Personally I find the internet absolutely exhausting to be part of nowadays. It's not that it "used to be better", more that I preferred when it was quieter, less commercialised. There's still brilliant content being created online, which should be celebrated, but man is it being covered under an ever-expanding blanket of soot.

This is why formats like video essays are thriving now, they avoid age demographics and instead aim for people who just wanna learn about niche perspectives or have 2 hours of analysis to think about as they do, effectively using it like radio was used during car trips. I feel using minecraft as the visual background for such content would be a perfect fit for the new issues in the genre, but that does kinda sidestep the issues with the platform as a whole you mentioned, pff. Tysm for making the video!!

I feel like Minecraft isn't becoming boring simply because of bad updates, and lazy development. The community itself also plays a major role in this. They no longer try to change the styll of gameplay, or the content KZbinrs generate. They simply don't want to innovate.

Seeing how different the old is to the new I totally agree. Seeing how different the old is to the new I totally agree. There are some who fight it but for the most part people like Sethbling and SimplySarc are few and far between. No one is innovating the game to their needs nor going beyond the status quo, it’s all a blur and tbh it’s sad. I can’t tell the difference between some of the Minecraft KZbinrs because of the 100 day thing and when it gets to that point you KNOW it’s bad. You can’t even search up a specific title because they have so many things in common!! The last time I think we saw innovation was the 100 days and even some of Dream’s stuff and although boring now and not my cup of tea it hit the algorithm just right that very few have been attempting something different. It sucks that fake narratives have been so popular too, I miss the old days of people roleplaying and it being seen as RP, like The Yogscast Tekkit series. Back then there were some scripted things but that didn’t take away from the actual moments and I feel like they weren’t trying to sell them as real either. I get why reality TV was replicated and it’s been apart of MC with “School Roleplay” from back in the day but it wasn’t just that and now wherever you look it all seems fake. It doesn’t help that some are blatantly lying for views and clicks- it really just shows how times have evolved, it’s not about having some fun on a server it’s about making $ which is one thing that has changed as a whole on YT. I honestly get why what I want to watch died out and why it’s okay for the change to streamlining of videos but the game and content is 100% something that can be better. I’ll be sitting here waving my fists and hoping for the uniqueness and even some nostalgia bait like different long running series’ and that’s really alright with me. Thanks for coming to my ramble.

@@HungryWarden Pretty much everything? You may be right but that’s just a silly argument since there is still more one could do to innovate the game and make videos. From making your own modpack to the way you present your videos, a KZbinr can do way more to make something interesting or unique enough and to make it not be the same old same old. They have the resources too, many of the older MC dudes who innovated the game show ways you can change things up which many have used since command blocks exist. I’ve seen a lot of good content come from MC both old and new but I honestly think there’s more untapped potential that would create more buzz and help the community stay less boring.

One of the main draws for me to toycat's channel is that his vids are aimed at adults. I'm in my late 30s and got into MC as part of the older crowd that joined during the pandemic. I was really getting sick of finding MC vids with interesting premises only to realise it was content for kids and so it was a real godsend when I discovered toycat also made MC vids (I was subscribed to his geography channel first). Lol I actually commented on my surprise about this on his other channel but everyone thought I was just trying to be funny.
@TheJacklikesvideos
@TheJacklikesvideos 4 ай бұрын
if you think toycat's content is aimed for adults, you might be a literal child. nobody making content with an adult audience in mind talks like the lady at a daycare. posting memes with swears is super mature, especially when you do it just to censor them because you are catered towards an immature audience in a game marketed towards kids. he at least talks about higher concepts an older audience can be interested in, hence i'm here, but there's just a dearth of content on some of these topics and he is at least cool enough to cover them. he does have videos more original than other creators like this one.

Thanks for the honesty, and I honestly do agree with most of what's been said, but I think this is part of an overarching problem with platforms like TikTok (or any trying to replicate TikTok) and the short attention span type of content we're headed for. Older movies with slower pacing can almost be unwatchable for me at times when they used to be engaging, and that in combination with seeing kids (of my age at that time) also finding slower paced content unwatchable is concerning. The addictive potential of the internet is now being fully exploited.

Something important worth considering is modern youtube is an optimised dopamine farm. Almost every video I see on the platform is a series of high moments chained back to back to back, I thought I'd be safe avoiding having my brain rotted by only watching shorts content but it took me a long time to realise the long videos I like are effectively just a series of shorts compiled together in a cohesive storyline. It's addictive to click on a video and get instant gratification, instantly feel happy seeing the high moment, then another high moment and another. But it destroys your dopamine, it makes you depressed, your attention span is worse, but the button to watch something entertaining is always just a click away. Modern youtube isn't built to be a place to talk about yourself and your life, it's a dopamine farm and it's a very well optimised one. It's not on the viewer to just "watch what they want to see", it's on the viewer to break out on an intentionally highly addictive cycle youtube itself has created.

He died like half way through his 100 days and “started over” (he told his audience this immediately and just continued playing with a “second” life) I admired him for saying it outright and just saying “I fudged staying in the world so I can continue playing with my friends and making content” There was some hilarious moments after that too. Though you make some good points about Catering and the like, if you note my most successful videos personally are Train crashes done through mods, it really shows what people seem to like and how even using mods and the like is another part of the common thing these days, as modded title videos get so many views, as opposed to the failure that was my attempt at an earlier Let’s Play in Vanilla game. I still learn things much better from watching people legitimately playing the game and that makes watching the video worth my time. I also prefer watching them in my own time rather than watching Live on the streamers' schedules. (ETA: Live streams are also filled with a lot of interacting with the chat; whereas an honestly edited and instructional Let's Play cuts out that sort of stuff and, again, makes it worth my time to watch it.) There are still a few content creators still doing that sort of informative series on Minecraft (just incorporating the updates) - Pixlriffs' Survival Guide comes immediately to mind and he's one of my favorite Minecraft content creators. It's just that there are more and more people making the "hyped" content (like 100 days and other "sensationalized" and often faked challenges) and that means the viewer just has to look harder for the quality, more educational content that is still out there.

It's the truth like this which makes someone like me realize the content I want to make is in the past and the idea of going back to "the good days" is long gone. This video is hard for me because not only is it crushing my hopes, it's also making me realize how bad the worlds become. to make it worse most if not all the creators who inspired me are either gone or following the formula layed out in most of this video.

Honestly what makes it worse is waiting for so long knowing I wanted to make content like Stampy's only for it to now feel like you're forced into making this slop overproduced garbage to gain traction. People can defend who they want, and hell I like LTN's original 100 days since it was fresh and new, but now it's over done, the idea and uniqueness has dried up and devolved to people doing the bare minimum for views and a fat check. It's no longer people doing it because they enjoy making videos, which is what made old minecraft so fun, people truly put themselves into the content, they laughed, had fun, messed around with each other, they used THEIR personality in videos, unlike modern minecraft, not naming names, but they all feel fake, some are just annoying and others are super holier than thou with their opinions. Now that's not to say playing a character is bad, it just means you need to put more thought into it like Stampy did towards the end of Lovely World and like he did for his helpers, they were no longer just his friends joining him, they were specifically designed characters to put distance between him and some of his former friends because of what they did (Lee and Lionmaker being the main examples). All together I think minecraft content is just far too over produced both in the size of the teams and the beating a dead horse with ideas, no large creators make unique original ideas anymore which doesn't make sense given the amount of people who work on them, you'd think that many eyes and brains would come up with unique new ideas, but they all stick to what's safe instead of making their own path through the KZbin Landscape, it feels more and more like the days of innovating entertainment are over, large studios like Marvel can do the same stuff and still find success and that same issue is happening on KZbin and the gaming industry, and much like the movie, tv, and gaming industries the smaller creators are putting more passion and effort into videos than large multi million subscriber channels.

I've wondered from time to time, If some creator's challenges are genuine or whether or not they really spent a 100 in-game days doing a thing. I don't know if it's important but if creators keep trying to outdo one another for views, It will most definitely lead to more and more videos being either incredibly difficult to produce or just impossible to do without deception.

The real reason we have so many more vandals on Minecraft than we did before is simpler than you might think: * Those vandals, who are morally questionable, have always existed. In the past, many of them weren't brave enough to try the things that they do now. As they saw others doing morally questionable things, became more and more comfortable with satisfying their evil desires. Also, the Minecraft community is very huge now, and many of the vandals just didn't realize how much opportunity there was for the Minecraft community to be exploited and deceived. Now that they are aware of the opportunity, they are simply doing what they naturally want to do: lying to others for their own profit. As some would put it "How bad can I possibly be? I'm justing doing what comes naturally to me."

>In the past, many of them weren't brave enough to try the things that they do now. Correction, they simply didnt get much attention. Those who did were likely the funny ones who were comically bad at hiding it. >As they saw others doing morally questionable things, became more and more comfortable with satisfying their evil desires. This feels like you ripped it out of The Funny Worship Book. It's (most of the time) not outright evil, it's *selfish.* (Or Lazy) >they are simply doing what they naturally want to do: lying to others for their own profit. As far as some youtubers go: They lie to ensure they can keep making content, and keep getting views. Everyone wants to be successful, some people will be happy letting RNG decide if they take off, some want to ensure they have THE best chances.

I wanted and tried to make videos back in 2013. I remember all the major Minecraft youtubers at the time all had at least one thing that would set them apart from their peers, even if they were doing a mod review on the same mod, or playing the same adventure map. There was once a personality behind all the Minecraft youtubers of the past, that has just been lost... This personality most certainly had an impact on the people that once watched that content my, self included. Which is why its so painful to see the state of Minecraft KZbin as it is now. I feel like I could confidently say that if I saw Minecraft KZbin as it is today I would not be nearly as inspired as I was 10 years ago.

The way to have a good consumer experience with Minecraft KZbin content is to curate it for yourself. I mainly watch Toycat, PhoenixSC, a couple of advanced redstoners, and a handful of Hermits. I never visit the Minecraft topic page to see what's popular, and I only watch videos from my recommendations if they seem legitimate and interesting/useful to me as a player. Anything that seems overly hyped up or sensational is something I actively avoid. I won't even watch a tutorial for a farm that seems like it might actually be good, if the person giving the tutorial is just a little too enthusiastic about it. There is enough intrinsic value in Minecraft the game itself (as opposed to the cultural phenomenon around it) to make it worth my time and attention as a player and as a KZbin viewer, and I'm not interested in content that tries to artificially fabricate reasons for me to watch it, because I feel that it devalues the game itself.

The whole world has changed - and not necessarily for good. :-( Sad. I am turning 75 this year. And I still love to play minecraft. I just learned about cheats last year! Yup... And editing. And I always wanted to know how a person could float around building like they did. I finally found out in creative. Yup. LOL I finally did some builds with creative.. it was fun. I used cheats so I could find my village again - I just wanted to be able to find my village. I used to find them by doing f3 and then doing that every so often to make sure I was headed in right direction and I found it the hard way - or if I forgot to get coordinates I just flat lost my village. LOL But regardless it's just me playing so hey, I play survival without cheats, I play it with cheats, I do creative some to make my biggest build I think in December. My computer crashed two weeks ago. Oh yeah. There went my worlds. I had not saved them on a stick or an exterior drive or whatever. I did that big auto sorter for inventory and my goodness it was really nice and was huge. Gone gone gone..... I have another computer, but it will take me a while to get my excitement to play MC again.. I tried a couple days ago - did a place to do village under "fake" lake and I have mods for the first time and shaders. It's fun - but under the fake lake was really hard to see - and it just wasn't the same. Hmmmm. So I will get back to it - just have to take a week off, I guess. But it has changed. People are making millions - and I just play mine for fun and make zip - I do so enjoy it. If I could just record as I played and throw it on a channel and if people like it fine- if not - I don't give a HOOT! :-) That would be ok.. but now people want way out there - no matter what you have on your YT channel. I am not way out there. :-) God Bless! Here's to MC. The ole granny!

This is also a problem in the poke-tuber space. You'll see them do a whole intro spiel and setup required for a challenge or some mysterious email they received and then start up the actual challenge in which they conveniently forgot to mention they are in emulator and start using the speed-up hack or some other detail rather than trying to be as vanilla as possible. There are also some that are blatantly hacked on console in which they attempt to use editing or commentary, usually with others, to mask the fact. I'd say that the best types of KZbinrs to watch are ones that usually come from a background from a traditional career rather than those that tried to force playing games on KZbin as their career, there are a couple that are like this and their realism comes across on camera as more legit over these lairs that exist in elite groups.

I recently found a duo of friends who made very nice mc videos in the latest version. They made a decent couple of episodes in a world, and I enjoyed watching their simple editing and building. They stopped uploading recently. Obviously, they were small so they didn't have a reason to keep going, but I loved watching their videos and it's tragic to me that if the video doesn't have 10k cuts per second then people just click off. I remember watching a lot of the big golden age Minecraft KZbinrs in 2013-15, and I was 10-12. I slowly stopped watching many of them as it felt like their content was getting younger as I was getting older, as well as feeling more repetitive and boring as a result of more frequent uploads. I still respect many of them and recognize what they did was to make a living, but it did ultimately lead to me no longer watching them.

Most minecraft content that feels real these days is either in a commentary format or (usually smaller) creators making a challenge series and recording their work in a live stream. In my opinion, the most effective way to make content that feels more real is by essentially streaming the whole thing uncut and live on a streaming channel, then making a summary preferably with narration and cutting out the boring bits. This has the downside that streams can require a lot of set-up and can be hours of live footage without taking breaks.
