3 2024.

First the DeepSeek hit like a Mach 10 missile hit without the warhead. Now, with a nuclear warhead by an even more powerful Gwen2.5. The impact will be disastrous because it is open source too. My OH My. The Plunge Protection Team should have just allowed it to naturally continue its crash yesterday rather than prop it up to further sell today. This systemic disruption is going to be massively destructive.

Your example is not accurate because the S&P 500 does not provide a clear picture of individual stocks. Just because someone is an investor does not mean they understand everything. Sometimes, overthinking can derail both major companies and investors.

Burry is not a good trader. One of the problems is everyone thinks the movie is accurate. It isn’t. Many people in the trading world started talking about a global asset bubble and collapse in 03/04. And everyone was expecting it by 06. The movie made it seem like it was just Burry and a few others. I remember in 03 discussing with my friend how to short real estate. Because at the time ppl were buying 10 houses and 10 condos in every new development and most didn’t have the income to support or even afford the down payment.
