A prolonged economic recession in China’s northeast is behind the movement of more than 1.6 million people from the region since 2013, according to Chinese media reports. Most of the people have relocated to southern provinces including Hainan and Guangdong chasing warmer weather and better jobs. In recent years, Yunnan has also become a popular destination for people from the northeast, since the southwestern province has not only a relatively mild climate, but also cheaper living costs and booming tourism industry. The shift of population in the northeast has become a hot topic at China’s major annual political meetings, commonly known as the “two sessions”.

Southern Chinese normally speaks a variety of dialects, so it’s really more complicated than you think, for example in southwest China, the majority of people speak SW mandarin, so qunǎr is more prevalent but with a totally different tone than the Northern counterparts. Qù nǎlǐ is more dominantly spoken in southeast provinces like Fujian, Zhejiang and Taiwan (province of ROC). Because Mandarin is becoming increasingly dominant, you will hear more and more qunǎr in Southern China

It’s been like this since the pandemic started as people from the north US are flooding into Florida, Texas, and Georgia. Our new home prices actually shot up like 15% in the last few months. Heck houses are selling like hot cakes. We literally put one on the market and bam eighteen bidders in seconds one moves in quickly within a week. New business are popping up now too just a little slower as licensing Places are trying to get caught up as they are quite swamped. It’s actually kinda nice to get an influx of new businesses and people as Orlando needs it seriously.

North East China, where winter can last up to 6 month of the year. Another issue is related to economy. North East China used to be the absolute most important industrial base in China back in the 50s 60s, even more important than Shanghai. The Heavy industries started to be out competed by foreign companies in the 1990s, there are still some very important heavy industry in the North East, but that's concentrated in the southernmost province of the North East, Liaoning . Even those are facing stiff competition from abroad in things like machine tool manufacturing. As China develops and the high end heavy industry would flourish again.

I would've thought with china's ambitious economic plans (made in china 2025 and belt & road) that the northern industries would be needed just as much. I'm also curious what countries are competing against china in these industries. India?

@obsidianstatue 3 жыл бұрын
@@maxschaeffner9005 Of course, North East China is still a really important industrial center for China that produces Machine Tools aircraft and Jet engines, it's just that other parts of China have grow so much that relatively speaking, North East is now a lot less important. China is competing with Germany, US and Japan in the Machine Tools industry.

Considering how logistics play an even greater part in international trade nowadays + how the Northeast population is aging faster than the South, I don't see Jilin & Heilongjiang become great industrial bases again. @@wompwomp9904 Some are fly over states but not all. The reason these states are called Rust Belt because heavy industries such as steel, coal, and industrial manufacturing has waned over the decades especially from cheap overseas competitors of raw materials. The slide started in late 1960s and ramped up through the 1970s oil crisis and a recession. States included are Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and some parts of New York, Illinois and Wisconsin. Theres only less than a handful of cities today that were able to diversify and reverse it's fortunes. Pittsburgh is one of them. The population in these states continues to decline as they move to the South, Southwest, and West for better jobs and warmer weather.

The North-South confrontation in China is very serious. Unlike the United States, each state has great autonomy. The economic decision of the central government can determine the development level of a region. In the decade from 2010 to 2020, the economy of Northeast China has almost stagnated. At the same time, many southern provinces that originally lagged behind the Northeast have more than 10% of the economy. In some areas, the fixed asset investment of a provincial capital city exceeds that of the three northeastern provinces. At the same time, the central government gives a large number of tax cuts to the western provinces and the strategic policy of western development. There are also a large number of trade tax rebates for export trade in the southeast coastal areas. At the same time, there is nothing benefit in the northeast. In addition, there are historical and cultural opposites. China has always been divided Han inherent territory and Frontier land. In addition, the economic development of Russia's Far East and North Korea has stagnated, As a result, there is no strong trading partner in Northeast China. This is the key to the problem. Deng Xiaoping said, let some people get rich first, and then the people who get rich first will lead the people who get rich later to achieve common prosperity. This sentence came out at the beginning of reform and opening up. It is to give an account to areas without economic development policies. So as to facilitate the continuous production of products in these areas and the reform of product supply. This is the logic of China, It's totally different from the West.

Because it’s easier to move compared to the past. I think the most important point for moving in many countries is cheaper house, cheaper life, and more job. Many people have been moving from the north usa to Texas or Florida too. Or people in north Vietnam moved to the south because it’s rich and open business more. No one really moves out because of the weather, people move because of job, money and freedom mind.

1.6 million moving south is somehow an issue? And how many moved north in the same time period? tell me when at least 100 million have moved. 1.6 million seems like a normal yearly trend when you have a population of 1.5 billion. @@jasonqian you know nothing of this area, northeast province has coal, petrol, its average salary is largely higher than average in China before 2010s. @@jasonqian there may be historical reasons too. During the Chinese Civil War, the north generally supported the CCP, while the south supported KMT. @andro7862

@@jasonqian While Shanghai was indeed milked dry, the Northeast was not a failed enterprise. From the 1920s to the 1960s it was the prime industrial and agricultural region of Asia. Around a million Japanese people emigrated there and many more Chinese. Also the industrialization of Dongbei has nothing to do with Stalin rather mostly with Japan.

Most people outside China do not know about the hukou system in China. How are these Northeasterners able to move their Hukou to Xishuangbanna? It's not as easy as it seems. You can't own property in a city if your Hukou is not registered there.
@weixiangwu5262

Basically you just know there is a thing called hukou but apparently don’t know how it works when buying properties. It depends on which city do you want to settle and in most case as long as you live and work in there for above two to three years and pay your tax and insurance on time, you can buy a property. Of course you gotta have enough money and proper credit to do so especially if you are borrowing.
