Forces TV has been given rare access to a mission aboard one of NATO’s “eyes in the sky”. A fleet of Airborne Warning and Control Surveillance aircraft or AWACS is based at Geilenkirchen in Germany. Since Moscow's annexation of Crimea in 2014, AWACS patrols have supported NATO assurance measures to keep airspace safe over countries near Russia like the Baltic States and Poland.

My old CFI in flight school was an old flight engineer on the 777 E3, he had lots of interesting stories. Apparently they're hell for the crew because they have no water reintroduced back into the air, due to the electronics so you have to constantly drink water, else you get big dehydration headaches.

The Cheshire Cat I’m sure your right but I thought that would cause air humidity to drop to below 10% and when this is the case static electricity builds up more quickly. They are probably trying to save weight because carrying water to re circulate into air for 10 hours will 100% effect airplane efficiency.

The airframes are still in excellent condition. The electronic equipment is becoming smaller, lighter, more energy efficient and better at the task in hand. So why change? When the radars can no longer be upgraded, that will be the time to change.

@@SC-om3wy It's hilariously outdated. I won't go into too much detail here, but part of the reason so many personnel are required onboard is because the air tracks are almost entirely identified and categorized manually. Exporting to data link is also done manually. The mission computer subsystem is less powerful than a modern smartphone.

English Andy......infrared satellites can detect heavy bombers, and fighter jets staying high in space......Spy satellites can detect surface warships and SIGINT / ELINT satellites detect/collect all radar emissions over an area .........but AWACS can detect, track targets over long ranges, it provides targets information in azimuth, range and elevation....... satellite can track targets (by it's infrared signature) and the target information provided isn't accurate, will vary many miles in range, or azimuth/elevation with the real target.......but a network of low orbiting satellites could still share information in real time
