I agree, but the sad truth is that there are people out there who would refuse to be treated by military personal, just as there are people who would refuse treatment by homosexual people, non-white people Etc. Avoiding being a uniform is a small sacrifice when you consider the headache of people refusing treatment because of someone clothes.

Would be a nice idea but 1. All the patients would be constantly asking about it and distracting from critical care and 2. Military uniforms aren't designed to be sterilised daily.
@jamesj9288

That distracts from the care being given. This isn’t the time to be showing off a uniform, it’s about giving the best care possible. One team, one uniform.

If the Ambulances did not have to wait so long at the hospitals we would have enough ambulances. We need more doctors and nurses to stop the backlog. More drivers would just mean more Ambulances cuing outside the hospitals.

pax und peace the military often work in emergency response, remember when all the firefighters went on strike, any time there is flooding, providing the security for the olympics, the military adapts to what ever it needs to be. Taking funding from that and putting it in just one places won’t work. What happens next time there is a natural disaster they won’t send nurses in.

Meanwhile the creeping privatisation of the ambulance service goes on. In London during the week 25% of coverage is provided by St John's and others, that goes up to 35% at the weekend. The St John's crews are full time paid employees not volunteers. Their vehicles are fairly modern and almost the same spec as front line ambulances. However the crews are paid less than NHS staff and because St John charge a lot more than it costs for an NHS vehicle and crew it's a good little earner. NHS ambulance services have been refused increases in staff and vehicles and ORDERED to use private provision even though it's more costly. This is happening countrywide. On Merseyside west midlands ambulance service won the contract to provide non emergency ambulance cover, however they deliberately tendered low and then threatened to void the contract because it wasn't profitable enough. North west ambulance service were over a barrel and had to cough up funds they could ill afford.

freshprince 84 Emergency response driving is a difficult thing, and vastly different to any other type of driving.
@danh3017

For a start youll probably find SCAS vehicle insurance demands that if a vehicle is to be driven under emergency conditions then the driver must be adequately trained and tested to do so, there are many exemptions an driver of an emergency response vehicle can claim and many of them arent used often but when they are can be incredibly dangerous.

@@CymruEmergencyResponder interesting my neighbour in the SW is an emergency care assistant. In his words, he drives it, they work it but hey ho, I consider myself corrected. The OP is right, why aren't they training the 3rd year paramedics to drive in that case, opting to train a royal signals communicator instead?

Stop shouting Pal. And yes we knew some Yank would be in here gobbing off and crapping on the UK's methods. Well things have changed since 1990, we have different H & S rules here and we have a different health system. For example our ambulance service is free at the point of use. Unlike the USA.
