In Spain we also use a flat sheet. It's way hygienic to use it and it saves you the trouble of washing your duvet cover too often because it doesn't get "as dirty" having the flat sheet between the duvet cover and you Edit: lol a lot of you are getting confused with the "hygienic" part. What I meant is that, given that the duvet cover is harder to take off, wash change, etc, it's something that ppl may not do that often so having a sheet in between that is easier to take off means it'll be washed more often, that's why I said hygienic. Maybe not the best word but you get the point

Never happened to me before, either. I have a linen duvet cover so maybe it's extra grippy on the cotton top sheet. I use the top sheet so I don't have to wash the duvet cover so often. Some people apparently don't even have those and just wash their blanket weekly. Not even an option for me as my comforter is full of wool batting and needs to be dry cleaned (I can't sleep with polyester, it's suffocating, plus I'm trying to eliminate polyester and acrylic fabrics from my home anyway). So that thing is only getting washed once or twice a year, as is recommended.

It's a hygiene issue and should depend on your choice of blanket. Quilts are bulky and sometimes delicate and do not wash well. A top sheet will absorb the sweat and skin particles you shed while sleeping. Duvet covers can be laundered easily enough and therefore, a top sheet can be forgone.

This makes me laugh. I use a flat sheet, even when camping, for a few reasons: it means your blankets are protected from shedding skin cells and body oils onto the blankets, which are harder to clean. It's also, oddly enough, a really good insulating layer. I even use a flat sheet INSIDE MY SLEEPING BAG when camping. It adds a lot of warmth without adding weight. And they are useful for other things as well. I've recycled them into curtains or clothes, table cloths, or even tied my laundry up in them. Some of those things a duvet cover will do, some not. But I can't find them in any of the local stores, in the sizes I need, and they're a lot more work! It DOES NOT take longer, and they won't come undone, if you do it right.

Most ppl who dont use flat sheets have something called a duvet (im guessing what you would consider a comforter) that has a cover that's the same thickness as a bedsheet that goes over the mattress or the pillowcase. In Europe we have duvet covers (kinda like a pillow case but for your blanket/duvet), and some of them have juste a narrow opening at one end so you don't have to tie/button up anything, others have ties or buttons. Once you get the hang of it it's actually quite easy to put it on (there are several techniques). And in the summer you can just ditch the blanket and only keep the duvet cover (it's not much heavier than a flat sheet). I couldn't imagine using a flat sheet because ok, it adds a layer between your body and the uncovered blanket (if it even stays put the whole night which really doesn't always happen...), but only on one side. Except that I often have my arms on the outside of the blanket, sometimes a leg out or even kind of "hugging" my blanket which means I would definitely touch it and dirty it if I had only a flat sheet which is unhygienic, so overall a hard pass for me. Also, when you don't have a washing machine or only a small one (which is common over here), it's a real pain to wash your blanket because you have to use a laundramat, but with a duvet cover you can definitely wash your blanket only once a year or smth (if you wash your sheets often enough of course), so less of a pain overall.

The reason flat sheets are important in hotels is that a lot of people sleep directly on the blanket and it isn’t worth it for the hotel to clean your blanket every time someone checks out because you can only put 2 maybe 3 in a washer before it gets too heavy and starts destroying the washer. That flat sheet acts as a barrier between whatever the last person did with the blanket and yourself so please use the flat sheet. You're not making your bed properly then. The flat sheet should be pulled taught, the comforter or quilt put on top, but shifted down 4 to 10 inches (depending on your preference). Then you fold the top of the flat sheet over the top of the comforter. The flat sheet gets tucked in at your feet and a few feet up the sides to hold it in place. The comforter never gets tucked in. The more you fold the flat sheet over, the better it will hold. I recommend you fold it over a good way. Also if you're tossing and turning so much as to cause the sheets to separate, maybe try sleeping with a thinner blanket (you're probably getting hot), or padding (could be uncomfortable), or turning your thermostat down a few degrees at night (which makes you sleep better).

USE A FLAT SHEET FOR PETE’s SAKE!!!! I have a goose down duvet which is in a decorative duvet cover and I do not wash it every time I wash or change my sheets, there fore the flat sheet offers a protective barrier from my body to the duvet. I can also 100% tell you that my flat sheet never gets kicked to the bottom of my bed either! FYI hotels do not change/wash their comforters each time a guest leave, so you’d better hope they use flat sheet for hygiene sake😮

This. I'm in the UK, use a flat sheet and have never ended up with the flat sheet at the bottom of the bed. It is tucked under the matress and stays tucked on two and half sides. Obs top is untucked and part of side I get in on. Also I dislike fitted sheets, they are impossible to fold neatly after ironing. With TWO flat sheets er you can even up wear on the two sheets, since the bottom sheet gets more wear and also flip end for end so your heels dont wear a thin patch in the sheet so soon. The extra time for making bed is a complete red herring it is like an extra minute a day, if that.

I have never heard about flat sheet before😂 Had to google it. Once I saw flat sheet in hotel and didn't know what it was so I just took it off because it was on my way😂 Edit: I read more comments and I think this is climate related. I always use a thick duvet with a cover and it's never too hot. In my area in summers temperature hardly gets over 20°C(like 70fahrenheit) and in winters temperature is usually between -10 and -30°C (about10 to -20 fahrenheit). Here no one uses flat sheets or just blankets as it would get too cold.
@kennedyeckels4492

I disagree about your climate reasoning for the flat sheet. The flat sheet is supposed to go between your body and the duvet/comforter/blanket so that you don’t have to wash your nicer or heavier blankets as often, only the smaller lighter thinner linens are frequently washed. Personally, I don’t use it though and wash my covers just as often as the sheets. That being said, I am from the US and, despite a couple of the comments I’ve seen here, I literally have never met a single person in my life that only sleeps with the flat sheet on top of them. It’s either the flat sheet and the blanket of choice or only the blanket of choice. If I ever meet a sole-flat-sheeter I will immediately assume they’re a psychopath.

I'm a flat sheet loving millenial, i just prefer a sheet between me and my covers. This is not because it keeps the blankets and covers clean, i have too many pets, i wash it often. And not because my covers aren't snuggly and soft, they are, super snuggle and soft. It's because sheets are just fresher, they make sure I don't overheat and they feel nice. However, in my household, they're dying. I'm the only one that uses them, my husband hates the sheets, my daughter does too, and as far as making the bed takes longer, it does, but I'm also a housewife, so it's not like a minute more of fixing the flat sheet will make much of a difference.

If I get a room without a flat sheet, either bring one up or I'm checking out. I can't sleep without one and find it just gross to not have one.

I'm an older millennial who lives in Florida. I love my flat sheet. Normally my husband and I each have our own. Sometimes it's all we use. But my inlaws don't use them, so I get all their flat sheets. Sometimes I use the flat sheet as a fitted sheet too, it stays on just about as well as a fitted it tucked properly. ❤️

I’m from Canada and I hated sleeping with a flat sheet growing up. I never put one on my bed and I had terrible night terrors that would cause me to get tangled up and panic more when I had to sleep in a bed with one. (The terrors were unrelated but waking was worse.) When I went backpacking in Europe, I stayed in hostels and slept in a sleep bag either under the provided comforter or in my sleeping bag and got more used to it. When I came home, I went back to sleeping without the top sheet. When my partner and I moved in together I noticed how quickly our comforter would get smelly and without a duvet cover, I would have to haul the thing up and down from the laundry room and go through the torture or trying to dry it every few weeks. Eventually, I broke down and started putting the top sheet on the bed (which my partner prefers anyways). It really helped with cleanliness of the bed and, as I now have medication for my sleep disorder, I no longer thrash in my sleep which means I don’t worry about waking up trapped in my bed. It still can’t be tucked in at the end of the bed but I’m kinda glad to have it. Especially on hot summer nights when the comforter is just too much.

Huh, I never saw the flat sheet anywhere except in hotels, and until now I thought they were a way for the hotels to tell us: "Yeah, we're too cheap to provide an actual blanket"

I haven't used a flat sheet in YEARS. I hate that stupid thing. It tangles around my legs and makes me feel like I can't move. Even going to hotels that still have it, I pull it off and fold it up to put to the side on a table or something so it isn't in the way. (It also makes it easier for housekeeping to find because most of the time they're required to put it back when they make the bed up.)

Also, the fluffier blanket is a much preferred texture for people with extremely sensitive skin such as mine because itchy, rough, and generally not fun textures are more easily noticed on flat sheets.

I've literally never use the flat sheet. I find that if you have pets of any kind, you usually have to wash your covers and stuff anyway, so I don't even bother. My landlord pays for water anyway, so I don't really care about washing it. I also don't bother making my bed. I don't really care if it gets wrinkled.

I always use a flat sheet. It allows for more airflow between you and your quilt. This allows heat to escape so you don't get too hot. Also, in the summer, I can't sleep without a blanket and a flat sheet is perfect since it's super light. Only crazy people use a quilt when it's hot.
@Duke00x
@Duke00x Жыл бұрын
It helps move air and heat away from the body but also traps it between itself and the blanket instead of it going from you to the blanket directly and then out into the room. So while you feel less suffocated by the heat you actually have more around you acting like insulation and keeping the colder room from taking it from your body as fast keeping you warmer longer. And yes it is a great replacement for a blanket on warm nights where it is too hot for a blanket but too cool not to have one.

There's a thing that has surprised me a lot about other countries. In Denmark, and maybe other Scandinavian countries, we don't sleep under blankets. We have this thing, which in Danish is called a "dyne", and it's like a blanket but stuffed with goose feathers or other insulating material. I personally think that's it's so comfortable and warm, that i can't even sleep without it. So imagine my surprise when i learned that it was only a regional thing.
@carnifaxx
@carnifaxx Жыл бұрын
it's used also in Central Europe, there are even specialized cleaners for goose feather blankets in our country, who can somehow clean the insides and put them into new fabric, so it can be used for decades this way. I have my duvet inherited from my grandmother and it's still ok.

I was so confused by all these comments too. In germany all blankets are filled for isolation. Less in summer more in winter. And we have a case for them like for pillows. They mostly come in pairs too so your pillow matches the blanket. And under that we only have fitted sheets and mattress. Army has non fitted sheets tho. Such anspinne in the ass having to redo them every morning

@@busch_ii7450 I think part of the confusion is that they use those huge double duvets and put a cover on them may be more difficult than on single ones as is used in Europe. I think there was quite a discussion about it in comments under recent Cecilia Blomdahl's video (short).
