If you don't do good with the job that you currently have, nobody will trust you when other opportunities open up in the organization. Ask questions, take notes, learn the organization's business and politics, focus study around mastering the job you have in cyber, complete assigned projects and duties, ask more questions and let someone know when you are stuck, show up consistently on time, don't lie, admit when you make a mistake, be precise with your use of language, proofread and grammar check your work, volunteer for tasks, help others, and generally be dependable. That will put you ahead of 90% of people, including those already in cyber.

To start off, thank you UnixGuy for this type of content, informative and transparent; i can hear the years of experience in what you say, and will work hard to one day also be as wise in the ways of tech. And @Matt R. thanks for adding this bit; it makes me reposition myself as I think I've been so obsessed with working on things to develop into a different role that I'm not taking the present for what it is. To elaborate, Over the last 6mo as a helpdesk analyst ive kind of downplayed my role thinking about all of the great and exciting things in cloud im working towards in the future that i lost the fire i once had at the beginning. I got to a point in which i didn't have to worry about desk sheets and reviewing them before logging into ServiceNow, pulling up AD and PowerShell for the day. Up until recently i started to feel the distance with my fellow colleagues and team lead. It bothered me since those are the ppl I trained with spent countless hours working together to reach a common goal. I decided to consult with my uncle & mentor(who happens to be a heavy-hitter in C.S.) and to summarize: there's nothing wrong with having a passion for tech, but just like @Matt R. mentioned, calculate your words well, cause to you it could be a serious question but to others who probably don't have the same resources or knowledge, it could seem like you're trying to show off. Soft skills are super important! Not that i was trying to show off but i was so excited everyday about tech that i had forgotten to listen more and speak less. I started to make changes right away and things are back on track. I know all too well from podcasts, videos, and books that you do not ever want to be the guy in the office that thinks they're God's gift to I.T., cause the more you try to fill those shoes, the more everyone starts to see you like an idiot. Be a team player, If a colleague mentions a certain app function or work flow; ask them if they can tell you more about that. They'll be more willing to listen to you on anything you want to help with.

As a cyber security consultant I can see that there are many paths into cyber security. I got there via a help desk where I wrote reports, did problem management, risk management, change management and incident management. I took the exams alongside work. My degree area is not computing, it is economics but with all degrees it had statistics, some chain theory and links to corporate management and business strategy. I taught the subjects years ago as well and realised that the degree will not get people the job

That was a great video. I made the same mistakes when one of my previous employers asked me to volunteer for a certification with a partner (AWS). This took 3 months and involved review panels from both my company and AWS with practical hands-on exercises, culminating into a demo prototype. You can imagine how much effort this takes. In the meantime, I could not focus on my real duties. and my performance suffered. I recovered after that, but other architects who "volunteered" NOT to do the certification reaped all the financial rewards for their results and the followup promotions.

100% correct, some transparency, my current job, I was hired on to perform ADAS calibrations on vehicles and at the same time I started school. I told them what I was going to go to school for and they hired me along with my background in the mechanic field and having a machinist degree. After about a year, I asked for more responsibilities and I did and got paid more and still performing better and my supervisor also happens to be a CIO, lets me gain the IT experience as much as he can and going back to one of your older videos, pertaining to you looking at servers and whatnot, I am doing some help desk stuff along with what I was originally hired to do. Not so much cyber sec but it is still great stuff to learn and grasp stuff that will help me and my company down the road and even my CIO throws ideas out for me that he wants to implement for the company and I happen to have a bunch of PC's in my home network and I can create labs on the spot or spin up VMs to test and perform the ideas he requested. I really love it and I seen the growth in this company so I'm staying. Another great video UnixGuy!

However, I think social skills and networking can get you even further. Are you functional or hands on technical at your big 4 job? I have many years of big 4 experience in exception management, IT Audit, building Power Points and reporting. I am so sick of the functional work. That is what I do. I have found it very difficult to migrate from functional to technical. Recently got laid off and was not even sad about it (although the $ was nice). I found it practically impossible to migrate from functional to hands on technical work in big 4. My advise, for people who are thinking about going to big 4, don't join if they ware offering you a functional position but want to do hands on technical work. That line they sell you that you can transfer to any other team/function in big 4 is a complete lie. Unless you have deep management connections, political capital, and/or are a hot chick they just expect you to sit and rot in your current position. Whatever you do don't do IT Audit. That shit is the worse!

Hi Unixguy . I’ve just stumbled across your videos and have consumed everything I can find. Thank you for efforts. I’m almost 20 years into law enforcement, but I have a passion for tech , digital forensics and cybersecurity security. I’m currently considering a career move but, seems I’ll take a pay drop to get my foot in the door. I suppose that’s fair as 20 years, lots of experience and a supervisor position can’t be expected on day one . I think I can make it work and my partner is on board but the “grass isn’t always greener “ adage is giving me pause for thought. A digital forensics company has offered me a job , acquiring and analysing data from mobile devices with a view to move on to computers and communication cell site analysis. I plan on taking the Google cybersecurity certification, Blue team 1 , certification and some of the others you recommended. Hope is not my idea of a strategy but I believe I can work hard and success is possible . Your videos have helped me set a path for myself .

This is a great video and topic. People like security certifications an the increase of money rather than what a information services help desk role makes in salary )many out there skip CompTIA A+ for this reason)... But the reality is that people truly miss out on basic core troubleshooting. It's great if you have a a job in cyber security... but if you do not have any basic troubleshooting or even basic understanding of computers, networks, operating systems, cloud platforms, operating systems and mobile devices it's going be difficult to protect those assets. I've worked in information services for 40+ years, and I've seen this issue time and time again.

True thing is "it depends". I am too a person who tend to study a lot during my job and, yes, it's a pity cause I get I'm not 100% focused. My range is more like 50-95%, with spikes when I'm required to work on urgent stuff. I'm seen as a person who "is there" when needed but I cannot be the one who, when there's some free time, stick there not doing anything or just re-check anything in the company...my minds fly and I want to study. Analyzing myself in total transparency, though, I can tell that this is due to the fact that I don't like that much what I do and I'd love to have a switch....The issue being is that I'm not ready to switch and I would hardly gain the same amount of money. I'm a non-tech business analyst and my struggle is due to the fact that I wanna learn tech stuff (and I do) but then I hardly find opportunities to use them, ending with sensation that I cannot do anything practical. What I do could be done by a 16 yearold teen if he applies himself...I just have to use my mind, study the platform and getting to understand what can, what cannot do, how there may be some blank spots, having to do with customer and custom-projects....something which is thought as more valuable but less satisfying overall

Its mostly non existent, some companies will pay some 5 days courses, others will pay for your exam fees if you pass the exam It depends on the company, you might work with someone more senior. Either way, if you want a career in cyber or cloud you will need to embrace self-study and self-learning, this way you take ownership of your progress and career trajectory

@@UnixGuy I feel like I just got punched in the stomach. So you’re saying, get whatever cert you want, do whatever training you want and then hope for the best?? How can that be expected coming in to a new job? So for instance, if you did aws courses, you’d be expected to hit the ground running at your new cloud position? There’s no training on what you’re specifically required to do? Seems a little harsh :(
@UnixGuy
@UnixGuy Жыл бұрын
@@Mita7401 Hey Damita, I didn’t mean for it to come across like that at all! The reality of jobs is that no two jobs are the same, so there are a lot of variables! Things are more flexible and really depends on the team! I meant to say is that you are the master of your own destiny. Think of it like a quest for mastery. For example, imagine you’re learning the violin, but your school only gives u one hour of violin practice per day, what you would is go home and practice for another hour if you want to get good faster. If you want to become a world class violinst however, you will practice maybe 5 more hours and seek private tutoring, the choice is yours in this instance! Having options is good, lets say you studied for AWS but your job has both AWS and Azure, thats great because you’ll get to learn both and be more well rounded and trust me after two years of work you will realise they’re both very similar. Don’t be afraid Damita, just make a start and trust that you are smart enough to adapt and figure things out as you go - we all do. And don’t forget to enjoy the ride :)
@Mita7401
@Mita7401 Жыл бұрын
@@UnixGuy Wait lol. I wasn’t offended at all btw. Maybe I didn’t explain that right. Ok let’s say I did Sec+ and some AWS courses. Then I apply for jobs. Let’s say someone hires me at XYZ Cloud company. Is there a training that happens at that company to get me familiar with the job they want me to do? So for instance - McDonald’s and Wendy’s both make burgers. But if I get hired at Wendy’s, they’re are gonna show me how to perform making a burger. There’s a training period where they get me up to speed on their expectations for me performing the job. Do tech companies train you in the job they hire you to do I guess is my question. No offense taken UG :)

@@Mita7401 No worries at all. Like said, it depends on the company, and because this is a knowledge based field, there is no ‘set process’ or ‘step by step’ guides, there might be for some things, but there will be a lot of Googling and learning until things get easier/ So short answer: every company is different, some have training some don’t, either way it wont change things for u as a candidate you’ll still need to learn :)

I interviewed for an entry-level networking job, and they overemphasized certifications, but I think that they were just trying to eliminate me. I told them upfront that I was not certified in the first interview and they said it was fine because they would train me, and pushed me through to the next round. When I got to the second interview, all of a sudden, my lack of certifications became a problem, and that was the end of that.

When I asked for a raise, the answer I got was "there's no ladder to climb". When I finished my cyber degree and got a few certs under my belt, the IT director asked my boss if I could intern for IT and it was denied. So am I too good at my job that my boss can't let me go but not good enough to deserve a raise? I eventually scaled back and just stuck to my work scope.

I don’t dispute what you say, but that means that people working in IT are a completely different species than people I’ve worked with for 30 years in another field where being more competent and pro-active was the surest way to make yourself profoundly disliked and shunned. My impression is that someone who is perhaps less qualified/good at their job but naturally inclined to mingle like a Pringle (so delicately reframed as ‘networking’) might be favoured for a promotion. The biggest mistake, is working in cybersecurity in the first place. The black hats are ALWAYS one step ahead of the white hats. Management never seems to realize this inescapable fact of Life. All it takes is one incident for a cybersecurity professional to be terminated. Too many corporations view adequate cybersecurity funding as an unnecessary luxury. Then when an incident occurs, they can’t throw enough money fast enough at the problem. A lot of cybersecurity issues occur because of humans being too lazy to make the extra effort to do the right thing. “Sure, I could examine the details of this email before opening it, but it looks ok.”, “Sure I could disable unnecessary services on the server, but that takes time.” “We could lock down ports on the firewall, but it’s easier to allow all traffic through.” “Yes, we could use FTP servers that require logging in, but anonymous FTP servers with full access, are much easier for our end users.” “Yes, we could use VLAN’s to improve security on our private networks, but that would make switch management more complicated.” “Yes, we could create a unique VPN for each user, but having everyone use the same VPN and key, is so much easier.”
