Jonathan Smith has assembled an elite coaching staff in East Lansing. The Spartans hired key pieces from Smith's old staff at Oregon State, adding Joe Rossi as defensive coordinator from Minnesota and retaining Courtney Hawkins as the wide receivers coach. To win in College Football, you must have elite coaches, and Michigan State Football has plenty of them, enough to make up a Top 10 staff nationally, in my opinion. Strength and conditioning coach Mike McDonald will give the Spartans athleticism and physicality they have not experienced since the 2013-2015 run under Mark Dantonio, and Smith and his coordinators will put their players in the best position to win. Make sure to comment so I can interact with you and answer any questions you have!

As an MSU fan, I agree with your opening remarks. Mel Tucker was an average at best coach who was in over his head and carried by a Heisman Caliber player in Kenneth Walker III. He never seemed like he had a true handle on the program, and was more focused on fielding a new team every year (hence his over reliance on the portal) and was never focused on building a program. College football is built through 3-4 year windows where teams gain chemistry and continuity. The issue with Tucker’s teams was that he was stubborn to a terrible fault, and he was too loyal to sub-par assets. Johnson, Hazelton, Els, etc…) I also realize now in hindsight that I disliked how Tucker carried himself, especially regarding press conferences. It always felt like the same 5 phrases came out of his mouth to answer every question. I also agree that his teams lacked discipline and execution in most aspects. The games that best show who Mel Tucker truly was as a coach are these, 2021 Purdue, 2022 Indiana. Games that were more than winnable, where the team wasn’t ready, and after they faced adversity they folded under the pressure. I am incredibly excited about MSU next year, and cannot wait to play Victory for MSU in the marching band for this team. Coach Smith is incredibly likable, he has the support of Izzo, Dantonio and Haller. He has a brand new state of the art facility. And he has an incredibly passionate and supportive group of alumni and donors. Thanks always for your wonderful analysis and Go Green!

I’m excited to see what Carter can do this year with an improved offensive line and a legit QB. He had a solid year last year running for his life. I think if our O-line play improves even marginally, which it should, he will run for 1,000 this year.

I honestly think with this staff, the people they pulled out of the portal, and what they salvaged from their recruiting class they can do some damage this year... they are still far away from being elite, but in 3-4 years they can be. I don't think its too much to ask to make a bowl game this year, and the playoff in 3.

The short Mel Tucker era was painful for Spartan players and fans. However, NOW, as tough as it was to go through the Mel Tucker embarrassment incident to totally disrupt last year, hiring Jonathan Smith may make it worth it all. This Coach and his magnetism to bring such talent already - assistant coaches, players, = like Aiden Chiles = indeed is likely worth all the pain and frustration. I sense great football 🏈 ahead for Spartans. And with the top 12 playoff, it is likely in a few years we will be in the playoff MIX. Yes -- that is possible and even PLAUSIBLE.

@collegefootballwithsam Ik this is offtopic but, if they hired Moore it would be a disaster for Michigan and here’s why. Sherron Moore is a good OC and won 4 games as an interim but during those interim games Harbaugh was there for the entire week helping the team practice for the game. Even with the practice they still struggled Vs Maryland, Penn state (only for first half) And Ohio State. If Moore gets hired, then that would mean he would have no Harbaugh because he left for the chargers and so Moore would not be ready.

I'm excited to know that Coach Smith will recruit the Midwest again. There are a lot of quality, hard-nosed football players in MIchigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania. I really don't think the overhaul will take that long.

How great was Kenneth Walker? He made the entire world think Mel Tucker could actually coach. Me included!! Walker was as great a college player as there has been in 30 years. Walker should have won the Heisman unanimously. THAT IS THE BIGGEST SHITHEAD AWARD EVER. I agree that this is a top ten staff Smith has assembled. The line coaching and physical conditioning is regarded as top level. The strength and conditioning coach may be the second most important man on a team. Next to the head coach. A great strength coach can push a player even beyond their dreams. A player of solid ability can outperform a better athlete if he is developed fully. Mark Dantonio was proof of that. Michigan State may not have recruited as many elite athletes. They just played that way. My favorite Spartan ever, Denicos Allen., said "We have two and three stars that play like fours and fives." Smith will trump what even Dantonio did. His coaching staff is as good or better, with a more imaginative approach. If Smith doesn't convince you of his talent, winning at Oregon State, what will? I believe that MSU will have a one year rebuild. After that it's game on.

You can disagree with me but I think as soon as Tuck signed the lucrative contract he did not care what happened to the football program. As a Michigan fan, I tried to warn some of you msu fans about Mel Tucker and that 2021 season. People want to talk about Mel getting his guys, when we had some good players on that team. I would not say you guys have one of the best coaching staffs in college football but better than what they had in the past. I think you guys will be in the same boat as us with the offense. I think msu will have a better defense this season if the can go back to an 4-3 or 3-4 type.

I’d take 5-7 in year one if the losses are competitive. Keep in mind, that’d be better than MSU’s ‘23 record in year four of the disastrous Tucker era. Smith is, at the very least, more of a proven commodity who has actually rebuilt a program and has gotten things done. Think he’ll do some good work w/ MSU. Rome wasn’t built in a day, after all.

I got high hopes for Demetrus Martin. MSU secondary has been awful ever since Dantonio left and I don’t think it was because of a lack of talent. Martins brought in a ton of talent everywhere he’s been and he’s developed that talent. Should be a lot of growth from the secondary group.

I would say 7-8. I am optimistic for the first time in a long time as an MSU fan, and I foresee the team being much more competitive offensively & defensively going forward. Definitely think 7-5 in year one is plausible, with a bowl win adding another notch in the win column to move State to 8-5.

As a Ohio State fan, I have always rooted for sparty also because of Ohio ties with Saban and Dantonio. I think Smith was a great hire, but I believe he is a program guy and maybe not a quick turn around. It looks like 7 wins to me as long as they don't lose a winnable game. I won't be surprised if they are a 10 win team come 2026, with 8 maybe 9 in 2025. I think they might be the big winners in the Michigan shake-up
