Update for people wanting Thai visas. As of June 2024, the Thai Consulate is only taking people with appointments. Appointments can only be scheduled 14 days in advance on their website. All slots were full in mid-June 2024. They say new slots open at midnight. I like the hotel that Todd, Neenee, and Mina stayed in, but it was full. We stayed at the fairly new Meksavan Guesthouse ($16) which is upriver from the place where they have the restaurant boats.

I first went to Savannakhek back in 2010. Most of the foreigners(French mostly) hung out at the Mekong Hotel right on the river. It really had a peaceful; almost "going back in time vibe" which I really liked, but at times was very boring. That being said it looks much different now than back then, and I suppose its not a bad thing that it has "evolved" into a place which more foreigners want to live.

The contrast in appreciation of the riverbank area was interesting, you and Neenee compared it to Vientiane, and Mina didn't give a bugger where it was as long as she was there, she exploded with excitement as soon as you arrived and remained that way, that was the best endorsement for the development of the riverbank.

Wow, Savannakhet looks great and I agree with you about Vientiane. When we were there in Jan. 2017, the night market by the river was fun and the concrete bleachers along the bank (you showed in the vid) were a great place to eat and watch sunset, The park that was already there seemed nice, just needed some additional attractions like you showed here. Not sure what they were thinking with the new market surrounded by the black and gray wall that looks like a prison. We haven't made a plan yet to go down to Savannakhet but looks like we really should!

The new night market in savannakhet is open for about a year now. The city has seen a lot of great developement recently. I love to travel a lot, but chose savannakhet as a home base now as my fiancee is phu-tai from the province. Its so affordable, has great food & coffeeshops. There are some expats around, but you have to look for them 555. A lovely colonial style town right on the mekong with the best sunsets. Been to Vientiane again some months ago and was happy to come back to savannakhet after 😁 its just so relaxed with a high quality of life. Always up for some beerlao 🍻

Great one Todd. Looks like a great place, love all the improvements. You are right, if Vientiane were to do the same or similar, it would make it a much more attractive place for residents and tourists alike. Fantastic storm at the end! Unfortunately it was a storm such as that which flattened our entire rice crop! We are hopeful that if the weather here in rural Khon Kaen stays as it is without any more rain, that the rice will dry out sufficiently for us to rescue some of the crop. Anyway, what will be will be. Thanks again for sharing. God bless you, Neenee and Meena 😀❤🙏

Hi, my very first comment in your channel though I'm a "submarine" here for a while :))))) Savannakhet is an endearing destination for lots of Vietnamese folks, especially North Viet retired soldiers who once fought the US as it's a key shelter place and battlefield. Kaysone Phomvihane sounds totally foreign and unfamiliar to us, smacking of some personality cult haha. I was somehow interested in Savannakhet for the first time through videos by Jehp Nanj (maybe a Thai girl?) and her Long pizzeria and affiliating pub Le Corbeau, nested in an ornately and very Oriental villa. Long is by and large acclaimed as the best Napolitanean pizza in town. The vibe is so relaxing, and life is worth our toils with a thin crusted pizza and cup of latte. A must-try maybe?
